  1. 308AR is a big boy rifle - I like the idea of making them run - and turning cover into concealment. I had to look at some of the more pricey options, knowing that I'm a lot more likely to get something for < $100. It does make sense to get equipment better than my eyes and my skills - but I don't have to go far to get there... I've given myself two rounds of obsession over this already. Burris Signature rings would give me some amusing trig problems to work on, but I really want to shoot better consistently so it would be a diversion (I don't think I need to add or subtract 40+ MOA in the mount to make my shots work). In the next round, I had to know about LaRue, ADM and Bobro and I eventually found some test results on RTZ - all of those and a couple of others performed well on the test. I've seen a bunch of yt vids on mounting and LR shooting. I just ordered and Aero Precision ultralight mount for the Burris scope. I expect it won't be the last. I was pretty close to pulling the trigger on a LaRue, then I noticed I'm not the only one here who wants things. So I think there is one of those in the future for me. Also a barrel upgrade, when I can shoot a little better than my 16" DPMS. Thanks a=for all the ideas and facts. I admit I was completely scared off of the PEPR. If it ever gets warm enough - I'll go out and shoot .
  2. and aero precision... (for some reason, I have a bias toward them, probably from watching a lot of youtube videos - a questionable application of technology) T
  3. my list grew - not a bad ting - I can think about a few things while I play around with this idea: Burris XTR rings Warne QD rings ADM Leapers POI rings RRA one piece Nikon M series Vortex (how'd they get in there again?) More to learn. I'll thank you alll again and will post some range result. I'm still just getting used to the Larue trigger and that so far has been a good experience, which is what brought me back to the vision part of this. Liberty or Death Rich
  4. thanks for telling me about the PEPR issues, I will avoid that. I guess there are a few rings to look at.
  5. I'm going to look at all those rings and a couple of others that were identified here. Thanks. I'm not happy if I don't have a problem (the nature of an engineer I guess), so I am happy to have a few things to examine and think about...
  6. I am starting to improve my DPMS Oracle for mostly target shooting. I plan to shoot 300 yards in the spring but whatever shooting I do between now and then will be mostly imited to 100 - 200 yards. I have a good trigger now and with a little more than 100 rounds with that, I amd about to improve my sighhting with a Burris 3-9x Fullfield E1. (ballistic plex reticle). Thinkingand reading here about mounts and rings, I think it comes down to three choices: - Burris PEPR mount - Aero Precsion SPR mount - Burrs XTR rings I have an set of Hawke rings right now (which are a little high) and I will set the the scope up with those to get some practice and first impressions. I've been reading here to see what you guys have been using and talking about. The mounts I'm looking at are all within my budget, saving some for a nice barrel project later this winter, or possibly reloading. Anybody have an opinion about these mounts for my rifle/situation? Thanks, Rich Liberty or Death
  7. thanks, I was beginning to wonder about that, or had I wandered into a group recently 'educated'. I feel better now :).
  8. The way this works is: 1) poop show - massive MSM media campaign against evils guns 2) between independent investigators publicizing what they learn and nut jobs posting insane and unrealistic theories, coreqatnfusion and lack of clarity creates a soupy mix - throiugh which nobody can discern the truth 3) people forget as the president or some hollywood big grabs a girl's ass and teh news ceaselessly bombards us with teh horror of grab-ass. 4) we move on to new tragedies with more senseless and stupefying laws on the books. 5) more nonsense and social justice inanity 6) Rich learns to reload his own...
  9. Playing guitar - mostly old jazz standards. Fishing as much as I can, in teh small ponds around here and to the west and as oftens as possinl;e, in RI at Block Island for striped bass, tuna bonito, sharks - any willing predators.) With winter, almost nothing but playing guitar.
  10. Why would you suppose that such a search is constitutional?
  11. Spinelessness is fashionable in merry old England. I don't think they ever fully recovered from the beatings they took over here.
  12. Now that I have it, I can (even comparing it in the test block to the GI trigger) appreciate the difference in pull and amount of travel. It's also a good introduction to working on these rifles (other than changing furnitue) - yeah I will find a way to get out with it before turkey day... even if it's cold.
  13. LaRued at last. Won't be able to shoot until after t-day - Rats!
  14. whoa - I don't know how I missed that, probably just got tired of seeing the same price everywhere I looked for a day or two. Still looking forward to the LaRue. I didn't see much at all today at the gun show, more collectibles I think than shooters stuff, although there were some. I found one FCG kit other than OEM replacement parts - not much to miss there. practicing imaginary trigger pulls...
  15. "Timken is a bearing company, Timney is the trigger company " Yeah, I don't know where that came from. I have Timney bookmarked.\I bought a LaRue trigger because everything I read about them is positive and it's a little less (about 115) less than the Geissele - which seems like a unanymous recommendation in this thread. After talking with a few shooters at the club, I'm really leaning toward reloading as teh next step and then in getting used to the trigger when it starts to warm up again. It's already a little cold for me. Thanks for the ideas.
  16. I have been looking at triggers - Geissele, Timken, Armalite precision 2-stage, Velocity, Rock River, LaRue and others. As for tight groups - that's how I'll measure success - even though 300 is about the maximum I can shoot here. Although, ther is a 600 yard range nearby, I just don't visit that club but could go there to some of their matches. I'm really not ready for that. $300 might make me hurt too much. I'm going to try to find something for less than $200. Anyway, I had thought about working on the GI trigger. Maybe I can get comfortable with the idea after I get another trigger, in case I break it - either functional;y or safety-wise. On the other hand, I don't expect that I'll be able to match a $200 trigger with an improved (polished?) GI trigger but it could be fun trying to get there. Thanks, so far I think I am on the right track - trigger and barre lare the top priorities. What triggers - up to $200 do you recommend? Rich
  17. I saw them there when I was running around in the canyons. It is a beautiful place. This was in 77/78. We got there (wife and I) and unexpectedly ran into one of her high school friends whose husband was stationed there. Great place to spend teh winter, much warmer than NH.
  18. I may be jumping the gun a bit as I'm just getting my shooting in order, but I unexpectedly have really started to like theAR platform. I have a DPMS Oracle just like it came out of the box except for the furniture. I think the next thing I'd like to do is improve the trigger. After reading a few posts here and having the opportunity to talk to a precision shooter at my club the other day, tht seems like the best change I could make to improve my accuracy. So, for the long term, I expect I will eventually want to upgrade the barrel or complete upper - not really interested in taking the DPMS apart, I would build another upper or buy one with the barrel I'd like to have for shooting to 300 yards but more frequently 100 and 200 yards. In fact, I think I will shoot 100 more than 200 as it's much easier at my club/range. But the club puts on 300 yard matches and I'd shoot in as many of those as I could. So that's the application. I don't hunt.I will shoot commies or other rats if I see them coming. So, I think that my DPMS lower, with a trigger upgrade, should be good for my future precision upper, but I wonder if there's (I know I'm asking for it here...) a reasonable chance for making a better one with my current skills (was a mechanic for a short time before I turned myself into a software engineer) or even if I need better skills to do it. It might make a nice project for the winter - or I could learn reloading after my trigger job and I knoiw that is going to be necessary sooner or later to become any kind of precision shooter. I'm only thinking about this because it's getting cold already here and I don't know how much shooting I'll do froom the range hut while burning wood... (NH winters and old guys likek me - not optimal). Thanks for your opinions and advice. Rich
  19. I was there for about 6 months as a contractor to army comm testing center. That was quite a while ago. (before the famous shootout in Miracle Valley).
  20. Everbee to Sierra Vista?
  21. I can't argue with speculation - then again - maybe he planned every detail and executed his plan perfectly... But thinking about what you said about firing 200 rounds through the door, I wondered what it would be like to do tht ina small space like a hotel room and I don't thinkI would be breathing well after- because of the gas and smoke, probably couldn't see or hear well either. I would say that it woudl draw the attention of securityand law enforcement as well. No, I don't think much of what we have been told is anywhere near accurate or true and I don't believe that it would take 72 minutes in Las Vegas to get the cops into the crime scene with the capability and intention of stopping a shooter. Not for a minute... Liberty or death
  22. here here! So there are only 175000 people with full second amendment rights. It's just a faux pas...
  23. I doubt it. Whatever happened, this is useful fo several interested parties. I'd say if you are in the business of selling security scanners (back scatter x-ray machines and the ike - already installed a day after this event in some Vegas attraction I can't remember which), or if you are a politician of either party seeking favor from the anti-gun dickheads, or any of a few other interested groups - there is nothing better for promoting your cause than an incident like this. I'm not claiming to know anything about the guy, or the event. I'm just saying that what we will see on teh news will be sanitized beyond recognition (you NEVER seeAmerican men killed and injured in wars on teh news anymore - just one example). We are likely to hear and read a lot of airhead analysis of scant facts but not much truth, Just my opinion of course, no offense intended. Rich
