  1. Wanted to run some 224 val kilmer stuff anyway :-). So rough guess is that missing wind speed by 2.5 mph at 1300 yards is equiv to roughly 30 yards error in range measurement ?? That being a perfect wind over something like the Viale range at camp perry, known for it's high but steady predictable winds :-). 224 Valkrie 88 grain ELD zero 1300 yards 1300yards 10 mph wind 160.1” wind drift 1275 yards +28.2 POI 153” wind 1325 yards -29.9 POI 167” wind 224 Valkrie 88 grain ELD zero 1300 yards 1300yards 12.5 mph wind 200” wind drift (40 inches more wind drift from 2.5 wind increase) 1275 yards +28.2 POI 191” wind 1325 yards minus 29.9 POI 209” wind ran 15 mph wind, another 40” increase in drift from 10mph.
  2. Covering the same 20 miles probably 500 times with a 1/4hp motor pushing the bike against the wind really gives a different look into how different the same exact terrain can be as far as wind exposure on different days. Bill
  3. It is OK if we do not agree :-). Not sure what ya'al see where you live when it is "windy". it is 33F here this morning. The wind is a mere 14 ESE today. I am doing some shop cleaning, will have to see if I can find my laser wind finder :-). They actually put on a nice class at Camp Perry that covers estimating wind values from the provided wind flags on the ranges. That is a nice open 1000 yard deep area however without anything to break the wind partway of the 1000 yards. Bill
  4. The range can be measured, the wind, and most esp when wind exposure changes between muzzle and target not so much. So for me wind will always be #1 for longer ranges. Bill
  5. I remember seeing a product at Brownells, cannot find it now. But it was a UHMW or other plastic disk that they intended you to stick on the front face of the buffer. If that was made to the correct dimensions it might work. it would more or less create a stepped front face on the buffer.
  6. Yes I did see that some of those can attachments actually scored pretty decent as brakes too
  7. If one is good maybe two are better :-). I’m using the original PSA buffet tip in a different body. Buffer tips may differ in durometer ?
  8. I think there might be more going on than just the "dry fit" for lack of a better term. My PSA setup on the bench the BCG cannot hit the lower, but in live fire it plainly does. The only way that can be happening IMHO is if the rubber tip on the buffer is compressing. I dropped one quarter down in the tube and the bolt will still lock back but I have not yet taken a sharpie to the divots in the lower and fired more rounds to see if the quarter did the trick :-).
  9. Another issue with some brakes which may be very good, and excellent $/performance ratio is "can I buy one" ?? If they are not in stock somewhere IMHO it does not matter how good they are ;-).
  10. https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2016/02/jeremy-s/308-muzzle-brake-test/ There is the 308 version of the same test. No Miculek in the mix there tho. Read through the muzzle devices thread, had been through it before but not into any of the links included. Some of the links in there are old and dead.
  11. I'm with you on all of that actually :-). Will dig into the material you mentioned :-), I love material :-). My take from it was that thew Miculek scored really well. That gives me some faith in whoever designed it...it could be that some co make excellent 5.56 brakes...and make other calibers that TOTALLY suck ;-)......or it could be that companies make good brakes, and some make some that suck in all calibers :-). As to gas piston or DI......he had the gas system totally turned off, so that makes zero difference really, IE DI turned all the way off would be the same as gas piston turned all the way off ?? The most important thing to ME is to NOT buy a $250 brake that TOTALLY sucks :-)...some of those 5.56 brakes WAY down the list were pretty expensive....they may have other qualities not related to recoil reduction that redeem them somehow, and the guy does say that in the video too. Bill
  12. https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2014/11/jeremy-s/556-muzzle-device-shootout/ There is the 5.56 brake test...note how well the $16 amazon 3 port did :-).
  13. A friend is fighting with Lanolin right now. it contaminated his stainless steel wet tumble pins and the inside of his wet tumbler. I have used it for case forming and had a really tough time cleaning it off the cases afterwards. it survives a soak in really how water and Dawn dish soap, survives several tries of that actually. Bill
  14. The wind is the the biggest factor IMHO :-)...esp when you get screwy stuff like a 600 yard shot where 300 is exposed to wind and 300 is not. Riding a bicycle for miles and miles will give you a new respect and feeling for how terrain and even crops like corn influence the wind. Bill
  15. Counting them was a challenge for me too, on the orange perhaps I counted the final wrap and not on the PSA ? A spring rate checker would be the best way ?
  16. I have a coil count on the orange spring in my noob PSA build thread. It was actually very close to the count for the spring PSA included in my complete lower.
  17. I’ll find the test and link it up. I still have the table of results up on computer at home
  18. No but I am interested. I found a test on YouTube of 20 or more 5.56 brakes and the Muculek was in the top 3 and for sure not nearly the most expensive. The tester used a rifle in a lead sled and allowed it to slide on a plastic table. His method seemed to repeat shot to shot.
  19. Looks nice :-). Those sales will get us every time :-). Bill
  20. Aero gives the actual lengths of the M5 handguards 9" - 9.19", 12" - 12.63", 15" - 14.94" . They also state Measuring from rear face of the barrel extension the barrel is 11.75 to the muzzle. I think I am going to gamble on the 12", if the muzzle is 1" or so back into the hand guard that will be fine. https://miculek.com/product/mic-comp-30-miculek-compensator-30-caliber-308/ Bill
  21. Well with a 12" rail the rear of the can would be inside the rail a little, roughly an inch at most ?? Bill
  22. Well I was pondering what difference the M5E1 and a regular upper as to rail length. Looking at pictures again it looks as if the E1 and a regular M5 with the same exact hand guard would turn out the same as far as muzzle sticking past the end of the rail ? Some folks seem to like to bury a can right up inside the rail, but maybe that is Pistol caliber stuff ??
  23. Read jtallen83's thread and it inspired me :-). Aero M5 lower on the way, Brownells has them on sale for $80.99 with a promo code for 10% off. Will use the Sig 716 12.5" barrel and the Sig 716 bolt. Thinking about the Aero M5 upper with 12" M-lock rail. Future will bring a 30 caliber can of some kind so not having muzzle sticking out of the rail would be ok, need to sketch it up and see where things will fall. Bill
  24. Some fellow maintenance guys at work did not know I am a machinist, I have made up parts we needed using the lathe and or or mill and they ask "where did you find that?"....I tell them "it was inside a length of bar stock that was on the steel rack :-)". Bill
  25. Put a 4.5x14x40 leopold on top to get a better idea how it will shoot. WW 150 grain powerpoint factory ammo best I could get was around 2" at 75 yards. Took 10 fired cases, reloaded them with 42.0 varget, CCI 200 primer, and some 173 grain FMJ. Forst group was .862 for 5 shots at 75 yards, second was just over 1". So the $59 barrel is not a total wash accuracy wise anyway :-). Need to get some better bullets and brass. The 173's are some older M118 we used to buy from DCM (predecessor of the CMP) bulk packed in an ammo can for $.04 each in the 1980's. Not nearly as good a bullet as say Sierra match kings, but not a terrible bullet by any means :-). The bullet would the the one on the left. Bill
