I've been watching for signs of excessive pressure both summer and winter with zero signs. While I'd prefer a reduced charge my .308s seem to shoot best with that load for some reason. You can bet I'll be miking the base of the case after shooting this summer.

Well I finally got to pick up my bulldozer today about 60 miles north of my house. I had several hydraulic cylinders rebuilt and all the hoses and fittings replaced to prevent it from catching on fire due to a blown hose when it's been working hard. So it has taken a month to get this all done but there is a very nice gun shop in Elk City and I picked up a couple of boxes of 168 gr 308 A-Max bullets and a box of 100 CCI 22 LR rounds. Then as I was leaving Elk City and about 8 miles south I hear a pretty good size boom and see tire pieces flying all over the place. I pulled over and discover in the month that the dozer has been setting on the tandem axle gooseneck trailer the spare while still having plenty of pressure split it's tread and was worthless to replace the blown tire. I did something I've never done before and called a road service tire truck at 6 pm for help. Heaven knows how much this is going to cost me. AARRGG! I didn't need this after spending $974 on the dozer repair. I even checked the tire pressure on the trailer before I left. 80 PSI in every tire but I figure it must have taken a nail upon leaving so it lost enough pressure to get hot and blow. Sure sucks even when you try to do everything right.

I think if I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any luck. My brand new Hornady Electronic auto powder measure is dead from the start. Return to Hornady is about a 3 week turn around. I guess I try the folks I purchased it from. -
When working up a load for my first AR-10T a 1998 Armalite with a Springfield Gen.III scope on it with the .308 rectical. I worked up a load with 168 Gr. Hornady A-Max with 44 Grains of Varget that gave me .31” at 100 yards, .643” at 100 with Nosler brass and 1.23” at 200 yards which worked out to .61 MOA with Winchester brass. Out of all the different brass I’ve used I found that Federal is the most consistent for me. Last week I got very lucky and was able to purchase 1000 once fired Federal .308 brass cases for $115. That brought my price per round down to .56 cents a round for the first loading and .47 cents for every load after that. By the way I believe that 44 grains of Varget can be pretty hot in other rifles however it has no signs of too much pressure in my AR-10T or my Windham .308 AR Hunter. As always don’t take my loads as a starting point and drop 10% and work up from there. When I’m reloading I always trim my brass to size so I don’t have any problems with too much crimp pressure. image ru upload pics image post I'll cling to my God and my guns, and you can keep the "Change".

My first two years in the Air Force I was in "intelligence" as a Morse Code Operator. Other wise known as a ditty bop. 4 swings, 4 mids, 4 days and 3 days off. I was stationed at RAF Chicksands in England. It was the longest two years of my life. After that I was able to cross train into Civil Engineering into the Entomology shop. It's where I was meant to be I guess because for the most part I loved it until I made MSgt and the politics got old. Being a gun person I always ended up being the guy in charge of checking the rifles back in after an exercise. Since we used blanks there was a lot of carbon to clean out. When I was stationed at Pope AFB in 1981 1/2 the rifles had performance problems when issued for field training. Just a problem with lack of maintenance. The guys at the SAMTO (Small arms training) gave me a sack of M-16 parts to fix anything. After making sure all the guns were cleaned properly and bad parts were replaced the next field training exercise we had 100% working rifles. From then on our commanders cut me a lot of slack when it came to getting training with explosives and other weapons. I was in hog heaven. The only other people that I knew of that were able to get that training were Forward Air Controllers. Man I sure feel sorry for our modern military. Morale has to be at an all time low.
-
This is exactly why when we would go out for field training I would take my agressors out to a range on Ft Bragg and give them a chance to shoot their M-16s full auto. Most of the time it was the only time they got the chance to. The ammo I used was given to me by Army units I had befriended and they found out it was easier to give it to me than to turn it back in. When we did it however to prevent mistakes I would only take 1, magazine and 1 rifle with us to the range so we could make sure that live ammo never got mixed in with the blanks that we used to play war with. It wasn't much but it was more than the typical Air Force guy. Working at Cumberland Knife and Gun gave me a bunch of connections and made my time at Pope AFB great. In the 3 years I worked there I never made a penny. I spent it all on Guns, ammo and knives.

Last night I was working on loading that 1000 rounds of 308 brass and for some reason my 4 or 5 year ole Lyman 1200 electronic powder measure started going hinky on me. I have sent back once for repair but this time I decided to purchase a new powder measure. I ordered the Hornady electronic powder measure. Should get here by Thursday. Hope it works at least as long as the Lyman worked for me.

I've been reloading for 41 years now. All you have to do is purchase a Lyman, RCBS, Hornady etc starter kit and a reloading book. Start slow and pay attention to the warnings in the book. I've got 100 .308 Federal primed cases on my bench ready to put Varget powder and 168 gr AMax bullets in today.

Just finished the DVD. Good movie, great man that saved a lot of lives. I hope the general population that get ahold of the ass that murdered him do a Jeffery Dohmler on him.

I just received 1000 Federal once fired brass from a guy on Gunbroker.com for $115 and 1000 168 gr bullets from Midway USA. The brass looks like it is fresh out of a stainless pin tumbler and if it didn't have a dented primer in it I'd think it was brand new. I'm tickled pink with it. For the price of $115 that makes each round cost .56 cents for the first load. Then it brings my cost per round down to .47 cents. -
I had it in my possession in 3 days and it works perfectly. I thought the extended charging handle that I first put on it was pretty good but http://mechdefense.c...-group-buy-sale has it beat hands down. Right or left handed it works easier than any brand charging handle I've ever used. I must say great company with better customer service from the original order where he called me to make sure he sent the exact charging handle that would work best in my rifle.

I've never understood why some people have to make sorry comments to piss on anothers parade. Some folks just cannot allow another to take pride or joy in their new weapon. There is something about what Windham has done and those old guys are really putting a lot of quality and pride into their work. I really enjoy shooting my AR-10T but it's not the carry gun that the Windham Hunter is.

My friend it's no hijack that time shooting the 106 while setting on that tripod leg was an amazing experience. Especially for an Air Force TSgt at the time. That gun impressed the heck out of me BUT one thing I thought about after shooting it. While it was a very deadly piece of equipment the signature if setting in one place would probably draw fire quite quickly. I was glad I was not using it in time of war. Of all the weapons I fired in those two days the 106 was to me the most impressive. My hat too is off to those young men that crewed the ONTOS and those M40s on top. I bet they had to keep moving to make sure a RPG didn't poke a hole in them. I can't imagine being inside one when that stream of plasma would come through the wall. As I remember the ONTOS was not very heavily armored. Definitely not a M1 Abrams.

Since it was raining today I had some time to take a couple of pictures of the Windham Hunter. I am posting them because of the guys at ar15.com and the pissing contest griping about the way I mounted my scope. The bottom picture is taken with my camera where I can best estimate where my eye is and it is the sight picture I see as soon as I toss it up to my shoulder. By the way it's raining so the bottom picture is aimed at our TV. Just so ya'll know I was not aiming at a feller with a beard. upload image online adult image sharing

I'm impressed with the owner of mecdefense.com He called me first thing this morning to talk to me about what type of AR .308 I had to make sure what I was ordering would work properly. Good customer service. This is why I ordered it so I can more easily handle the charging handle from either side. upload image online

Even though the first thing I did when I purchased my new Windham Hunter .308 AR was to change out the charging handle lever for an extended one. I noticed the Group-Buy Sale through here for the TacOps-Sniper extended charging handle for AR10 from <a data-ipb="nomediaparse" data-cke-saved-href="http://mechdefense.com/products/308ar-com-group-buy-sale%20%C2%A0For%20$49%20rather%20than%20the%20normal%20price%20of%20$68.%20%C2%A0This%20one%20has%20not%20only%20the%20extended%20lever%20on%20the%20left%20but%20it%20has%20a%20thumb%20engagement%20portion%20of%20the%20lever%20and%20extended%20handle%20on%20the%20right%20side%20to%20make%20using%20it%20much%20easier%20with%20a%20scope.%20%C2%A0Since%20I" href="http://mechdefense.com/products/308ar-com-group-buy-sale%20%C2%A0For%20$49%20rather%20than%20the%20normal%20price%20of%20$68.%20%C2%A0This%20one%20has%20not%20only%20the%20extended%20lever%20on%20the%20left%20but%20it%20has%20a%20thumb%20engagement%20portion%20of%20the%20lever%20and%20extended%20handle%20on%20the%20right%20side%20to%20make%20using%20it%20much%20easier%20with%20a%20scope.%20%C2%A0Since%20I" m%20running%20a%20burris%20xtr3-12x50%20scope%20that%20is%20fairly%20close%20to%20the%20rear%20of%20the%20stock%20this%20should%20be%20handy.%c2%a0"="">http://mechdefense.com/products/308ar-com-group-buy-sale For $49 rather than the normal price of $68. This one has not only the extended lever on the left but it had a thumb engagement portion of the lever and extended handle on the right side to make using it much easier with a scope. Since I'm running a Burris XTR3012X50 Scope that is fairly close to the rear of the stock this should be handy.

Oh the memories. That time when I got to shoot the 106 at Ft. Bragg I well remember pulling the center of the barrel adjustment wheel and yelling spotter when I fired the 50 BMG spotter round. When it hit the deuce and a half on the range at 1500 meters I yelled main gun and punched the center of the wheel and I was in the middle of the biggest boom I ever felt. I thought it was going to tear my britches off. It is an amazing piece of work. At that range I hit the engine block and really tore up the front end of that vehicle. I had seen the rounds before but didn't understand what they really were. Looking like a giant 30:06 round with holes in the case. The way it shattered the ground behind it and in front of it was nothing short of amazing. mrmackc your picture of the ONTOS is only the second time that I think I've seen one. When we were at Hurlburt Field next to Eglin AFB in FL. for Rapid Runway Repair training the cadre had one minus all the guns and the Chief invited me and a couple others for a ride. If it is the same vehicle I was amazed at how fast it went. I believe the one the cadre had was destined to be a range target but it was quite fast. It however had some water that had leaked inside it. That Chief took us flying down the runway and headed off into the smaller trees as fast as it would go. I thought he was going to get us killed as I saw trees flying over the hatch as the ONTOS struck them. Man that was back in the mid 1980s but still quite a memory.

When I picked up my new Windham Hunter .308 AR I was looking for some more information on it and found here. I've owned a real AR-10T for several years and don't know how I ever missed this place. When I posted a couple of pictures of my my new rifle here I was welcomed with open arms and I appreciate that. I fired it some more this weekend with my son in law and son along with my wife, daughter and grandson I was very surprised at the 300 yard accuracy. My son in law has a 24" Browning .308 built with a Winchester action and a Hoag overmolded stock. The Windham out shot it and grouped at what looked like about a 2" group. I didn't have the Rhino as we were all in the son in laws truck. However I'm as pleased as I can be. I was not even shooting from a bench but shooting out of a deer hunting hut window. Even my 13 year old son put three bullets touching at the 300 yard gong then a couple of flyers opened up the group but he called them. He however is not getting my Windham for a long time. While I really like my Armalite AR-10 the guys a Windham are putting some real quality into their rifles. When I posted some pictures of it on ar15.com I ended up getting a bunch of crap by "experts" about how my scope is mounted all wrong. When I throw it up to my shoulder it is dead on and the eye relief is perfect. Heck it's not like I'm a newbie I've built a bunch of AR-15s and owned my AR-10T for many years and it's a 1/2 MOA rifle. Anyway thank you all for your support and friendship. I don't understand the mentality of people that have to make a point in finding fault with others stuff. If you don't like something that someone is proud of keep it to yourself unless your dealing with a problem that might be a danger to the owner.

For the most part I enjoyed my service. Especially during the Reagan years when we had enough money to shoot lots of ammo and enjoyed a lot of field training. I retired during the Clinton years when I just couldn't serve a president that wanted to take all our guns away. I feel so badly for our current troops and what they have to go through. Then have cut the military so far that our service members cannot hardly keep a marriage going. Way to many deployments for the modern soldier and not enough support from the "Commander in Chief". In the 1980’s I was stationed at Pope AFB and got to know the commander of 7th Group Special Forces Unit. He invited me to spend 2 days on the range shooting everything they had in their inventory from suppressed .22 LR handguns up to 106 Recoilless rifle. I mean EVERYTHING in between. At the time I had my Air Force Aggressor camo outfit on with the rip away rank patch on my left chest. I was shooting an M1 Garand at 800 yards at the man size electronic fall down targets and the gun was good. After knocking a few down a couple of the PFCs quietly asked me what I did in the Air Force. I told them the truth that I was an Exterminator. Their eyes got big and they acted like I had just let them in on a big secret. When they went back to the other group of Grunts they all stood there looking at me like I was some kind of hit man. I never did tell them that all I killed was critters. Those 2 days I probably burned up $40,000 worth of ammo. It was during the Regan years when the military had plenty of money. I was in hog heaven shooting the M2 50 BMG, M203, Law Rockets and of course the M40 106 recoilless Rifle. The amount of power was amazing. It was the kind of stuff that Air Force guys just never got to do, so I really considered myself very lucky.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjyoB2ZpAphD6WjcItJc-Og This is the Utube channel that my late friend Randy Pinkham posted many of our times shooting our 50 BMG, ARs, several machine guns and his suppressors on. Randy passed away February 2nd 2014 and boy do -
That is a good reason for keeping an AR in your pickup with some extra magazines. I always carry two extra magazines with my 10mm Delta Elite that I never leave the house without. It belonged to my best friend and shooting buddy to sadly passed away a year ago on February 2nd. He was a 1911 nut and an FFL dealer and I've been helping his wife sell the guns she decided not to keep. When he died he had 120 handguns and rifles. Now one week after he died his last acquisition arrived because the paperwork finally went through. It would have been the perfect defensive long gun for the "he shot cousin Bobby" situation. It's an American 180 .22 LR machine gun with a 277 round magazine and it shoots 1600 rounds a minute. It is amazing the fire power that machine gun puts out. It looks like a cross between a Thompson Submachine gun and a Vickers machinegun. www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvJaUnzXcXA He acquired it from a mutual friend so at least he was able to enjoy it before he died. These videos from from my front yard were we did most of our shooting. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-az74w14wtk

By the way I lost a cousin in Viet Nam (Robert Durall 1970) and when they shipped his body home it was lost for several days. When he was found there was evidence that someone had smuggled heroin on the inside of his body. It left my uncle Ben as a terribly bitter man toward the government for the rest of his life.
