I will have to get some then. I just bought 500 Nosler 6.5Cal 140g RDF (Reduced drag Factor) for my 260 and creedmoor to try out. BC was .620 if I remember correctly. But going to buy the 178 ELD this week. Will post when I get them loaded and shot down range.

Has anyone tired out any of the Hornady 155, 168, 178 ELD Match match bullets. How did they shoot, mag length, loads? Just curious about them.

The moral and PTSD is an issue with drone pilots, my son is with the reaper in right now and I worry about it. I was with the predator drone maintenance for some 13 years and I knew of one pilot get up and walk out just after being cleared to fire a hellfire on two guys. He never flew again, we didn't like the guy as he wasn't very good pilot, over speed two aircraft and a hard landing on another one. I provided maintenance documents to the pilots review board. As the saying goes, "it's not if a predator is going to crash but when" ops tempo is none stop, it never ends, once being mission qualified, drone crews will fly everyday of the year if the AF could make that work. That's because there are drones everywhere, if weather is bad at one location you just fly extra sorties somewhere else. One could fly 4 hrs in Afghanistan, weather goes down and then brief for a sortie out of some other location for 4 more hrs. My son had probably helped kill some 30 guys so far between Syria and Afghanistan, he likes his job a lot.

One could just look down the bore at an object, than without moving the upper adj the sight/scope to the same point. Very simple to do, worked for me very well.

Yep, I have a 260 Rem, 26inch barrel, 1-8 twist, I use it in HP competitions from 200yds to 1000yds.

Get a 1-8 twist to shoot heavy bullets, 142MK etc.

Increase accuracy, eliminate the gas rings
HotRod308 replied to HotRod308's topic in Accurizing the .308AR
Maybe over thinking this but, the reason I did this was after shooting a match I could feel how much harder it was to pull the BCG rearward when it was dirty compared to when it was clean. After doing my 308 upper The rifle turned from so what gun that barely brake a 190 at 600yds to shooting a 200 for the first time and shot a 787 that day. Reguardless it seams there are some people just don't like new ideas or over think it so much it just can't be that easy. I have a 223 bolt I did, does one of the moderators like to try it out? -

If you don't like it that's fine. But .001 on one side and .001 on the other side equals .002 total of the clearance. But sometimes we talk before we think. -

I have a 223 bolt modified and cycles fine and 4 LR uppers 308, 260, Creedmoor and between all of the have some 3 to 4 thousand rounds fired without any problems. The machined area doesn't touch the wall of the carrier and I haven't notice any wear at all. I do use a thicker oil but cleaning it is no more dirty than with gas rings. I fired as much as 264 rounds and only cleaned the chamber and added some oil around 150 rounds. The rifle cycled just fine and accuracy was the same on day one of the nationals. I know it's an up hill battle to convince anyone of this idea is worth while. I have shot some very good scores with it. I did loan one BCG to a guy in Nebraska and first time out with it won the long range portion of the tactical match and placed second on the short range after loosing the shoot off. He was impressed with the accuracy it had during the match throughout the day. -

The bolt was welded by an ex certified aircraft welder and experienced machinist. He had no worries in doing this nor machine it back to a slip fit. The bolt has a fwd bearing and the rear bearing is the taper in which the firing pin is inserted into. The slip fit allows both bearing surfaces to work just as before with gas rings and also the lugs contact the lugs on the barrel extensions same way it would with gas rings. The increased accuracy comes from that when the gas pressure is passed into the chamber that the bolt carrier starts to move more constantly the same each time as there is zero drag from gas rings or from carbon build up upon them. I did a test were I fired 66 rounds and then chronograph two 10 shot strings with a bolt with gas rings and did the same test with a bolt without gas rings. The results were that difference between each showed that the ammo tested without gas rings was more consistent. The difference between the two highs/lows were closer and so forth. Old topic, but one can chew on this. Increase accuracy, eliminate the gas rings. Cycles just fine, weld up the slot and machine to .001 slip fit into the bolt carrier.

yep 30-30 rules, I got bored on the first page and skipped to the last page. Still keeps coming back.

I see that this subject made it back again and I believe the same article to boot. If you want a short barrel rifle, by all means go get one. If you want to brag about hitting the dinger at 700 yds with a short barrel, hey that's great. But what I really want to see, is a short barrel rifle win a rifle match. Not just a lucky shot at a dinger. There are NRA F-Class and regular HP matches all over the country. Bring the short barrel rifle with some accuracy and bring that article and that video clip along with you. You can tell all the other shooters there about your article and video clip as you sign up for the rifle match. Please tell them all that their 26 inch or 30 barrels suck real bad and your going kick their collective buts and win. Hey, there is a service rifle class, M-1 Garand, M1A/m-14, AR-15 (irons or 1-4x scope), M-110 (irons only). I believe, I put them in order from longer barrel to the SHORTER barrel. BUT I gotta ask this one question, would you be more embarrassed being beating by a junior with an AR -15 or by someone with a longer barrel? Cause it's going to be one or the other. Bring a lap top or I-pad for that video, one needs a bigger screen to watch it.

With a .089 drill in hand, I drilled the gas port bigger and installed the adj gas block. The rifle cycles fine and locks to the rear all the time regardless of the stiffer powder charge. Was able to adj the gas down to where it wouldn''t lock to the rear than open back up one click and it lock to the rear. Shot a respectable 3/4 and 1/2 inch group with a 142g MK, 41.5 of H4350 at mag length. Thanks for the help.

A perfect AR 10 comes with free ammo, barrel that increases in length automatically and shrinks to 16 inchs when inside a phone booth gun fight. Shoots .001 groups all the time and kicks like a mouse and cleans itself as well. Did I leave anything out, maybe puts up the targets as well and has a beer cup holder.

Been busy these past day or so, had to testify in court against a drunk driver yesterday. Anyway, thank you all for the help and info and all the tips. I due have a wooden dowel in place and still need to check a few stores on drill bit options. I have a 5/64 and I believe a 3/32 drill bit. The 3/32 is a .093 drill bit and a 5/64 is .078 . Going to look for a drill bit in between and stay with drill small and work my way up. I never tried any factory ammo in the rifle. But the loads that did lock the bolt back at the very low end of starting charge for H4350 and the bullet weights that fired through it. Based what I read and shooting the rifle its not getting enough gas fast enough before the bullet leaves the barrel. Hopefully I will have this done and try it at the range soon this weekend. Thanks again

excellent info, .096 port. Will post after I shot it on Sat

I wonder if other cycling problems people have with short 18 - 20 inch barrels have the same problem when shooting lighter weight bullets? Bullets leaving the barrel before the action has a chance to operate before the bullet has left the barrel. In one post the factory rep/tech told the owner to shoot 168g bullets or bigger to have the rifle to cycle. Just a thought.

Yes, I found that I have aprox a .069 gas port. I compared it to a 6mm wildcat barrel takeoff that I have and that gas port was aprox .079 in dia. The port was also 2 inches further down from a standard rifle length port location as the barrel was 26 inches long. Planning on drilling the hole bigger to .077 as it is the next size drill bit that I have. Any thoughts? I have an adj gas block in case it cycles to hard.

I have a friends DPMS 260 Rem hunter rifle that is not working right. 20 inch barrel and rifle length gas system. With a 120g bullet and 42.5 g of H4350 the bolt cycles and locks back just fine. With 44.5g H4350 and the 120g bullet it will cycle back far enough to pick up a round but not lock back. I'm thinking the higher charge of powder has increased velocity to the point that the bullet is gone before the received a full charge of gas pressure to cycle the bolt. With the slower bullet it has not left the barrel allowing the gas system to work correctly. Is my line of thinking off or not? Drill the gas port a little larger or put in a softer spring?

Being in Vegas there a lot of ranges to shoot at, the Boulder city range is one of the best. They have covered 1,000 firing point, firing lines at 200, 300, 600, 800, 900, 1000yds. Another range that has metal plates to shoot at out 900yds, 100yd 300yd sight in range with berms high enough to block the wind. Bunch of people who ar very nice. I miss shooting there. welcome to the world of the big AR

Mrmackc, NRA long range matches are all single loading, so having ammo loaded longer than mag length is no big deal. SOoooooo if you want your 308 to shoot high BC bullet like the new 175 TMK from the mag and have good accuracy at long range you need to make sure the gunsmith cuts the chamber with a short throat to get the bullet touching when its chambered. For 6.5 or even a 260 the higher BC 123g being .500 can be done the same way and still have room for powder. My short range load for my 6.5 Creedmoor is a 142g seated at mag length for 200 and 300 yds. But at 600 they will be at the lands. This because the 123g I would always seam to have a flyer or two out of the group at 300 yds as my DPMS barrel is a 1-8.5 twist and both sierra and hornady recommend an 8 twist barrel. The 142 is suppose to work only with a 8 twist but in my barrel it shoots just fine. I just used it at 1,000 yds and stayed with a 6.5x284 or pretty close to his score. Not bad considering a 24 inch barrel vs a 28 inch barrel and more powder and FPS over mine. The bottom line, either 6.5C or 260 or 308 if its mag length there are plenty of options and length of bullet jump.
