We have one up north of here we call the "Sultan Dump and Shoot" but gets pretty crowded with all the dumping and shooting and 2 or 3 trail heads in the same area.
-
I have to drive 2 hrs to get to a good pit, but we're the only ones there. We make a day of it, coolers, lawn chairs and folding tables. Range is 10 minutes from the house, 50 yard pistol and 200 yard rifle, but yea, rules...

gravel pits and ARs go together like peas and carrots!

Note: The Winchester Ranger off the Winchester Website shows 1210 FPS out of a 4" Barrel. Gained almost 300 FPS out of the 16" barrel. 10MM Mag velocities. Like to know what powder they use!

Another Range Report Rifle and trigger behaved, 10 oz buffer worked well, had some mag issues. The $12.00 cheapos work flawlessly, older stock glock mags were tempramental. It appears the followers in the cheapos are a faithful copy of the Glock #10, I have what appear to be "Old Style" in the rest of my mags. (Go figure, bought them all prior to Clinton's ban) Anyway, everything rocking so had a chance to get some chrono-radar data. IPSC loads, 180 RNFP that run just under 1000 fps in the limited gun My "Hot" 180 RNFP, all over the place. Maybe just pushing too hard, but my theory is the chamber has a little to much freebore for the slower powder. 10mm mag velocities. Law Dog 155 gr hollow points. Yowza!

"Pistol or rifle?" Carbine. Tromix 14.5 barrel with birdcage pinned and welded.

Took it apart, inspected, put it back in. Functions correctly. Think either there was a little piece of?? under it or maybe one leg of the spring was mis positioned. Good thing, I like the trigger really breaks clean for 50 bucks. Maybe get back to the range tomorrow

Range Report. Other then a couple minor issues shot well EXCEPT: Trigger didn't work properly. Need to engage and disengage safety after every shot. IF the BCG was operated with the charging handle, trigger worked. IF I held the trigger in fire, operated the charging handle, trigger would lock in the disconnector catch, wouldn't release to the sear catch. I think I'm explaining right. Took a while to figure this out. When shooting, the hammer would catch on the disconnector, when the trigger was released, the hammer didn't spring up to the sear. Had a radian talon ambi 45 deg, changed to 90 deg, changed out completely with a mil spec safety. When seperated from upper, hold trigger push down on the hammer it would lock on disconnector and not release. Anyway, trigger is the ALG Defense Quality Mil Spec Trigger - QMS from Primary arms. $50.00 Cheapo Anderson in the other one, Same Radian ambi safety, receivers identical sequential serial numbers. Guess I'll try another Anderson. I would have swapped out at the range but didn't want to mess with the anti-walk pins.

Really like the "No gas block" profile of the blowback carbine. Property taxes due EOM 😦 build fund taking a hit. After I recuperate from that hopefully on to the 458 build.

Evil Cousins Not going to say "Finished" up my AR-40 Carbine tonight, stock, handguard, birdcage and grip out of the spare parts bin, but it's ready to shoot tomorrow! Spikes upper and lower, KVP 16" Barrel, chucked a 308 birdcage in the lathe and opened it up to .413, KVP 10oz buffer, and Eotech 512. Always wanted to try an Eotech, one on sale the other day $389.00 no tax free shipping, had to grab it. Loaded up some full blow loads last night, 6.7 Vihtavuori 3N37 / 180 gr jacketed RNFP. Probably to add the Vortex 3X magnifier and some cosmetic upgrades to it if it turns out to be a shooter

10 yards at 4:00 seems to indicate a healthy bolt and recoil system, that's about where the spikes dedicated lower and the anderson with spacer blocks throws them also. Stern Defense BCG + 7.5oz 4-1/8" KVP buffer Just went in halves on the 5D Pro jig, first up friend wants to mill his own 40 lower for a pistol build. AND I have a Spikes upper and a Eotech 512 in the mail should just about complete my AR-40 carbine build. This $hit is just too much fun.

buffer weight? length? 7inch tube?

"Load in the morning and shoot all day!" --Mr Winchester? I must have gotten lucky with the AR40, 12 dollar 30 round mags flawless, a little tight but typical of Gen 1 drop free mags as well, a little filing to remove a square shoulder and all was good. What BCG are you running? Buffer?
-
And what mags?

Making confetti! what ammo/bullet type/weight? Reloads or factory? I'd like to do a 9mm build just to burn up my stash of 9mm Major ammo! (The uber glock, cool as it is, just doesn't shoot like a $4K race gun, go figure...)

Range report # whatever Took rifles out this morning but rifle range was shut down, fortunately for me I had the AR40 and a Winchester M94 in 45 Colt so we went over to the bullseye side. The Spike lower ran flawless. LRBHO 100%. Filed a little off the shoulder of the 12 dollar cheapo 30 round mag, good lock up and smooth release. No feeding problems at all. The $129.00 Sightmark is still holding a solid zero on the 50 yard target. Gives the Winchester a run for its money. Laser still couldn't be seen out past 10/12 yards even with heavy overcast. Ordering a Spikes pistol upper for a carbine build on the second receiver. How does a blowback system work on a 16" barrel? I have A KVP I bought a while back. I'm thinking a little slower burning powder, upper end of the load data table, and 10 oz buffer. Should be able to get close to 1200 fps out of a 180 gr bullet, (Maybe...)

These what you refer to? https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1003368197/kns-hammer-and-trigger-pin-2nd-generation-2nd-modification-non-rotating-ar-15-small-pin-154-stainless-steel

Not to be outdone! Really liked the 40 caliber ar pistol, was thinking of upgrading the magtork adapter blocks to a to a Stern Defence, looks like a nice block but $179.00... Stopped one of my favorite shops today and picked up a couple Spikes Tactical pistol lowers for 169.00 ea, transfer included. Pulled the Anderson lower off and built the Spikes, installed the upper, cycled a few rounds through, ready for the range. LRBHO has been achieved. Mags need a hard seat, and takes a good push on the button to release, but I have the gen 1 style drop frees with the shoulders, I'll take a file along and maybe take a little off.

Pretty cool, what's the receiver?

Added another pistol: AR-40 S&W build "Fun at the rockpit" Budget Build Everything bought on sale/ on the cheap except BCG and buffer, went with a retail Stern Defence BCG and a 7.5 oz KVP pistol buffer. Aero Upper Anderson Lower TorkMag Magwell blocks for glock mags KVP 4" barrel and linear comp Ebay pistol brace and handguard Sightmark Ultra Shot R-Spec Reflex Sightmark Low Pro Mini green laser Stern Defence BCG- (single most expensive part of the whole build!) KVP 7.5 OZ buffer Shoots better then I could have expected. Flings brass like a madman, 30 feet + at 4:00 Very pleased with the Sightmark R-Spec and KVP barrel, drills the center ring at 50 yards repeatedly, way more accuracy then I was expecting for a $79.00 4 inch barrel and $129.00 red dot sight. TorkMag mag well block system fed well except sometimes fumbled the last round, a little adjusting and it has been flawless ever since. No LRBHO, I suppose can live with that if everything else is screaming. 23-1/2 inches of fun.

OK, thanks for the input. This is what I did at the bench today, worked great. I could support the butt with my off hand and drill some nice groups.
-
Loading the bipod is a pretty good description of what gets me the best groups. Unforgiven, don't quite understand what you are saying about the shims
-
Hello, All When shooting off bench, sandbags or bipod, I do not get a good group unless I have my off hand gripping on the floating guard or front angled grip. When I wrap my arm around and under stock and support the stock like Hollywood snipers the group opens up, even though it seems to be more stable. Am I missing something? Thanks Al
