So do you guys think this is these big AR's are about to take off?
98Z5V replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
I think it's going to take off - it's gaining steam right now, and that's for sure. Last year's gun scare kind of "pushed" it along, too. A whole LOT of people thought the needed to buy an AR-15-based weapon because they'd never get to if they "were banned." The shortage pushed some of those people into what WAS available to them, and that was a .308-based platform. Now those people are picking up the 15, after the initial purchase of a .308. Big-bore ARs are just going to keep going, IMHO. .458 SOCOM, 6.5, 6.8 - all of them. The general, mainstream interest in the big bores is only starting to take off right now, and the traditional AR owners are looking at them as options. When they see ammo availability and price, they turn to the .308 instead - that's honestly what I ended up doing. I was headed the direction of the .458 originally. I made a pretty thought out decision to go to the .308 for common ammo, and personal supply (already have a .308 bolt gun). Lastly, there are SO many manufacturers rght now making a .308 system, and the quality is astounding. Kaiser and Iron Ridge are extremely high quality. CMMG is good. Right now, I don't think there's a bad manufacturer, and more and more keep popping up. The completes like the LaRue OBR and the Noveske N6 are fantastic. Fulton Armory's Titan, too. With the market really expanding like this, and choices all over, it can't help but gain unprecedented popularity. My $0.02... -
You're gonna love the stuff I'll post up here then... ;D

Here's what the little beast looks like - BSA RD-30 red dot on it, and the T6 furniture:

My Moss 930 SPX auto - I love this thing... I've also got a Moss 835 pump, chambered for the 3 1/2" shells, and a Moss 500 that I inherited from my grandfather. Love the Mossbergs! ;D

I'm pretty sure I've got pics of the modded stock piece into the auto bolt release, and the trigger polishing, so I'll dig them up. I probably can't get the pics to you until Monday, though.

Got the BCM Gunfighter Mod 3 in the mail today. I'll get pics into this thread in a little while. Pretty nice item. Here it is, with the 5.56 Mod 3 handle on bottom, the new one in the middle (Mod 3, large latch also), and the stocker on top: Quite the difference in what's "grabbable...": Another 5.56 vs. .308 comparo: Very, VERY nice clearance at the back of the scope: Drew, I'll get you some better pics in better light. Sun is going down here now, so it's not so good. Bottom line - one-handed, even more -one-finger- charging is incredibly easy now. Makes a HUGE difference, even on the .308. A very worthy upgrade, IMHO.

I've got one that I put in the Tapco T6 stock kit and slapped a little red dot on it - pretty good little shooter. The only thing else that I've done to it are mod the bolt hold-open so it's an auto bolt release, put a Buffer Tech bolt stop in it, and polished the trigger engagement surfaces. What kind of stuff are you looking for?

Man, I completely missed that... Thanks!

thinking about picking up a stripped lower from Tactical Machining, the guys that sell the 80% lowers and the jigs. They sell finished lowers, also, and their DPMS-compatible stripped lower is on sale for $200 right now. Anybody used one of these before? Any comments? It'll be here tomorrow, but thanks a ton! Turns out that I was getting the gas block through a local place, and they forgot to order it... Just my luck. Now, instead if it getting in tomorrow, it won't be until Monday or Tuesday. This is killing my "I'll shoot it by Tuesday" plan. At any rate, the stuff should all be here early next week, so it's getting shot before the end of the week, for sure.

Forward Assist is too long
98Z5V replied to MrLowandSlow's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Okay, measured my punches. 0.060" diameter punch (1/16") was small enough, but it'll get stuck in the center of the roll pin. Next size up was 0.090" diameter (3/32"), and it's too large to fit inside the hole for the roll pin. The 4d nail was 0.080" in diameter, and that thing does the trick. Just grab one at a hardware store (small pack, probably), and grind the point off so it's flat. You won't have to worry about getting the thing stuck inside the roll pin. You'll need a long 4d nail. The 1.5" nail I was using would grab and hold the F/A in place, but it's not long enough to go all the way through there and drive the pin all the way out. Something 2" would probably work, and certainly a 2.5" would do it. Hang onto the F/A when you tap it out - once it clears that roll pin, it'll fly under spring pressure. Big parts, so they'd be easy to find, but they'll still fly. -
Forward Assist is too long

It's WAY easier to un-install it yourself! ;D I had to put mine in a stripped upper 3 times to get it right... yeah, no joke... which is probably why I said what I said... :-[ I thought I had it, two-handed, and the damn thing was WAY in the chamber... Pushing in on F/A, holding roll pin, whacking hammer... Big Sad Face for me. I had to figure it out. You can drive that roll pin out from the bottom (the right way to do it) on the DPMS upper. If you're using a punch, you'll need a LONG punch. If you're using that nail I talked about, you'll need to be CAREFUL... if you hit that nail head hard and flare the end of that roll pin, it's gonna flare and stick - right where it is. I'll try to get a diameter of a punch you'll need for it. My stuff it already together, and I didn't measure the diameter of the roll pin before I put it in. I'll get that info in here tomorrow... -
YEOW!!! :o There's some NIIIIICE stuff in that link!!!

Still waiting on a rifle length gas tube, so I can shoot this damn thing - and now I'm waiting on the BCM Gunfighter large-latch charging handle... Timing is good for their release-vs-my build, but it's gettin' shot before that C/H shows up! ;D

I like the Magpuls - one set on a 5.56 14.5" gun. I've got a GG&G rear flip-up on a 16" gun with a fixed front triangle, and it's nice (and old). I'll be putting the new Magpul lower profile setup on my 20" 5.56 for sure, and possibly on the .308, if they'll fit under my scope. They're good sights at a great price, man.

Forward Assist is too long

Who put the forward assist in the upper? Did you receive it assembled, or install it yourself? Reason I ask is when you're installing it yourself, it's really a 3-hand job - you need 3 hands to do it properly. Since none of us ever asks a buddy over to help out, we "manage" it... ;D If the F/A was pushed in too far when the roll pin was installed, it could have caught an extra coil on the F/A spring - which would have it setting too far in the chamber when installed. That would be on whoever installed the F/A, be it you or where you got the assembled upper from. I used a 4d nail (perfect diameter of the roll pin and hole) that was 1.5" long, and inserted the thing in from the bottom - it was long enough to catch the F/A assembly in place while I beat the hell out of the roll pin, in from the top. Worked like a charm, and the roll pin going in knocked the nail right out the bottom. My $0.02... -
Well, like a dumbass, I wasn't looking at what I checked for shipping. I didn't even look at the order details until the confirmation was sent to my email. I apparently checked the "USPS Priority" block somewhere in there... ::) When it gets here, I'll shoot some semi-decent pics of it separate, and in the gun. I'll for sure let you know when the thing gets here. I ordered the large latch, Mod 3 version, and I've got a Mod 3 AR-15 version I can set it beside for pics.

Bravo Company just got the new .308 Gunfighter charging handles in stock - just got the email notification, hopped online and ordered it. If anybody has been waiting for one, grab them quick. Who knows when more will be available, or when their quantity will sell out.
-
Right on, man - you'll love the thing. ;D Just ordered up the new BCM Gunfighter .308 charging handle myself.
-
Drew, if you want to borrow this thing and try it out, let me know. I'll be zeroing the .308 no later than next Tuesday, and I can send it out after that. Don't know when I'll get to shoot again, but I can use bags after that, if you still have it. If you want to give it a test drive, just say it. Shoot the info to me, and I'll get it out to you.
-
I recommend it enough that I'll buy another one for my .308, so I don't have to switch them out. ;D That one pictured is for the 5.56 precision gun. I'll grab a weight on it right now, and edit up this post with the details. Highly, highly recommend it, big time. EDIT - 504 grams = 17.778oz

I've got that very bipod, brother, the HD XDS. Lemme know what kind of pics you need of what part, anything about it, whatever. Tom

Minor update - small parts for the stripped upper came in today, so they went on. The forward assist parts and ejection port door parts. Later this week I'll have the charging handle, gas tube and pin, and lo-pro gas block. At that point, it'll be a shooter. Range update, depending on parts arrival, will be no later than Tuesday afternoon, March 9th.

I haven't handled one of their AR-10 compatible lowers yet, but I do have one of their lowers for a 15. The thing is NICE. It's probably the nicest stripped lower I've asembled, including a YHM. Fit and finish is excellent, annodizing is very sweet, and the rear takedown detent hole was tapped already. Hopefully, and I won't doubt it a bit, their bigger sets are equally as nice. I thought I'd been on their website before, but now I can't find it to save my life. I must have been on a webpage detailing the company overview and a tour.

Dang! That didn't take long! ;D I just ordered the last few small parts for mine this morning. Hopefully I can shoot it by this coming weekend, barring any shipping delays. Looks good, man!
