(THE GIST) — Two months after the military rolled out the Distinguished Warfare Medal for drone operators who sit for hours on end playing what amounts to a first-person-shooter in military-run, high tech-version of their dorm room, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has eliminated the medal. 

The discontinuation comes after some veterans and lawmakers — some of whom have served in combat from a forward position rather than from an ergonomic chair on a stateside military base — complained that the medal's order of precedence was above that of the Bronze Star, which is awarded for acts of heroism and valor in combat and not for toggling a joystick connected to model airplane 8,000 miles away.
