s2k1 Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 I'm about to order my .308 barrel from Fulton Armory. It's 18.5", but rifle length gas. I was considering mid-length gas with an adjustable gas block so that I would have plenty of "gas" to play with. Is the .308 platform generally overgassed? Will I still have enough gas to tune? Thanks!
Robocop1051 Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 Adjusting gas should only be required if you're running a suppressor. The 18.5" with rifle gas is absolutely fine. FA used to make a 16" rifle length. My 17" has a rifle length. As long as the gas hole is wide enough, it'll cycle. I guess the short answer you were looking for is "yes, it is over gassed" <lmao>

Thanks!Hi S2 me...im partial to middy length gas systems...never needed an adj gas block....thing is i dont like my gas blocks exposed...just my own deal. with my middy system my choices for the handguard seems a lot better....every one ive built is pretty much a clone of the first one...the middy has never let me down...yep the brass flys, but never a ftf or fte.....when I wanna tune a lil for recoil...I go for the other end....buffer/buffer spring <thumbsup> Wash
s2k1 Posted July 17, 2012 Author Report Posted July 17, 2012 Agreed on not exposing the gas block. I'm using a 13.8" Troy TRX-308, which should just cover the gas block. At least that's what my research tells me. Rifle length gas tube is approx 13". Standard Rifle lenght handguard is 12". My TRX-308 is 13.8". That should cover my gas block, right?
98Z5V Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 I'm about to order my .308 barrel from Fulton Armory. It's 18.5", but rifle length gas. Runs great - I have that barrel. Don't do midlength gas on an 18.5" .308 AR.Troy MRF-308, 13.8" rail.
s2k1 Posted July 17, 2012 Author Report Posted July 17, 2012 Nice! How accurate is the barrel, and do you use an adjustable gas block?
98Z5V Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 Using a PRI .936 lo-profile gas block. Non-adjustable. It's a damn great barrel. I'll try to find some pics of targets (they're all posted here, at any rate, somewhere).EDIT - Details, and initial target results, are in this thread:http://308ar.com/forum/dpms-lr-308-general-technical-discussion/lr308-self-build/msg616/#msg616
