I needed something to keep my mind occupied while I wait the next 8 months to get my Griffin 30SD out of jail. So I went on the hunt for an accurate .22 WMR. Now, I know the words "accurate" and ".22 WMR" aren't typically anywhere near one another, but I've always had a soft spot for .22 WMR (and .410s), as my first long guns were chambered in each of those. At the suggestion of 98Z5V, I checked out the Savage 93 FV SR. Nice little rifle, but I hate the stock on it. Simple enough to swap to a Boyd's Pro Varmint, but that's another $150ish I'd have tied up in the rifle before I'd even like it. Long story short, I settled on the Ruger American Rimfire Target. While I'm not in love with the style of the OEM stock, it's at least laminated and attractive to look at. And, at $400(ish), not a bad bargain, either. As soon as my gun pusher notified me the rifle was in his hands, I ordered up a DIP 0 MOA scope base, some Warne 30mm Low rings, and some mags (a 9 rounder and 2 15 rounders). Then I robbed my BSA 4-14x44 FFP Mil/Mil scope off one of my 10/22s (it always looked strange on that rifle, anyhow) and mounted it up. Now to boresight it and get 'er to the range! I suspect this rifle may be my "gateway" into PRS/LRP. I'm going to do my best to avoid that. Or, at least, that's what I'll be telling SWMBO.

@98Z5V, I think I've decided on the RART in .22 WMR. I like the Savage, but I'd be immediately ditching that factory stock. At least with the Ruger, I can live with the stock (even though I may swap it for one of those Boyd's "TactiCool/Pro Varmint/whatever they're calling it now" stocks at some point in the future. But I am a sucker for black laminate... Now if my gun pusher will just come back from his July 4 lake trip, I can get one ordered...

I don't suspect the firing pin here, but, in the interest of being thorough, I'll post that up this weekend. I just realized that I forgot to mention... With a live round chambered (with or without dropping the hammer on it...), the BCG sits just far enough back that the upper cannot be hinged open from the lower. Hence the mortaring. I'm going to re-check the headspace this weekend also, and I'll attempt to drop a live round into the chamber. My main suspect right now is a burr in the chamber (coming from a decade of Mini-14 troubleshooting experience). Surely a Criterion chamber wouldn't be that tight, right? Also mulling over the thought of of a slightly-too-long gas tube. It's an SLR AR-15 rifle length tube, and Criterion's .308 barrels (excepting those made specifically for Fulton Armory) have AR-15 gas port locations, so the chances of this being an issue are slim, IMO. I have no issues cycling the action by hand without live rounds present. No catching, no stiffness, nothing that would suggest a problem. So this has to be bolt face or chamber-related. Right?

Alright, gents. Yesterday was finally this old girl's first day out. It was a resounding failure. Loaded one (1) round of Winchester XM80C into a PMAG to test whether or not we had enough gas to lock the bolt back. Insert mag, pull back charging handle, and let the BCG fly home. Pull the trigger, and just a click. Drop mag, attempt to clear round -- we're locked up. Had to mortar the rifle to eject the live round, which did have a light primer strike. Remove BCG and check her out. She's bone dry -- dammit. Lubed liberally with Mobil 1 15W-50, wiped off bolt face, and tried again. Same result. Had to mortar it out. Tried some Fiocchi FMJs, same story. Tried some FGMM, same story. Tried some foreign crap my buddy had on hand -- same story. I took a look inside, and, with a round chambered, it doesn't appear the bolt is fully locking into battery. I'm a bit stumped, as Next Level test-fired this BCG before sending it back to me. I'm running a Criterion barrel, and (as far as I can remember...it's been several months...), she passed Go/NoGo for headspace. Anybody have any other ideas?

I know a couple of folks who've bought a SCCY pistol. All seem to be pleased with them, though I've never fired one myself. Personally, there are a dozen other pistols I'd rather buy, but for someone who's budget-conscious, they may be a decent nightstand gun.

Not sure if I’m doing all that now. Though I have the Armaspec parts on hand, I stumbled upon this today... https://borebuddy.com/product/22lr-plug/ Install/remove without even touching the buffer retainer. Slide it in, push it past the retainer, and turn 90 degrees. Removal is the reverse.

I started looking at DIP’s website. They’re selling a package with the Boyd’s stock (I’m partial to OD Green...) and bottom metal. Also checked into a Rifle Basix trigger. I haven’t asked, but I think my friend/pusher can get me into a 93 FV-SR for $300-350. Then glass. Then a 25 MOA base. Then that DIP stock/hardware package. Then some Savage 10 rounders. Then... Damn. Damn, damn, DAMN. Also... check out the 93R17 FV-SR. If you’re into teeny-eensy bullets, that is.

I've got to give a shout out to Right To Bear, Armaspec, and Joe Bob Outfitters. I ordered that whole batch of parts on Friday, and the BCGs (Right To Bear), buffer spacers (Armaspec), and magazines (Joe Bob) arrived today. Since Taccom3G (it was Taccom, wasn't it?) stopped making their "tension device," or whatever they called it -- the part that rests between the buffer and the back of the rimfire BCG to apply additional tension to keep everything in place -- I figured the Armaspec "A2 to M4" spacer would be a perfect substitute. Just place a notch in the front face to allow it to be held in place by buffer retainer and protrude enough to make contact with the back of the BCG, and it should be golden. Hell at almost 2" long, it'll apply more pressure than the 1" long spacer Taccom used to offer.

@98Z5V I got to checking out Savage's bolt-action rimfires over the weekend. Seems to me the 93FV SR is pert-near identical to your Mark II-FV SR... https://www.savagearms.com/content?p=firearms&a=product_summary&s=93207

Like I say, I sold my bike. Just had to wait for a couple of retailers to blast out their 4th of July sales.

King Enabler! Thanks for all the info — I read that to say I’ve got pretty good taste in rifles. 😂 And your lack of comment re: Charter Arms was conspicuous. 🤣 Re: That trigger group, it was reworked by Brimstone several years ago. I suspect I’ve got some FOD in the return spring hole and/or a touch of grease is needed there. I just haven’t taken an opportunity to strip it down and check it out. This group is in the SS/laminate rifle Truth is, my 10/22s got shelved when my LR308 followed me home. They were my babies until I contracted BRD.

...aaaand barrels are ordered. Clint sounds like a great guy, to boot.

I'm currently shopping for something to help me pass the time (in addition to rifles for my kids...). Thinking about a Ruger American Rimfire Target in .22WMR. Or maybe a Mossberg MVP Predator in .308. Or should I go .223? Or, what about a Rem 700 SPS Tac AAC-SD? And, weirdly, that Charter Arms Pitbull in .45 ACP looks interesting, for a $450 revolver... Maybe I'll just piddle with my 10/22s. I need to figure out why one trigger won't reset, and I need to change out the front sight on the other one -- I thought a globe front sight would be super cool, but it wasn't. At all. Oh, and I can mount up my El Cheapo Weaver 3-12x50 on that second rifle and shoot some groups. Maybe even send the barrel off to have the chamber set back, and get the bolt blueprinted. And bed it. Dammit. I don't have to buy guns to spend money on guns...

I stumbled upon this article a couple of months ago (can't remember how or why...). It's long and, admittedly, not from a necessarily "neutral" source, but nonetheless, I found it an interesting read. https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/secrecy-self-dealing-and-greed-at-the-nra

I'm probably fixin' to (that's Okie for 'about to') get a "fraud watch" phone call from my bank. Because, in the last 30 minutes, I've spent about $1,000 online, snatching up the rest of the parts for these matched rifles. All I lack now are the barrels, which require a phone call to Clint Beyer out in Washington...

I've got to be honest, I don't know where I come down on all the recent "issues" the NRA has. I've read articles on both sides of it, and I still can't wrap my head around the situation...

I’ve been checking NFA Tracker for several months now. Strangely, F4 Trust shows ~9 months, if I’m reading that correctly. I wonder if ATF checks NFA Tracker... Lol!

USPS shows my Forms arrived in Oregon on 06/09/19. ATF NFA Desk says they were received 06/11/19. Bank says cashier's check was cashed on 06/12/19. NFA Desk says average processing time is ~9 months. She seemed annoyed that I asked, so I didn't press her on whether that was for individuals or trusts. Either way, it'll get done when it gets done...

Transitional Bushmaster .308 group trouble
COBrien replied to Mark Hartig's topic in Accurizing the .308AR
I've got a DPMS LR308-T (basically, your rifle, but with a fixed buttstock and railed gas block), and it was a beast when it came to recoil. Carbine-length gas systems on .308s with light buffers are a b!tch. I swapped in a heavy buffer and ArmaLite spring from Slash, and added a good muzzle brake, and it tamed her right on down. I've since added an SLR adjustable gas block, but haven't had an opportunity to get out to the range and adjust it. I suspect I'll be going back to the OEM buffer and spring once I've adjusted the block -- the heavier buffer system slowed the rifle's cycling speed noticeably and, for some reason, that bothers me. If you're still interested in an adjustable gas block, JP does make an adjustable FSB. https://jprifles.com/buy.php?item=JPGS-2FS -
Oh, I like the look of that... Asking my Cerakote guy about E-Series now. That's all good to know. Thanks, brother!

My bad, I had a brief case of cranio-rectalasia... What I meant was Graphite Black, but looking some more, I might be into Armor Black. Super flat, like chalkboard flat...

Good lookin' build, DNP! Also, I sold my Sportster last night. So I now have the funds to finish up my parts shopping... Barrel & thread protector, handguard, BCG, MBT, mag adapter, mags, and sights coming up soon. Now to figure out what to do with these raw lowers. On the one hand, my uppers and handguards are (will be...) anodized black. I could blast the lowers (once machined) and have them anodized, as well. Or I could have my buddy Cerakote all of the "major parts" in Carbon Black. I'm just not convinced Cerakote is going to wear as well as honest-to-God milspec anodizing. What do y'all think? Shite, also... Beyer barrels are Cerakoted/Gunkoted/whatever the coating is. I'm torn between matte black and "stainless steel" for the coating. I love the aesthetic my CSASS has, with the NiB BCG and bead-blasted SS barrel...

Well, got everything sent off today via USPS Priority. Should be there Monday. I didn't realize, until after I'd already gotten everything together (but just before I sealed up the envelope...) that the FD-258 fingerprint cards MUST HAVE ATF's correct ORI information. Since mine were done by the local PD (I know some folks there...), the cards had the PD's ORI. This, apparently, is a no-no. So I -- very carefully -- whited out the PD's ORI info and wrote in ATF's ORI info. My understanding is that ATF will place a pre-printed ORI sticker on them, but I wanted to be safe. Now we wait. I'll call my bank in a couple of weeks and see if the cashier's check has been deposited.

I'm definitely ordering up a pair of MBT-2Ss. For the kids' rifles...

Hmm... And all this time he’s claimed to be pro-2A. Methinks his desk might be the place a Hearing Protection Act would go to die.
