Alright. Ordered rifle length buffer, spring, and new rifle ext. tube.

Is making uppers from scratch parts (buying blank upper then adding barrel, bcg, gas block, hand rail, barrel but, etc) really that much more difficult for .308 variants?  Do you all recommend buying complete upper or piece mealing?  I do not want another mechanical failure. Are there any particulars to be aware of (I see a lot of bolts will come matched with barrels).

I recommend using the same Brand Manufacturers Upper receiver as the the Lower Receiver , be it buying a complete upper or building one from a striped Upper Receiver . always check Barrels Head Space when Building  or purchase the Bolt already head spaced when buying the Barrel , as you have mentioned , if using a Free Float Hand Guard , make sure the Rails line up on the Upper & HG . There are a few out there that are not compatible will one another , DPMS has several versions & Armalite is different , just to name a few .

Buying a complete Upper Assembly , most times you get what they build , building your own , you get exactly what you want .

Unlike the AR-15 there is no mil spec for the big boys. While some play ok together, you are safest to go with a set that was designed to work together instead of a set with minor variation in different spots that "might" work together.
