Interesting options. I completely agree with you on being able to use handgun ammo as an option is a big plus. I'll do a little research on the 9mm. Did you build it yourself? I would go all in for a 45 ACP but I have a secret obsession with buying an HK USC and building a 45 AR would put that on the back burner. I have heard some good things about the Hi Point rifle in 45 ACP and its cheap. However, I've always found that you get what you pay for. My goal is two more AR builds before I branch out and invest in other rifles. I have to fill this nice new big safe I bought last year after all. Jay

I just wanted to get opinions on what other people have purchased or experienced with various calibers for ARs other than 5.56 and our wonderful .308. I would love to have certain ones, such as 6.8 and a .458 but the benefit doesn't offset the cost (IMO). The 300 AAC blackout is gaining more and more fans but I've never fired it. I have a few coworkers that have made the move to it and like it. It also seems to be cheaper than many options, especially when it comes to loading your own. I'm just gathering opinions because I plan on a SBR down the road next year or the following year and I don't want it in 5.56.

I was just about to open up with a topic about the .458 SOCOM when I found this. The more I read and look at pics of this monster, the more I fall in love with it. The problem is that the only thing the round is going to kill for me is my bank account. The uppers are cheap enough but $2.50+ per round is too much I think. However, I can still stand back from afar and admire (drooling).

Great quote! What a classic movie.

PM me with the results of that stock if you don't post it. I'm very interested in getting it down the road.

Reservoir Dogs, right? Warden Samuel Norton: I believe in two things: discipline and the Bible. Here you'll receive both. Put your trust in the Lord; your ass belongs to me. Welcome to Shawshank.

I'll be holding onto it for another week or so. Just PM me for anyone interested and we'll talk about the particulars. I usually check this forum regularly...few times a week at minimum.

I carry my Benchmade Griptilian almost ever day. It's a well made little pocket knife. It's a bit pricey. I try to avoid buying too many knives because it's hard to judge the value and prices are all over the map.

What made you decide to move to the 308 AR/AR-10 Platform?
jrtMA replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
I wanted to start building a few ARs and liked the 7.62/.308 round over the 5.56/.223 because of the stopping power. I knew a bigger round would come with a higher price tag and I wasn't crazy about the availability of the 6.5, .458, and other similar rounds. Even with the demand for the .308 round, I still see it here and there. The fact that the 7.62 is also a NATO round helps too. -
http://www.fulton-armory.com/headspacegaugesetfchambergonogoandfield3083-piece.aspx I just received mine from Fulton Armory. The price sucks at about $80 but it comes with three...go/no go/field. Some I've seen just have the two. Up to you but obviously $80 doesn't fall into the cheap category.

It is my understanding that the bolt is DPMS compatible. I am building a cut-and-dry high end AR-308 on a Mega MATEN group. I didn't want to mess with any adjustable system so that's why I just purchased the bolt. The 308 BCG in nickel boron coating that I was unexpectedly able to get changed my component ideas. Still waiting on my Magpul PRS stock and Troy sights...whenever they materialize my build will be done.

I am by no means an expert in the area of low mass carriers but I purchased this bolt assembly because of its high quality and ability to not have to use it with a JP carrier. I have talked to a few that have paired it up with a Young Manufacturing carrier w/their key and love the quality. I have never had hands on exp. w/ this but that was my goal. I only changed my mind because the wait time on this carrier is crazy. Also, you don't have to buy that high end carrier with this.

I originally purchased a JP Enterprises .308 Enhanced Bolt Assembly Completion Group w/i the last few weeks and wanted to offer it to anyone on this forum prior to trying to return it or selling it by other means. People have been great on here so that's my reasoning. This product is brand new never been fired. I am only selling it because the carrier that I wanted is not expected in anytime soon (actually no time soon) and I recently came across a complete BCG. I am not going to price gouge on this but be aware that it is a very expensive item and I'm only trying to get my invested money back. I paid a total of $251.45 (which included $11.50 S&H). Please don't even make an offer below the $239.95 the group is priced at. Afterall, I could get the full price by other means. Again, this doesn't include a bolt carrier.

Well it looks like certain sites are starting to get some smaller components in (ie...Fulton Armory and DSG Arms). I was finally able to piece together the elusive bolt catch assembly. 98Z5V, you did warn me but I must concede that most of it is my fault for wanting a higher quality selection of parts. Damn that Geiselle Trigger, among just a few. Although, the Fulton Armory barrel saved me a lot and I feel that it will be a good fit for what I actually need. The BCG is still a bit of a question mark. I am not too excited about the potential of having to get a JP BCG. It just seems overpriced to me. Still looking for alternatives that will still be quality products.

I hadn't seen the Raptor or those levers before...very nice. My son (only 5) is a lefty. This build with the Maten Mega is not their stock ambi design so I'm out on any ambi stuff. Any future AR builds will all be ambi for my son down the road. I plan on building 1 or 2 AR-15's. 1 is never enough afterall.
-
I appreciate the offer but waiting another day or two for the mega is not a big deal. I'd be able to get the Troy anyways because of it being a MA company and having connections if a worst case sold out situation happens. There are definately better looking charging handles than the stock one but that's another 80+ dollars that could be spent buying a necessary component. Next question...where can I get a good BCG or be on a short wait. Now that I've moved away from the JP lomass stuff, I shouldn't have to spend as much. i still want quality though
-
Ok now you're feeding the addiction. Money is starting to go quickly now. Holding off on the Troy TRX because apparently they have two DPMS versions. I will have to measure my upper when it gets here to avoid a return.
-
so sorry brother... Already did it prior to your post. The S&H on small parts is a pain. Just did it last week for a 3 dollar trigger pin on a Mossberg 500a. Dumb move by disassembling it and leaving it on a table for months...the pin fairy took it. I think the Mega Maten set thats in route has the handle and cover included....hopefully it does when it arrives. I really don't want to have to buy those.

I'm sold. The opening I believe is bigger which shouldn't matter. The threading matches up so that should be GTG, right? The Titan still rocks but it is a bit long in appearance. I like the FSC30 because of the recoil reduction reviews and the "mean" look, perfect.
-
That FSC30 is nice...same price as my choice so now I'm rethinking it Where do I buy the gas tube and what am I looking for? I think the barrel says rifle length for it.
-
I have to say that the help on this forum continues to be great...all of you have helped me save at least $500.00 by pointing me in the direction of quality parts that are just as good as what I would have originally bought. This might actually get me to finish this before the end of the year, which I didn't think I could afford. Opinions on the SJC Titan brake....pic below Supposed to really help with recoil which is what I want. I'm not to worried about the flash hider thing...paper isn't going to see the flash anyways. On a side note, why is that advertisement on the right for that Armalite AR-30 keep calling my name... :love4:
-
What type of gas block do I buy with that barrel. Does it even matter really?
-
thanks for the pic... That brake is sick...love it. You're right the SS does look nice too.
-
Ok...it's a done deal than. I know there were options but wasn't sure if the barrel requires a more expensive treatment. You'd think that if it was offered in SS and gray, it would be in black too...enough of being a chick. I'll shutup now. <thumbsup>

I took a photo below of the Fulton barrel that I plan on buying tomorrow... 18.5", .308 AR, Medium Weight, 1x10, Stainless, Match Quality, FA by Criterion. It's a good barrel at a good price. The only problem is that it comes in a gray and stainless steel finish, no black finish. They offer a light weight in black finish and that's it. The light weight kills it for me. I really don't want the gray or ss. Is it easy and cheap to just buy it and have it refinished in black? Should I just keep looking because of this small issue? Other black barrels I looked at are not much better and twice as much money. Oh ya, and a long wait for the expensive barrels too. The mega maten set has been sent and will be arriving to my FFL in two days. I will definately be buying the Troy TRX 13.5 TRX BattleRail tomorrow. I'll be going with Troy iron sight in tritium or KAC offsets but that will not be soon.
