I'm curious what others are using. I want something to protect and transport my rifle to and from the range, that also acts as a decent shooting mat? 2-fold, 3-fold, maybe with a couple internal pockets. Something effective. Not something buy once - cry once. I may buy more than one for the right style. I appreciate any suggestions

Somewhat. The Quantum having the top rail machined off, is in comparison to peeling an apple. It surprises that no one has changed the style ergonomically. The area at the barrel nut and fastening method are pretty much a given depending on the "lock" to it. Forward of that leaves a lot of room for better ergos on the sides and bottom. At least to behind the gas block, where the circumferences can get back closer to the clamping/barrel nut end. Even if the hand guard top rail is full length, all mentioned in my previous sentence, is malleable. Yet no one to my knowledge has went in that direction. No one has touched more (narrower on the sides) oval either, in that regard. I'm surprised.

By the way, what's the deal with not having the ability to edit my above? In three minutes I get locked out? WTF over!!!

@Bootscraper. I don't see anything in your post but white. Either my eyes got full of cataracts, or you replied with white fonts? LOL. Thanks fellas. My build was a long term thought process regarding components, after receiving the M5E1 Builders Kit over a year ago. As I played the process of elimination, knowing what I wanted, I built a 2nd "list to buy" and built from there. Visually as well. So my build I assembled virtually from the components in the top image above, before the key components, barrel, bcg, adj gas block, (which I don't really need for this build, but have future plans for and will swap it out on my next build) and buttstock. Once I decided on the final components, my (virtual) AR308 was built and on my screen in 2D perspective. With two different optics. Once I was happy, let the dough flow. The build all said and done, as seen, without optic/mount, 10Lbs/4oz. Adding the LT204 and the SWFA 5-20x50HD with Vortex caps, that added 2Lbs/8oz. The glass and clarity is outstanding. Total weight as seen in the bottom image, 13Lbs/9oz (less ammo). Definitely not something I planned to be carrying much beyond truck to bench or similar use. I suspect a kick like a pony, once I get it dialed in. When I want to put it on a diet, my AP CompM4 has reserved parking.

I almost omitted the optic and mount. I should have. I'm not meaning to advertise, except the HG really. I really like what AP has done regarding handguards for the M4/M4E1. They (AP) may already have something along the lines of my visual concept in mind. I would love to see it become fruition. I decided posting a visual, may be a good thing. User input is always a plus.

The Armalite RL gas tube arrived today, and in it's rightful place. As you said, Z, it's GTG. Here's a visual comparison.

The 5rnd ASC mags arrived. On testing, they didn't seem to latch very well at all. In fact, with a little wiggle they fell out. Then I tried adjusting the mag catch spring and button. Didn't help. So I grabbed the needle nose and stuffed them up, towards the top in the mag-catch hole towards the feed lips. Gave them a little manipulative persuasion. That did the trick. The mags now lock in solid, and release perfectly.

I get what you're saying. The price of the Time-Sert kit, then add in the single slot rail, that's +$100 just to be able to mount the Mono-pod. Screw that. Magpul, YOU SUCK BALLZ. You should have continued on and incorporated the benefit of the Gen1 into the Gen2. Instead you omit it and add a fastening point where it could have went? Squeeze bags are cheap. And right now, so am I!!

That was one method I thought of after seeing the short rail offered by Atlas. A couple 10-32 Helicoils, yep. Lock them in with Rockset. I have everything else. I just need a couple inserts.

Gen1. That's where my brain has been heading. Atlas apparently, and the bottom of the stock is straight plane, which makes mounting a bit easier. Gen2, not so much I haven't taken the stock apart yet to see what's there in the bottom, but being a 2-piece split, rigidity in mounting comes to mind. In short, WTF?

The mono-pod itself is a no brainer, it's how to go about mounting it? Best I can come up with is to (maybe) mount a short rail under the rear bottom. That looks like a chore.

It seems my measly $20 order through Armalite for a rifle gas tube puts me at the bottom of the, this needs to be shipped list. On the same note, they had no problem taking my money!! I called to ask, why the still "processing" status. Was led to believe my order would be expedited. No notification of shipment since calling, so I expect it to appear. Foliage Green is out there, but I'm not paying a premium ($250 +/-) for it. I decided to go OD Green. I can Rit Dye the black areas. Perfect timing. Primary Arms has the UBR G2 on BF sale, $155.72/shipped. I appreciate you guys stepping in here, with the solutions. I guess I axed that plan. LOL

If SHTF color don't mean jack. It's the black abyss in the safe, and strong sense of going color blind, that I'm trying to liven up. Black wears the same color inside. There's cliche in that comment. LOL. In all honesty, aside of that, I don't GAF what color it is.

That's a thought. I've never painted a stock, or polymer for that matter. Have you? What paint would adhere, without wiping it down with a de-glosser?
