  1. I am finally starting, just starting, to dig out from under moving. Looks like I missed contributing to the 80s. a couple months ago. I might have to dig a few things out from obscurity anyway.
  2. I'll reiterate to him. Hopefully he'll let me know how it goes. I'll be about 4.5 states away by then.
  3. Two potential issues on paper... gas tube/barrel nut/gas key alignment and gas port size. The OTHER problem is that he just mentioned to me yesterday is that the gas tube port in the barrel nut was just slightly misaligned. In his excitement to get it finished, instead of fixing the alignment he buffed the end of the gas tube to fit through the misaligned hole. So the end of the gas tube is buffed smaller AND the tube is probably flexed a little bearing on the nut and/or the upper receiver. That means it probably doesn't align too well with the gas key. For the first time yesterday he mentioned that the action was catching as he attempted to draw the bolt back with the charging handle and that the bolt would close when he pulled it back and let it go but that if he eased it down it might stand off on the gas key. With respect to the race gun parts... I can only suggest the parts to him before he goes out and buys the 'mall ninja tacticool' stuff or gets AR-15 parts instead of the .308 specific bits he needs. I gave him a spreadsheet of the suggested parts. IF I were him: I'd fix the barrel nut alignment. I'd replace the gas tube with one that was unmolested and verify he hasn't screwed up the gas key by dropping it on a misaligned gas tube. THEN if necessary I'd step up the gas port with the orange spring and heavy buffer in place until it balanced out and worked. Part of the reason I gave him the spring and buffer is I feel a little guilty since he started this path and I'm going to be out of area before he finishes it. I've offered to do the first two items but he wants to trade the handguard and figures he's not in a hurry to get it working now and might as well do the gas tube and alignment when he does the new barrel nut/handguard. I might even buy the old handguard from him but I don't need more crap to move halfway across the country.
  4. Well, as it turns out he's not been able to make it run with parts swapping. He mentions that the barrel nut was slightly misaligned and he 'buffed' the gas tube to get it together. So the gas tube is probably slightly misaligned as well as the tip being malformed. I wish he'd mentioned the misalignment. I'd have tweaked it for him. I offered to realign it but he plans to swap the handguard to one with a different style barrel nut that has more alignment options and reassemble with a new gas tube. He didn't want to deal with the current one any more. I gave him the orange spring and heavy buffer just in case as I won't be local to help him on it. He'll need a few more tools to do the barrel installation.
  5. The M5 receivers are good stuff. I own two M5 receiver sets that I've built and a friend built another couple. I don't know if he's had his second gun to the range but the first three run like tops. I have another M5 receiver set right beside me in a box with a collection of parts as I type this ready to build. A friend of mine owned a shop here in CA for several years and sold Aero Precision receivers in both the large and small frames and AFAIK there were never any complaints about the receivers. One of the shop guys probably built a dozen or more guns on the M5 receivers. I have a coworker who built up a M5 set who is having some issues right now getting his gun working but no complaints about the receiver. His problems appear to be not enough gas and trying a non-standard recoil system.
  6. I've got a bud with an Armalite rifle and an Armalite Carbine. He wants a SFAR bad. Although in his words he doesn't NEED it. The price and the weight are very tempting to him.
  7. As the title says, I'm asking for a friend and as such I'm afraid I don't have pictures and I'm still trying to get some exact info from him... 1) NOT an Armalite AR10 Recoil System He has a .308 JP Precision (JPSCS2-10 I think) captured spring assembly that claims to be designed to work in standard 7" M16/M4 length buffer extension tubes used on DPMS LR-308. https://www.jprifles.com/buy.php?item=JPSCS2-10 2) 5 oz for the JP Precision captured system according to the link above. 2a) He has also tried a Expo '.308 Heavy' carbine buffer' that claims to be 5.3 oz that weighed in at 5.1 oz on my baker's scale. 2b) He has also tried a Aero Precision .308 buffer that weighs 3.8 oz. (verified on my baker's scale. 3) The JP Precision captured system claims to be compatible with the 7" buffer tube. 2a) Sample measured 2.502" for the Expo 5.1 oz .308 carbine buffer. (I've seen these +/- ~.015" maybe) 2b) UNKNOWN but the Aero .308 carbine buffer came in close to 2.5". 4) AR-15 mil spec buffer tube internal length just shy of 7". (~6.95") 5) Whatever JP Precision uses in their 'standard' .308 system? 5a) He has also tried a Sprinco Orange .308 Heavy Carbine spring. 5b) He has also tried an Aero Precision .308 gold colored spring. (It's a bit longer than the Sprinco but a lighter spring rate. (I don't have the number of coils or wire diameter etc..) 6 & 7 & 8.) Gas system length AR-15/DPMS .308 rifle length. I don't have an exact measurement of the gas tube length that he is using or a photo down the mag well. He has assured me that the gas tube is in the exact center of the M5 cam pin cutout looking down the magwell. 9) No photo of the bolt face but it is an Aero Precision .308 bolt carrier group. I think it is NiB finish. 10) No photo available. 11) Gas Journal Dia = .75" UNKNOWN Gas Port DIA. Another barrel identical to the one he is using allowed a .089" drill shaft that measured .088" to pass through the port into the barrel. It would NOT allow a drill marked .093" to pass through the port. (I have read in other threads that the gas port for this 18" length barrel with a .75" gas journal and a rifle length gas should be .095" minimum.) ADDITIONAL DETAILS: 18" Axem barrel (LOOKS like a Ballistic Advantage except for the manufacturer listed.) Nitride finish Barrel is marked '.308 WIN 1/10 4150 CroMoV' about mid length. There appears to be a proof mark over the chamber that looks like a half circle with a dot next to and centered on a short line. Aero Precision M5 receivers, Aero handguard, Aero BCG, Using one of the MagPul lightweight PRS stock. The rifle appears to be failing to extract and failing to load a second round after being touched off.
  8. Probably. Add a minor amount of red color blindness. Dark orange powder coat on the spring marked M4 Extra Extra vs. orange orange on the .308 one depending on the light and the verbage change had me wondering a little if I had a RED AR-15 carbine spring.
  9. So far, mine have worked. I noticed the difference in labels digging through the parts box while looking for spares for a coworker who has been having issues getting his gun to run. I dropped him one of the orange springs and a heavy buffer so he could check it out at the range tomorrow.
  10. So two of the ones I picked up a year or two ago were labeled .308 CARBINE EXTRA POWER. One I picked up six months ago was labeled M4 CAR EXTRA EXTRA. Neither came with an extractor spring.
  11. Glenn Zediker goes through a very similar evolution to produce a set screw A-frame front sight in his 2010 book The Competitive AR-15 Builder's Guide. I think he set it up for two set screws however. Apparently he passed away during the late unpleasantness. The first couple barrels I dimpled were cake. The last couple barrels I attempted to dimple were a cast iron pain in the posterior. I'm not certain if a cutting punch to break through the Nitride would have helped out or not.
  12. The parts look excellent. The barrel is going to take some fitting. I haven't looked into what exactly needs to be done but based on initial inspection the rear lugs on the barrel need to be trimmed down on the sides slightly to start. Once I get that to stop binding with the slide I'll see what else 'sticks' Not going to happen soon. The move and the new job is going to take some major effort.
  13. So I've generally bought Sprinco Orange .308 heavy springs for the large frame builds when I'm not using Heavy Buffers dot com product. I've got two of them with the same stock number listed above. The DESCRIPTION on one is: ".308 Carbine DPMS Patter Extra Power Buffer Spring" On the other the description is: "M4 / CAR-15 Extra Extra Power Buffer Spring" The length of the second spring is about 1/4" longer than the first one. (I assume normal manufacturing variation over the course of a couple batches/lots.) Color on the springs is close if not identical. At first I was concerned that the 'M4' spring was actually 'Red' but that's apparently only got one extra in the description and a different stock number.
  14. Yeah, wiki looks good but it's not always up to date.
  15. Correction: I have a BAR stock for a 300 Win Mag at Boyd's waiting to see if they agree to replace it. I sent it out a week ago and it isn't technically in the mail since they received it on Thursday but I haven't heard anything about what they are going to do. As for the parts box: I've got all the parts to build 4 of them with the exception of 3 optics. I need a few things for one of the 6.5 Grendels to build it up right and light plus an optic. I've been on hold because work has been a cast iron pain in the posterior I just haven't spent the time to assemble them. I'm on hold right now as I may be changing jobs and moving in the next month.
  16. email checked. I checked my password list and didn't come up with the one for this site. Might be under the stuff that's piled up on the desk over the last month.
  17. Nothing in the mail. 3X, 308 large frames in the parts boxes. 1.5X 6.5 Grendels in the parts boxes. .223 Wylde at least one in the parts box plus extras.
  18. Might be headed that way. Gotta beat CA but still, anything I need to know?
  19. Honestly NO CLUE what my password is now...

I've never been a huge fan of the Beretta tip up barrels, extractor less handguns or the .32 ACP. Since I've got a 1903 Colt and a 1907 Savage, I've considered the Beretta but so far haven't put the money down. I've got a Sig P238 .380 Auto and it's pretty awesome. No hiccups. I bought about a K or 2 of ammo when I got the gun. I picked up a box of Monarch at one of the sports shops when I was out of state. Not impressed with that box. One of my buds got one for his wife when he found she wasn't able to manipulate her long time P232 any longer. About a year later he got one for himself as a lighter alternative to his Commander. That was right before the lockdowns in Northern CA and the shop he got it from could have sold a dozen more right then but couldn't get them. My sister bought one of them right about the first of the pandemic. I told her to buy a case of ammo when she put it on order. AT THE VERY LEAST I told her to get a MINIMUM of 200 rounds. She put it off until she got the gun and was lucky to get a box of ball. I also have a Ruger LC380CA. It's ok but I'm not sure it will ever be a favorite. I've got the LC9conversion kit for it. A bit more power in the pocket sized gun.
  21. Back to Ti, I think of it as 2/3rds the strength of steel at about 2/3rds the weight. Stronger than the same volume of aluminum but heavier, lighter than the same volume of steel but not quite as strong. Sometimes useful for high temp applications say in and around jet engines and for separating people from money when used in camping, mounting biking, or other usually sporting goods equipment. I had a friend who built an ultra light carbine using V7 bits. It was cool but the cost for the delta weight wasn't worth it in my book. Most Ti parts on an AR are replacing steel for the weight savings.

  24. A convection oven is the prototype to the airfryer. My convection microwave from 1992 finally gave up the ghost right after I bought a stand alone air fryer. A couple weeks later I picked up a microwave air fryer. Two months later the stand alone air fryer was recalled.
  25. Speaking as a current engineer... management has moved the hydraulic pump three times in the past week and a half. They've made the lines twice as long and put the pump in position that just in case it springs a leak it it might be able to act as an afterburner. It's usually management or marketing that demands the engineering be upside down and backassward. Sometimes the customer is in there also.
