What do you have on order or in the mail? Part 2

LOL - I was going to say - the "NOT A MEDICAL DEVICE" admonition in the instructions sheet had me exploring a nostril immediately... I'm sure I'm not the only one. 🙂 -

Arken 6-24X50 FFP optic Hoping to have it on or around Independence Day - but not holding my breath... They, like everyone else, are having huge supply issues. My son got his 4-16 and it is fantastic for what it cost - looking forward to replacing the old basic Burris that came on the AR-10(T). -
When I did my research on them I spoke with a bunch of guys including Phil Arrington (local to me but nationally respected national match armorer - he knows a thing or two... you can read about him here Arrington - and if you are doing M14 / M1A stuff I highly recommend him). What I got from him was that the Springfield guns were excellent - and that for the most part the value add in buying USGI as opposed to Springfield was longevity. When I asked him to quantify this he said something to the effect of "I'd start to worry about a Springfield receiver at about 100,000 rounds... the USGI receiver should be good through 250,000 rounds..." What I came away with was that the Springfield receiver and parts were very well made and that they are of a quality that should last nearly everyone a lifetime. Given that, on a good day, match grade 7.62X51 rounds are going to cost you $1.00 each, I'm guessing that replacing my Springfield M1A because I've worn it out is not a problem I'll ever afford to have... 🙂

The 2X 10’s and 2X 25s arrived promptly from Armalite. Given that this will be mostly a -a-rt shooter I should probably just buy a few more 10’s. 😁

Can't comment on the price other than to say that it is a few hundred dollars more than the "sale price" that I used to see for them when I was looking a couple of years ago - but that is probably to be expected with the change in the market over the last years. I can tell you that I'm a huge M1A fan-boy, that my first "bucket list gun" years ago was an M1A Loaded with near full national match conversion (everything except bedding) and that they are great guns. I've not been totally sold on the SOCOM variant as I'm not an operator who needs to carry a single weapon to use both at moderate range and when clearing houses so for me the SOCOM is pretty much limited to "cool points" for me... I'm a function over form guy and there are not a lot of scenarios in my middle-class suburban life where a CQB .30 cal is the best tool. If I'm shooting 7.62X51 I'm shooting at things more than 100 yards away and I want more barrel than that - and if I'm defending my home against an armed intruder I'll grab my Mossberg 590. If the zombie apocalypses occurs I'm probably grabbing the Tavor TS12... 🙂

Thanks sir... same pattern. and it looks like yours is deeper. As noted in the other reply - I'm guessing I'll buy a replacement and keep this one as a spare... -
ArmaLite AR-10(T) - Initial Thoughts / Questions
BigNate replied to BigNate's topic in General Discussion
Pretty sure that it is an indentation - but I'll pull it apart tonight and be sure. Sounds like I'll replace it - and keep it as a spare... 🙂 -
So - I've recently picked up an ArmaLite AR-10(T) and I got out this weekend and put a few rounds through it. The glass that came with it is pretty basic and I'm pretty rusty - and given these things I'm really happy with how it shot. For whatever reason I took a photo of the first group but no others. Anyway - the first 100 yard group is posted below - and I knew the flyer was a flyer when I let it go... So - one question... The cam from the BCG has a noticeable groove in it (see the red oval). I know in the auto engine world anything that can "catch a nail" is a problem - and I can catch a nail in this thing. I'd guess it is a few thousandths deep. I've never seen this sort of groove in an AR-15 platform cam - not sure how worried I should be?
-
Well - they had 5s, 10s, and 25s... I went ahead and ordered a couple of 10s and a couple of 25s... this being mostly a bench gun I'm guessing that the 25s won't see much use - but I'll be glad to have a couple. Thanks for the suggestion.
-
OK - just recovered my account there - they are $35 for the 5, 10, 15, 20 rounders and $43 for the 25 rounders - but they only have the 5 and 10 round mags in stock.
-
They are there - and priced at about $35 but there does not seem to be an option to purchase them... I'm guessing they are backordered. I've got an email out them as their office is about 10 miles from where I'm sitting now - and I'm hoping to be able to drop by and buy a box of them (they say "sales visits by appointment only")...
-
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!" LOL... If by "scrapped" you mean "threw it in a box to dispose of later" please let me know - I'll give you a few bucks for it... 🙂
-
Sooooo... how do I get to know your friend? 🙂 I've got 2X 20rd and 2X 5 rd mags with mine - and that is not enough. I've found a spot that claims to have Armalite 10607003 mags (25 round AR10 mags - that "LOOK" like the ones that you show here)... However, I'm finding a bunch of conflicting information as to what the various names mean. I understand that my "AR-10(T)" wants AR-10B magazines... I see the name SR25 associated with some (I assume that this means "Stoner Rifle"?) which USUALLY are associated with stuff that is clearly not for my gun - but sometimes the picture matches these... I presume that those pics are in error? Are there multiple generations of straight steel mags that look like these - or only one and they all will fit my "B" gun?
-
That mag fits an M1A / M14. It won't stick in the AR-10 because the mag catch on the M1A grabs that block on the back - and on the AR-10 the release / hold slots into the little rectangular hole on the side that is not there on this one. I seated one of my M1A mags in the AR10 and the bolt catches on the back of the mag - bolt won't go all the way home with the magazine seated. I understand that it won't cycle with rounds in it due to the lack of the vertical notch in the back of the mag. I've read that the M1A will cycle / function with an AR-10B mag in it but that the bolt won't catch when empty - although I can't see how that would work well unless you physically held the mag in place as the AR-10B mags are missing the lug that the mag release catches to hold the mag in place.

What made you decide to move to the 308 AR/AR-10 Platform?
BigNate replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
I carried an M-16 A2 for a number of years - and always hated feeling like I was shooting a pea-shooter... I always wanted something that sent more than 55 - 62 grains down-range. As soon as I was able I transitioned first to an M249, then M-60, then M2 - all three of which made me happy and got me out of hours of cleaning M-16s. My first personal "battle rifle" was a heavy barrel M1A with some NM goodies. At the time I was really down on the AR type action and loved both the functionality and ties to history that I found in that platform. I eventually gave in and bought some AR15 platform stuff, and while I appreciated the reduced cost to shoot - I really don't care for the cartridge. A couple of years ago I decided to start looking for an AR-10 type gun, and I bought a bare lower or two thinking I'd build one - but was waiting for some funds to free up because I really wanted to do it right. Well - that may still happen - but I stumbled on an ArmaLite AR-10(T) from a long time friend - so what finally drove the decision to dive in was... well... a good deal on a good gun... 🙂 -
Thanks guys…. Looking forward to putting some rounds through it this weekend.
-
Was really hoping to hear that! Thanks!

Asked google for "AR-10 forum"...
-
Thanks much... I'll be replacing the scope with something a bit better, and hopefully will get it out to cut some paper this week. I believe that it is a "B" variant - it is stamped AR-10(T) with a US 30#### serial number. I've found mixed info as to what I can read into that - but I'm working off of the fact that it uses the notched M14 style magazines. Hopefully it'll be a better gun than I am a shooter...

Greetings all... New to the AR-10 platform - but not to stuff around it. I'm an old M1A guy who likes guns that move more than 62 grains down-range. I bought a bare AR-10 lower a while ago with the intent of building when time permits, but just ran into a deal and picked one up from a friend. I know only a little about it (what I could glean from a few minutes with google before going to pick it up) but the bore is clean / clear, it all appears to cycle, and it comes from a person that I know takes good care of his stuff (and who I know would tell me if he knew something was wrong). Anyway - looking forward to diving in, learning the platform, and shooting the new rig. It is definitely a bench gun - I agree with what I saw in another thread - that these AR-10(T) want a motorized bipod to move the front end around... 🙂
