I'm glad you did it!  The Ruger American Scout was just released this year, 2026, and replaced my older M77 Hawkeye-actioned gun, completely. You're lucky you found it, because the .308 Win version is already sold out and I'm trying to find one...

Oh, Fuk GB, too.  MSRP on the new Scout is $929.  Street is $720~$740.  I'm not paying some clown on GB over MSRP for a gun - when you never pay MSRP for a gun...

Well i took this one out this morning and i will say it's a blast to shoot. this thing has the recoil of a 22lr. after i got it sighted in and you can see the holes where i moved it.

Once there it put them in one hole. shot at close to 50, maybe 45 yards off a front rest. that is 60 rounds on that target. i stuck that cheaper sight on, gonna leave it as it worked perfect.

So, I finally have a proper Scout Rifle.  The Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle came out in 2011, and I have a first-year model. It's the M77 Hawkeye receiver base, if you know anything about the M77 generations - it's the last improvement they made to the M77 line.  CHF barrel,10" twist, .308 Win, mag fed,forward rail - proper Scout gun.  Gorgeous laminated stock.

Well, this year,  2026,  Hi-Lux Optics finally decided to make a modern Scout scope.  Some of the stuff from the past was good, fit the methodology,  but was off somehow.  Burris had a great one, but it was fixed 2.75x power.  Vortex made one, it never really took off. And so on...

The Hi-Lux is a LER 2~7 power scope, 9~13" of eye relief, 12 ounces, and has a fiber optic battery powered center dot.  I got the green dot, over the red dot.  Put it in some too-expensive Leupold rings of the proper height, and it's perfect.  It runs a 200-yard zero in a BDC reticle, and has drops for 2, 3, 4, 5, 600 yards, calibrated for .308 Winchester.  It's the perfect do-anything gun, while not being the most badass gun at anything particular.  

The optical clarity of the glass is incredibly impressive.  It's got capped turrets - set it and forget it with the BDC - but under the caps, the turrets are very well marked, adjustable in true 1/4 MOA clicks (and not 1/4" clicks), and each click is very crisp and positive.  You know when you move it.  Overall, this is one badass Scout scope, and the absolute best thing on the market, if you're building a true Scout Rifle.

MSRP is $299, but they offer you a 5% code, and it's $286 shipped to your door - they don't charge tax, and shipping is free.  If this scope would have come out years ago, I'da bought it.  It just came out this year,  and I've never really been turned on by Scout scope offerings in the past.  I'm extremely glad I bought this thing. My 15-year-old Scout Rifle is brand new again...
