New Armalite AR-10 owner.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone I am new to the AR-10.  So new I haven't even fired mine yet and due to lack of sights won't likely be able to until next weekend.  However I have already been thinking of future plans for this rifle.  I was wondering what issues I might run into if I were to purchase a different upper to swap out with the current lower.  Basically to have the option of a target rifle upper and a carbine (current) on the same lower.

As long as I stick with Armalite parts will that result in any issues?

I know the .243 is basically a necked down .308 so I was also wondering if it's possible to run a .243 upper on the .308 lower?

yep you can run a .243 upper. Stick with Armalite and your good to go. Uncle Armalite often posts sales and such.

Good to hear.  It will be a bit before I can begin such a project.  I did order a cheap red dot for it so I could shoot it soon since I spent most of my funds on the rifle itself.  I suspect that cheap red dot won't last long under the 308's recoil so I am already planning for something a bit more resilient.  However good optics aren't cheap.  Once that is done and maybe I change the front handguard then I will begin the target rifle project.

Welcome to the AR10 gang!  I love mine.  The recoil you're talking about isn't quite what you might think. You can also change things to adjust the level of felt recoil.  A Heavy Buffer is one part.  And it's pretty much just a change out on the kitchen table.  Changing to a muzzle brake is also an option.  I run an Advanced Armament Corps. Blackout.  A heavier stock will also reduce felt recoil, but make your rifle heavier.  I run a Magpul UBR.  It does add weight to the back end of the rifle, but the fact that the cheek weld area doesn't move when you adjust the length of pull is WAY comfortable (as opposed to the metal buffer tube with the standard carbine stock).  There are several choices from other companies that have a similar feature, and some of the other guys on here that have used them can recommend what they like and the brand.  I can only speak for Magpul.

As for optics, I have an Trijicon ACOG TA01-B.  It's meant for 7.62NATO rifles, will auto range (via the reticle) to known ranges (and military ammo) and will stand whatever recoil you can throw at it.  They can be expensive ($1200 MSRP).  But I got mine NEW on ebay from Ghost Firearms for $600.  And it wasn't a shelf sitter for years, it's only 4 months old.  If you look at a used ACOG for the 7.62 rifles, be sure to ask the seller for the serial number before purchase or bidding, and then call Trijicon and ask them when it was made.  They are very friendly, and will tell you with no fee.

For iron sights (or BUIS as they're called) I run Dueck Defense RTS sights.  Many others are available, and everyone on here has a favorite.  And all the reasons they will give you for their choice are usually good ones.  Check out many, ask lots of questions, and then buy the Dueck Defense RTS units.  <thumbsup>

Thanks for the input!  Here in NY it had a muzzle break on it from the factory.  Also collapsible stocks are a no-no here as well.  I think the Magpul PRS is OK in NY though.  I am not worried about the recoil personally.  I've shot larger calibers in bolt guns.  My comment there was just that the red dot I bought for the mean time wasn't a particularly expensive one so I don't expect it to hold up too well.  Who knows I may be surprised.  I run a TA11H on my AR-15 and I would LOVE another one on the AR-10.  I like the TA11's increased eye relief and I like the H reticle.  They do make that in a .308 version too but right now I think if I spend another chunk like that after just buying the rifle I will need to find a place to live with it because the wife will be unhappy LOL.  I cannot say enough good things about the ACOGs though!

I was thinking what about an AR-10T upper on the std lower, I would expect the lowers to be pretty much the same.  Am I right?
