This problem has been a long time coming, NO ONE is learning manuals anymore, they (kids entering the industry) all want to start at the top, earn top dollar and just want to push buttons, the best cnc guys are usually guys that have run manuals for a long time first, and there aren't that many youg adults that want that type of job anyway because the country as a whole has been preaching that they must go to college for way too long. Now there is a generation of college graduates with useless degrees that can't find jobs. Everyone is just not cut out to go to college, some are just better suited and or have the natural ability to do the vocational jobs that are needing filled now. No offense intended to anyone but there is a big  difference between a cnc operator and a cnc machinist, I am sure there are a few of us here that understand what I mean.

Yup.

I went through the local CC's manual machine operator program, as that was recommended.

Industry wants button pushers.  Once in shops I never touched a manual machine until I got on nights.  At night the tool crib was closed, so we made our jigs, modified tooling, altered clamps, etc.

Having to explain zero and draw number lines is something manufacturers get tired of I'd imagine.

We had a Smithy Granite at the house here that we stumbled into.  You could easily hold anything to 0.001" but you could NOT hog off metal like a Bridgeport or a Bend.  Makes me wonder about the people who say Smithys are crap and no good, "don't hold tolerances".
