draco41
what do you mean by lapping?Bench rest and Precision shooters lap their scope rings after mounting them to the receiver to ensure a precise fit and to minimize the stress put on the scope from misaligned rings. PantherPlayer
Ahhh so it's just to ensure that the rings aren't tweaking the scope a little and therefore tweaking your aim through the scope. How did you make yours Drew?
imschur
Its more then that. You want full surface contact from the ring bearing surfaces. The first time you do it youll most likely see you are only gripping your scope at the corners of the rings.Even properly aligned rings need lapped or your scope can move under recoilIll dig up a link where I wrote about it. I actually thought I finished that page..doh
bandit10-4
I also made mine, many years ago, very simple, and I just use valve lapping compound from the auto parts store. I don't see a need to buy the expensive stuff... As for one piece mounts, in theory, you shouldnt have to lap them but I have found that the do sometimes have sharp, or uneven edges. I don't think it absoultely neccesary on the one piece ones, but it only takes a minute so why not...
