Someone asked me this recently, "What is the longest successful shot taken by a soldier with a rifle at night?"

<dontknow>  My guess was probably 600-800 yards.  Just a guess.

My belief is that the ROE heavily restrict any night time shooting by people with rifles, with higher ups instead choosing to leave that work up to Apaches, Spectres, and on-station bombers.

What are our troops issued currently for night time scopes?

Some pretty badass equipment!  PVS-29s in front of magnified optics, PVS-14s for smaller carbines.  I still miss the PVS-4 - it was a boat anchor!!!  <lmao>

I don't recall what they called the night sight on my M-60, this would have been in late 1986, but I could easily mow down the vehicle sized targets at 800 yards from a tripod. The range officer stopped me so the choppers that were coming in would have something left standing to shoot at >:D . I was awarded top 60 gunner for the 8th Division that rotation, I only ranked mid pack while at the 1/75th.......

God I loved that weapon <thumbsup>

I have to believe todays tech would extend that range a good bit.......

That's what I would think too but I can't find any good, solid references.
