  1. Just read your intro post Thresher. If you plan on some long range hunting, I think 20 or 22 in would be good for you. I also saw you want accuracy, a lot of things depend on accuracy, but barrel rigidity helps with that. so I think 20-22 inches would be long enough to keep a decent velocity, yet maneuverable enough for hunting. and a semi bull or bull barrel, though it will make it a little heavier than a standard hunting rifle, will make it more accurate because it is more rigid and will be more consistent with multiple shots because there is more metal to have to warm up, less affect from cold barrel to warm barrel. As for brand, any of the two you mentioned would be great. heard only a few bad reviews about blackhole, but for their price, I would take the chance any day. As for Krieger, if you want the best of the best and aren't afraid to throw some money into it, that might be the barrel for you.
  2. what is your build and what are you planning on using it for?
  3. 45 raptor is to much gun for deer, hogs, and elk. I'm sure it would work for moose and grizzly, but is it even needed? and say you are walking around with the raptor upper on your rifle and come across the biggest white tail of your life. I myself wouldn't pull the trigger because I know that when I shoot, I would destroy to much meat. that's why I stopped hunting white tails with .30-06, so many people use it but in my experience it just destroys more than needed, so I definitely wouldn't hunt deer with anything bigger. When trying to go through pine nettles and other light brush, you need to look at something with penetration, that doesn't mean huge size necessarily. .30-30 doesn't have good penetration because of its low velocity and the bullet shape. but last deer season I was hunting white tails with .243 Win because I was in a motorcycle accident and hadn't fully recovered. A good sized doe stepped out into the field at about 120 yards and I dropped her with one shot. the branch just a few feet in front of me was shaking, I looked closer and the 1/4 inch branch had a nice moon shape of about 1/8 inch in it. Oops, didn't think I would of hit it or I would of cut it, but still it didn't affect the small 100 gr 6mm bullet that much. now at other times I am sure that it might make a difference but you throw a baseball or football and it hits a small branch it is going to change the trajectory some what, there are to many factors, it's just best to take good shots and pick rounds with penetration if you are going to shoot through light brush on the off chance. And the thing you have to think about these chanced shots that could end up poor, they don't just harm the ribs. there is an entry wound and an exit wound, and sometimes the round changes trajectory inside the animal. Poor shots could mean you ruin a good portion of one of the front quarters or some of the backstrap. basically it comes down to picking a gun based on what you are hunting, not 2 guns, not 1.5. If you are hunting deer, hunt deer; if you are hunting moose, hunt moose. as far as hunting goes, one round doesn't do it all at close ranges or long ranges. hate to say it, but what you want, seems to be unrealistic from a game harvesters point of view. .270 Win will take white tails through elk and black bear, as will .30-06. but the case size is larger than a .308 case so would lead to increased cost in an AR-10. honestly I think your best bet is .308 or 7mm-08 if you are looking for an AR-10 that will take the widest range of game.
  4. yup, because yours is chambered for 7.62 like you said. that has a lot of advantages. but I'm not sure if the looser tolerances in 7.62 affect accuracy at all or not. but yeah, definitely a bunch of script readers, like calling your internet company when your internet is down and you get someone in India telling you to unplug your router for 30 seconds and then plug it back in.
  5. .308 Win ammo should work in a rifle chambered for 7.62 because of 7.62's lower tolerances. 7.62 ammo does not work in a rifle chambered in .308 Win though. goes along the lines of .223 works in 5.56 but 5.56 doesn't work in .223. As for the one tech going off of what the lower says, he's a complete idiot. as long as the lower is able to function with the upper, it doesn't matter what ammo type it says. what is important is what the rifle is chambered for. where do they find these "techs". lol.
  6. COBrien is right, if simple things can't fix it, do what DPMS wants and then make them take care of it after it continues to fail under their directions. Messing with the gas system if that is the problem could lead to an oops. You have a warranty, use it and let them have the headache, and if they can't get it to function properly, they will probably replace it. Don't do anything to void the warranty. If they recommend a certain type of lube, use it. don't over lube it, it's not like a military machine gun, it shouldn't need to be bathed in lube and DPMS might blame it on that just to take the blame off them.
  7. Yeah, sadly we all can't afford mega (like this guy *points to self*), but Aero is a great buy for on the budget. Heard very few complaints, and those complaints I did hear about were easily fixed.
  8. black hole has some decent barrels for reasonable prices. plenty of options also.
  9. Thanks, haven't gone yet and hopefully I wont have to, but these are the type of things we get called to that nobody else handles usually. but heck, law enforcement has enough problems without all the crazy rioters. something interesting usually happens on 2nd shift. lol.
  10. DCI was investigating the shooting but called off the investigation because the rioters were destroying the scene and making it to dangers to turn their backs on them. The only reason they are rioting is because they want to start trouble and they look for the smallest reason to "justify" doing that. Last night I was wondering if I was gonna get called to Milwaukee to help with the situation, glad I didn't. I have to agree with shepp on letting them deal with the situation they create for themselves.
  11. I grew up in Clinton, lived in Janesville the past 2 years but just recently moved up to the Tomah area.
  12. I messaged him. nice that he isn't that far from home either so I could actually go in and see him.
  13. beautiful gun... so jealous. also jealous of the range, all I have is swamps over near me. lol.
  14. Thanks for the response guys. I wasn't sure if it was bs, but kinda sounded like it such as the flat bolt considering .260 rem is just .308 necked down for the 6.5mm bullet; or the part where it "stretches" the brass, technically all rounds fired expand. So will move on to another builder, any builders you guys could recommend would be great! I'm north of Madison about an hour, but family is south of Madison so I go through it frequently. Would appreciate getting in touch with someone that you recommend. And this is my first time actually posting in a forum, so the whole posting in the intro section went over my head. I'm technologically challenged, but put a firearm in my hand and it's as if it was an extension of my arms. :P
  15. I would like a precision match gun chambered in .260 remington with a collapsible stock, 15 in free floating for end, and a stainless steel bull barrel 16-20 inches in length depending on the weight of the rest of the firearm to try and create a good balancing point. I do not have the time to build my own rifle and below is what some of the local builders have told me. "The AR series in 260rem is problematic and takes a lot time to get working correctly. We can build and get it to work right but not without careful selecting the perfect parts. This makes the research and labor costs higher. 1. The bolt is a simple 308 bolt but the 260 has very different characteristics. A. It can puddle primers B. It stretches brass casings which makes it harder to extract. C. The bolt has to have a to have totally flat face with no recess as the shell may bounce when fired. 2. The barrel needs to be at least 20 inches or more long in order to make the gas system work right. A. this caliber was designed in a bolt action not a semi auto. B. The shorter the barrel, the sooner the gas gets out. This unaffected with a bolt gun C. The semi auto is gas operated and requires 20k+ psi. If the gas gets out too soon or too fast, it will have cycling issues. D. 22 inches would be a better start. 3. The barrel needs to be custom made with a matching pre head spaced bolt. 4. The buffer tube should be full length and not carbine to give it the maximum spring return. Therefore, no collapsible stock." Has anyone else experienced or heard of these problems with the .260 Remington cartridge in an AR?
