Murch7 Posted April 30, 2016 Report Posted April 30, 2016 Hey everybody, I'm getting ready to put an order in for my barrel. Right now I'm pretty set on going with a 20" HBAR barrel from Anderson for $112 before tax I believe. Does anybody have any other good options out there? What are your reason for 16-18-20" barrels and heavy barrels vs a standard weight barrel?
EngrBob Posted April 30, 2016 Report Posted April 30, 2016 What is the purpose of the build? 20" and heavy barrels are not particularly good for hunting, OK for a range queen. I have no experience with Anderson's barrels although I have a 5.56 build using their receivers and they are fine. My barrels are all Faxon.

This particular build will be mild hunting, long(er) distance shooting for me, and simply to add a .30 cal rifle to my slowly growing collection. I've been on fence about 18 vs20"
EngrBob Posted April 30, 2016 Report Posted April 30, 2016 I hunt with a Faxon 18" on a Spikes .308 receiver set (3 white tails in the freezer). This will hit steel at 500+ yards easily and the Faxon barrel is very light so the overall weight is not bad. Most folks here will tell you that 16" is good enough for hunting most anything that is within a humane hunting range and the 16" Faxon pencil barrel on one of my 5.56 builds is a tack driver well beyond 300 yards so they are right. If you get an Anderson barrel let me know how you like it. Their prices are outstanding.
shepp Posted April 30, 2016 Report Posted April 30, 2016 These rifles are heavy any hunting I'd stay 18" or below, I've shot 4 deer with mine all DOA with my 18"
