Mr Geep Posted October 15, 2011 Report Posted October 15, 2011 Poking my head into say "hi", and looking forward to learning something about my new rifle. I purchased a DPMS LR308 with the 24" barrel and the A3 style upper. I've attached a Leopold VX-II, 6-18x scope and after zeroing it in, my best group of the day was 1.51 inches at 200 yards with handloaded hunting ammo. (150 gr hornady v-max with H335 powder). I'm hooked for good now. I own several .308 rifles including a HK clone and a converted Saiga, which are allot of fun for blowing off allot of ammo, but I've found myself wanting to shoot longer and longer distances (accurately). Looking forward to listening to all of you and learning.
98Z5V Posted October 16, 2011 Report Posted October 16, 2011 From the mountains of Northern Idaho... - I'm actually jealous. <thumbsup>Welcome aboard, my good man.
fr3db3ar Posted October 17, 2011 Report Posted October 17, 2011 Welcome. Assuming this is not your first reload, Varget may work better for you than the H335. I use the H335 for my 55gr V-max loads but Varget for anything heavier.
Mr Geep Posted October 18, 2011 Author Report Posted October 18, 2011 Welcome. Assuming this is not your first reload, Varget may work better for you than the H335. I use the H335 for my 55gr V-max loads but Varget for anything heavier.I've eyeballed Varget for my heavier loads, but in my Speer book, it shows them as a "compressed" load, which I haven't done. The other reason I've stayed with the H335 is that I can use the same powder for my 5.56 loads. Any pointers on the compressed loads?
fr3db3ar Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 My reloading experience is limited. There is debate (from what I read) on uncompressed loads, whether they are forward or rearward in the case at the time of the shot as to velocity and other variables. Too technical for me ;D So by that theory compressed would be better in my mind. As far as compression goes in my loads it's minor. I can feel the bullet touch the powder and feel it compress but I think we're talking thousandths in depth.I run 25.3 H335 on my 55s24.5 Varget on my 69s44.5 Varget on my 175s and46 Varget on my 150s.
