Don't I at least need an elongated button?

Nope.  You just don't thread the mag catch threads all the way flush with the button face.  On the large frames, it's usually about 3 threads short of flush.

Thanks 98

I think I could live with 2 or 3 threads short of flush; but from what I've read here and elsewhere the problem is the standard AR-15 button ends up hardly protrudes at all.

Here is Aero Precision's $5 extended button fix: https://www.aeroprecisionusa.com/extended-magazing-catch-button.

I'll try it both ways since I'll have all the parts & report back afterwards.

Sometimes it depends on the AR receiver in question.

The Long button may not be required but it can help with certain receivers.
On the other hand, in some cases the long button can be a problem. I seem to recall that the long button didn't work well with either the PSA PA-10 or maybe the Mega MATEN lowers. I had one of the long buttons but found the cutout in the receiver wasn't deep enough for it.
