Howdy from California (NorCal)

They only affect rail height.  Only.  In the DPMS section, we have a pinned thread that discusses the TWO rail heights that will concern you.  The third rail height is the High Rider.  Don't think you'll find a blank High Rider to machine.

But if I understand Farkle! there are different uppers, even for Gen I.

My head hurts. :-[

There are four different upper receiver rail heights for the LR-308 family.

-LR-308 G1 Low

-LR-308 G1 High

-LR-308 G1 High Rider

-LR-308 G2

Since the G2 is so new, there are no stripped G2 uppers available (nobody makes or sells them), nor are G2 complete standalone uppers for sale, so you don't need to worry about it being a G2.

The above is exactly what I've been trying to understand. I see what you're saying now as the bottom of the charging handle is the same on both, it's the top that matters.

In this sense, as long as I match up the upper with the rail I use, I should be good to go...(as long as the fit is acceptable where the upper and lower mate. I might be able to use some dykem and rub to get a nice fit.

I read that thread in the DPMS, and will read it again. Seems I'm ok with matching the rail up, if the lower is the same on DPMS.

Well, yeah, there's various info in different forums, pinned documents, etc...and parts as well. I guess I'm slow in sorting it out, I still haven't made any final decision on what I will build yet, whether I will go entire upper, build upper, etc...

Since it appears you have your info straight, I'm taking the liberty of locking this thread. Thanks to the regulars for helping get this sorted out, and if anyone is reading this as a newcomer, I hope it is helpful to you.
