survivalshop
The POF rifle is AR15 , I used it to show that the rail height on the JP hand guard is the same for both the AR 308 & the AR 15, its the DPMS 308 Upper is a lower rail height. I can tell you the TM 10 from Tactical Machining is the same as the low DPMS , its in the top photo. I had a SI Defense Billet upper that is the old height & swapped it for the TM. & came up with a lower Upper rail with the JP hand guard. I think it would be an easier time finding & changing out the hand guard . Finding a 308 Upper may be a problem & I also like the JP hand guard & will use another one on my BRO build . You can use my SI Defense Gen. II, Upper till you find one , if you want , its just sitting here .I have no Plans for it at the moment . survivalshop
Not sure what receiver height this is ,but maybe you could contact them & see, they are in stock. http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/receiver-amp-action-parts/receivers/upper-receivers/ar-308-upper-receiver-prod64581.aspx
blue109
Honestly...you may end up paying more to swap uppers! Unless you are just dead set on that jp rail. Off the top of my head, Samson, Troy, apex, MI, make a rail for you. I'm sure there's a couple I'm forgetting.
rmart
At a glance that RedX item looks like it might just fill the bill. Fulton Armory is out of stock on their stripped uppers and won't have any until April at the earliest. They could not assure me that the new ones would be of the old dimensions. I've also read elsewhere that FA doesn't even sell stripped uppers anymore, only completely assembled units. @blue, I hear what you're saying. I see that the RedX upper receiver runs about $150 and my gunsmith says he'll swap them out for $100. That's $250. A new high-quality freefloat forend with rail will run at least that plus the money for installation. At this point, replacing the receiver seems to be the most cost effective way. survivalshop
Ask someone there to measure the Upper Receiver ,the measurements are on this sight , I think there is a Sticky on it .
98Z5V
All right, I can accept that. What I need then is the DPMS A3 upper that has the slightly higher rail height. That would be the Fulton, brother - DPMS makes them for Fulton, at the older DPMS spec, the slightly taller one. It's worth it to wait for it to come back in stock at Fulton. <thumbsup>
blue109
There's a stripped Fulton for $160 on AR15.com classifieds. Guy is in VA. Shoot, just looked again. It's sold :( Edited February 22, 2014 by blue109
rmart
Saw it first on GB, sent him an email, said he sold it on ar15.com seven minutes after posting it there. I just ordered a Red X upper from Brownells, we'll see how it looks when it gets here.

rmart
That's what he said. Fulton Armory was OOS on their uppers and could give me no assurances that when their new supply came in some time around April (maybe) that they would be of the gen 1 configuration or the gen 2, low profile configuration. Pete at Brownells checked and assured me the Red X upper was of the gen 1 configuration. I should get it in a couple days, I'll measure it out and see. Worst comes to worse I'll return it if it's not right and keep looking. Damn this OCD...
BigBore77
Hey guy. I don't know if it's too late, but I bought a Troy Alpha rail (old style clamp) off CheaperthanDirt for a decent price and it fits DPMS low profile perfectly. They had both high and low versions a couple of months ago. I also have a 15" JP tube that does not fit. On top of that, I cannot use that tube with iron sights because the front end moves about enough to through off aim point. Just a slight bump, like rifle jumps on recoil, will move the end 0.030" to 0.040". At 100 yards even a slight front sight shift moves your hit. So I will have to put optics on this beast or trash the expensive JP tube. I have tightened the 6 tiny screws as tight as I feel I can without stripping them and it helped, but didn't eliminate problem. I have not finished build with the Troy tube, so cannot say how well it does. Bottom line is that I think the suggestion of a railed gas block is the way to go for iron sights. That way you know the sight stays put relative to barrel centerline.
rmart
Update: After a couple of financial setbacks I replaced my upper with a RedX Arms upper. Looks good, fits good EXCEPT the front takedown pin is very snug and I need a tool to push it out. I'll either need to work it for a while until it loosens up or perhaps have a smith take a look at it and make sure it's fitted and the holes line up properly. Next step is the optic sight. I'm looking at the Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP scope. I like the way it looks in the store, glass is clear, reticle (MOA) is visible and readable, and focus appears good through all magnification levels (in the store...) Anyone have a scope they recommend over that one? Also, I'm looking for a good one-piece quick detach scope mount for such a scope. I know nothing, teach me. survivalshop
The front pivot pin may just be tight for a verity of reasons , none that I would worry about & it may loosen up with time . As long as you can remove it & there is no binding of other components in the upper . Check the" Optics/mounts" section for scope/mount reviews , there is good reviews on Vortex . I have one of there red dot sights on one of my 5.56 carbines & love it .
