Well I ordered a barrel

Midway had the 308 18" SASS Fluted, Black Teflon Coated for $229. How could I NOT order one.

Yeow!!!  That's a great price!  <thumbsup>  What was the conclusion about the gas block on that thing?

not sure until I have the barrel in hand. The two DPMS blocks are nearly $100  :o

Ya need to take some measurements or compare the barrel to another, if possable . I'm just curious as to what is so different .

All I remember hearing was something about a tapered gas block on it.  I'm curious about what the "taper" really is (extent of taper), and why a regular gas block can't be used.  In all honesty, the stories of that have been what's keeping me from buying one of these barrels previously.

I should have it by midweek. Its coming to the office so I can draw it up on the spot.

I suspect this is more of DPMS making guns and parts that only fit nicely with their stuff.  They want to make more parts they cant deliver in a timely fashion  ::)

going out of memory, I believe the barrel was .936 where the gas block mounts. The gas port is about .300 from the shoulder on the barrel to the center  of the gas port.

My notes read that my 16" barrel ,the gas hole on the barrel is about 0.241" from the barrel shoulder , where the gas block would seat or stop .This measurement is not to dead ctr. of the gas hole , but to the near edge. I have a measurement of 0.288" to ctr. on my bbl..

Now if DPMS is making a bbl. that is different , Why? Why just one particular bbl. made with those specs. Granted ,I don't have a DPMS bbl. of any type , but why this one bbl. type or is this a change that is coming to all DPMS bbl.'s?

Ditto - I've got similar measurements to ss on alot of barrels.  My biggest reason for not getting a DPMS SASS barrel previously was the "tapered gas block" junk I'd seen.  Drew, is that a continuous .936 for the length of the gas block mounting area?  Does it neck down somewhere in the area a block would mount?  <dontknow>

If theres a taper its in the tenths as in  4 decimal places. Ill need to use better tools than I have here at my pc. Ill check it tomorrow

The gas port is about .237 from the shoulder.

That's right where most of mine have been.  That part seems pretty standard.  If this thing isn't tapered at all, I'm gonna kick myself in the ass for listening to teh interwebz...  :o <dontknow> <lmao>

Well Jon at the DPMS forum I believe stated they are different. I guess I need to order a block after I verify the the taper is fact or fiction

Of course with DPMS selling $100 gas block they perhaps need to invent a reason. I like Fulton Armory more each day.
