My experience with my LR-308, and my HK-91 is that if you don't crimp you will get flyers caused by bullets being driven back into the case during the rather violent loading process. Perhaps polishing the feed ramp or adjusting the magazine feed lips might eliminate the problem, I simply crimp my ammo in a lee factory crimp die, canelure or not, and problem solved. If you occasionally notice missing primers from what is usually normal pressure rounds, that is also probably the cause.

BATFE Revises Policies on Firearms "Transfers"
SWshooter replied to imschur's topic in Firearm Industry News and Gossip
Yes, I hear they are thinking of offering him a job at homeland security with all the other devout muslims now working there, thanks to our " I'm not a Muslim" president. -
I'm thinkin' a rifle with the ergonomics of a FAL or AR with either a piston gas action or a roller HK type. MY requirements are that : 1. You must be able to operate the safety with the rifle in firing position without shifting your hand. 2. You must be able to operate the mag release from the firing position without shifting your firing hand. 3. must be able to insert new magazine without shifting your firing hand. 4. Must be able to cycle the action without shifting the firing hand or lifting your head off the stock. Either a FAL or HK type is good, I like the HK better because of the ease of locking the action open and closing it with the left hand. 5. Completely modular design allowing the ability to change barrel, stock, trigger group, and optics and/or iron sights in the field with 100% return to zero. Cartridge requirement: 1. Must be between .264-.284 in caliber. 2. Projectile must weigh from 100-140 grains. 3. must have a minimum muzzle velocity of 2800 fps. Would be nice if battle ammo was loaded in aluminum cases like Blaser ammo, and brass cases for reloadable practice ammo and match/sniper ammo. Other requirements: 1. A decent 3 point ambi sling. 2. 20, 40 and 100(beta type) round magazines that are easy to disassemble and clean. 3. A really good trigger would be nice for a change. 4. MOA accuracy with battle ammo in issue rifles would make those 600 yd shots a lot easier. What the heck, every soldier carrying a rifle should be a designated marksman. If you can't shoot than you should be driving a truck or scrambling eggs. Some of these requirements are available in some current battle rifle, they should all be available in one rifle and it should be ours. If we can spend trillions to bail out some civilians who can't manage their money properly, we should be able to supply our troops with the best battle rifle in the world. Thats my opinion anyway.

The wrench is good quality and the barrel nut is easily deformed, I'd wait for the wrench. Welcome to the site. Those of us who can't own suppressors are jealous :(

If you order the Fulton barrel, let us know how you make out with it. I ordered a complete lower from DSA and wanted it with the entry stock instead of the collapsible and they wanted to charge me $50 to put it on. I told them to just ship it and I'll put it on myself, then I'll sell the collapsible and be money ahead anyway. I wonder whats going to happen to some of these companies when things slow down and customers start expecting decent service.

They may not tell you, but alot of them picked up the first M1 carbine or M3 grease gun they found. Audie Murphy preferred the carbine and did pretty well with it, but he would have done better with an M4. I would hate to have to una$$ a humvee carrying a full size M14. I carried an M60 on and off choppers and in and out of 113's and it was a royal pain in the butt, not to mention the ammo. Ammo is a problem because an extra 40 or 60 rds can make the difference between living to fight another day and not. The military has done a piss poor job of supplying our troops with the best small arms available from the 1700's right up to today. Both the AR and the M14 designs are antiquated and so are the rounds they fire. Our troops should have something better than both.

Handloads for the 308 Win AR pattern rifle
SWshooter replied to Dusty44's topic in General Discussion
I have loaded bullets as heavy as 190 gr Hornady interlok? with decent accuracy and no problems with overall length. The 190's I crimp in the factory canelure with no problems. I shoot an LR-308 and an HK-91 and in my rifles it is necessary to crimp every round or the bullets will occasionally push back into the case and raise pressures. If the bullets aren't canelured then I use a Lee factory crimp die. My testing shows that even uncanelured bullets shoot more accurately with a decent crimp. I have been using Varget and H-4895 with good results. I'm up to 42 grs of H-4895 with the Nosler 168 gr match bullet and no pressure signs, function fine in my LR-308. In the Hk-91 I'm shooting Hanson 180 gr soft point spitzer because I have a bunch of them and don't care if the cases get screwed up by the fluted chamber. They are pretty accurate and 5 rds will usually do 1-1 1/4" groups at 100 yds. -
JP Enterprises Barrel kit for a new build?
SWshooter replied to msoto80010's topic in JP Enterprises
Part of the answer depends on what you are going to use the rifle for? The 24" bull barrel is great for bench rest shooting at long range, but if you plan on carrying it very far the medium contour would be a better choice. The DPMS barrels are production barrels and have no accuracy guarantee, if you require an exceptionally accurate barrel, than you should buy something that is specifically sold as a match quality barrel. -
You can buy a leupold VX-1 1-4x20 for about the same price, made in America, guaranteed for life, and a better optic if the Millet I own is any indication.

This is the page that mentions the AR-10 barrels. http://www.lothar-walther.de/473.php I don't know how to make it a link. I emailed them about a custom barrel and the reply was what I posted. I am very seriously thinking of ordering that medium contour barrel, I'm not happy with the way my rifle is shooting now. I received a reply quickly and they seem easy to deal with, but I haven't actually bought anything from them.

I just got mine, it is a nice catalog. Easier to use since there is nothing but AR stuff in it. -
New charging handle in town - Mecharmor Defense Systems "TacOps-1"
SWshooter replied to imschur's topic in .308AR Parts
I put a Badger tactical latch on mine and was having trouble with using it one handed, it wanted to bind. I polished the whole length of the body and it runs much better now. I have bad rotator cuffs in both shoulders and know how you feel. -
I emailed Lothar-Walther and thought their prices were pretty good. I asked if they would make a light weight barrel and this was their reply: Dennis, This barrel is done as a custom. $399 + shipping. You would need to provide a bolt and extension from DPMS. It can be made exactly like you want. We have another barrel that is cheaper. However, it is not exactly as you want it. 0.875 gas block. with Muzzle thread. 20" long. $360 and has a bolt and extension. So, this is a $100 savings. Woody Woodall I haven't used one of their barrels before but I have heard nothing but good about them.

I was at show this weekend and picked up some mags for my HK 91. They were only $5 apiece. I found two other places online that had them for $3 apiece. I wonder if anyone makes a lower that uses G3 mags and is compatible with a DPMS upper. You could save enough on a dozen mags to pay for the lower, with DPMS wanting $50 a pop for mags. It would also be really handy if the HK and LR-308 could use the same mags.

DPMS LR-308 Trigger Options
SWshooter replied to draco41's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
I've got a 2# JP in mine now and it is definitely too light for a field trigger. I think I'm going to order a 3 and a 4 lb trigger spring. I shot it yesterday and didn't get a bump fire, but I was very careful to pull it in tight to my shoulder. A couple days before I was shooting groups and twice it bump fired. It is annoying and certainly ruins a good group. You definitely don't want to cover the trigger until the sights are on target. I was shooting my HK 91 at the same time and it has quite a heavy pull, it really makes you pay attention when switching guns. -
I shot six five shot groups with two types of ammo. They all went between 1 1/4 to 2". I'm going to load some 168 match bullets tonight and shoot it again tomorrow. The barrel nut couldn't have been much tighter than 35 ft lb, it came loose with very little effort. I had to loosen and tighten it a couple times to get a hole to line up at what I thought was tight enough to prevent the barrel from moving. It had some kind of red grease or anti-seize on the barrel threads so I left it there. I wrapped a layer of cardboard around the float tube and tightened it with a chain wrench, it's tight now <thumbsup>
-
Does anyone have any info on how tight a barrel nut should be, or any way to tune for accuracy? I pulled the barrel off my LR-308 and thought it was quite loose. I reinstalled it and gained two holes in the float tube barrel nut. I had this barrel recontoured by ADCO and haven't been happy with the accuracy. I'll try and shoot it tomorrow, if the rain stops.

Cutting Barrel Down question
SWshooter replied to MNellis3023's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Personally, I think 16" is a little short for a 308 for anything. I have a 24" on my rifle and I may cut it back to 20" but don't think I'd go any shorter. I had my barrel turned down to a thinner profile, rather than cut shorter. -
I posted a pic of a 1022M with a 17HMR barrel and a Hogue stock under the gen disc show me your benchrest topic. If youwant better pics let me know and I'll take some.

Never sell a die set, it is a guarantee you'll need it again some day.
-
They rattle around an awful lot though, if they're not in individual pockets. They also get mixed up if you keep different types of ammo clipped.

You can't have too many bags in too many sizes. The plastic pellets sound good if they're not too hard. Ideally the bag should be firm but resilient. Lead shot is too hard, fine white sand is better. Whatever Caldwell uses is very good, I never opened one up to find out what they use.
