Even so, aluminum is known for being pretty soft, too. This makes me wonder if the aluminum gun parts out there aren't actually alloys.

 

They ARE alloys.  Did you think they were raw aluminum?

That's what all the numbers you see are. 7075, 6061, 6063, etc. All that represents the specific alloy type/grade.

 

Very cool, thanks! I've wondered about that for a long time. Is this the sort of thing people are talking about when they say "aircraft" aluminum? As 98Z5V was kind enough to point out, it will be awhile before I know everything.
