Recoil is subjective, it depends on what you are used to. A 338 Fed has a little more recoil than a 30-06. With a little practice anyone should be able to shoot it without a problem. Of course, if you think a 30-06 is a real shoulder destroyer, you probably ought to stick to air-soft and BB guns.

Well I had my right shoulder rebuilt last august and my left shoulder rebuilt this sept. My training goal is to be able to pick up a rifle and hold it long enough to squeeze off a shot. <dontknow> I shot a little bullseye a couple weeks ago and I didn't embarass myself too badly. So I guess the right shoulder is doing ok. <thumbsup>

8 grains of Unique is a great load for a cast 240. I've gone up to 10, but that is a pretty stiff load and starting to show pressure signs. H-110 is my favorite magnum powder for 357, 41, and44 mags.

I've been using HSBC since they bought out the local chain, and contrary to my expectations, they have been entirely satisfactory.

Pic Rail/handguard question...
SWshooter replied to GSPKurt's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
If it's the standard DPMS two piece, you would be better off with a new 3 piece unit. The DPMS will get out of alignment if you have to remove it for any reason. -
Repeat after me, "this is my weapon, this is my gun, this one's for fighting , this one's for fun." I CAN'T HEAR YOU !!!

Yes, there is usually a conflict between what you like and what you actually carry. Duty guns are usually dictated by the agency and CCW by practicality.A fellow once asked me why I carried the 39 instead of the Glock 19, I told him because I can carry anything I want to now, and if I want to carry blued steel and walnut I can. I carry the S&W 19 once in a while just because it is such a beautiful handgun. I just have a real fondness for S&W revolvers. The first revolver I ever shot was a Smith 357, and the first handgun I ever bought was a Smith 27 357 mag. I told a young fellow a while back, I don't have enough time left to waste it carrying an ugly gun. Unfortunately I usually end up carrying a single stack 9 or 380 just for the convenience and comfort.

Problem with the really well known custom smiths is the turn around time. You send them a gun and you might as well pretend you sold it, then when it comes back it's like an unexpected Christmas present. The last custom work I had done on a rifle, the smith promised it would be done in 6 weeks, I got it back almost a year to the day I sent it. I try to have my work done within driving distance of home, then you can check on it once in a while and make sure it isn't covered with dust in a corner. The best work I had done was the S&W factory. I sent them the gun and they sent back a quote. I had questions and called, and the girl asked if I wanted to talk to the gunsmith working on it. He actually disassembled part of the gun while I was on the phone, and we both knew exactly what was to be done when I hung up. I got it back in about a month and it was just the way I wanted it. They do really good work on old revolvers, especially refinishing. Of course they only work on Smith's.

This is a great discussion. I really like Hi-Powers, they are very ergonomic. I had a really nice commercial model about 72, 73. I carried it a lot and soon found out that for the size and weight of the gun it fired a puny cartridge. I went to a 5" 1911 for the bigger round, but it was still too heavy. I ended up with a Glock 17 because of the weight and the round count. When the 20's came out, I carried one for a while, but still too heavy. After many permutations I'm back to the 9mm for concealed carry. with today's ammo the lethality is much better than it used to be and there are some really compact 9mm's available now. I carried a S&W 39-2 for years and recently switched to a S&W 3914, the 39-2 is getting to be a collectors gun, and the 3914 is smaller and lighter and has the same round count. I also have a Glock 19 with a Lasermax that is my really serious 9mm handgun and a Kel-Tec PM-11 that is a throw away if I feel the need to carry out of state. I've also been known to carry a 2 1/2" 66, 4" 19, 4" 629 and a few other revolvers, but thats another discussion. Back to Hi-Powers, now that they are available in 40S&W , I wouldn't mind having one again.

No one's posted here for a while so I thought I'd start something. Who is your favorite source for parts and/or who is your favorite pistol smith. I'm having a Delta Gold Cup completely rebuilt with a fully ramped barrel, new trigger, bobtailed frame and an extra 40 S&W barrel fitted for cheap practice ammo use. I picked up the 10mm and 40 S&W barrels, trigger parts, and bobtail mainspring housing from Bob Serva at Fusion Firearms. I used him because he does a lot of 10mm work, and 10mm parts can be hard to find. Picked up a few specialty tools from Brownells. I'm using a gunsmith by the name of Don Gabor, first work he's done for me. One of my buddies had him do a trigger job on a Browning Hi-Power and he did a really nice job. Hi-Power's are notoriously hard to put a good trigger pull on. Should get it back in a couple of weeks and I'll try to post some pics.

Now there is some truly worthwhile information, my attitude toward the BATF has now undergone a complete 180 degree reversal. I feel so much safer. -

Maybe this year Santa could bring you a really cool flash suppressor, or maybe an extended charging handle latch. You could develop a whole new fixation. -

A tactical/practical rifle sling - for the economic minded
SWshooter replied to KS Shooter's topic in General Discussion
The best all-around cheap sling I've used is the Uncle Mikes black nylon conventional sling. The older ones with the steel hardware are better. They are light weight and virtually indestructible. Anything more complicated and I end up modifying it anyway. I would try a couple different styles, then you'll have enough raw material on hand to build one to suit you. Nothing more fun than sitting in front of the TV rigging and rerigging a sling, swivels, buckles, sliders, frogs, keepers, duct tape, black electricians tape, leather awl, etc etc etc ... -

Don't worry too much, your rifle should serve you well for many years. It's those guys who just can't leave well enough alone (you know who you are) and try to turn a gas tube roll pin into a complete rifle, that have the problems. Welcome to the forum. -
I think I can safely speak for the majority of 308AR owners here and state that whatever you spend on your first 308AR won't be the last.

I had the Armor Officers Basic Course, the Cav course, Junior Motor Officers Course, and the Armor Officers Advanced course. I also did the Tank Commanders Course at Gowen Field in Boise Idaho, which was probably the toughest tank course I took. It was three weeks long and concentrated purely on understanding the turret mechanics of the ballistic system and pure gunnery. Final test was a company (14 M60a3's) sized live ammo battle run. Only one I've ever been in. Not too many places have range facilities that can handle 14 tanks online with live main gun ammo (105mm).
