  1. I have this mag release on an AR-15 and find that the BAD lever blocks it somewhat. It's still possible to accuate but you don't have access to the back edge of the mag release so it's harder to hit it quickly, or so I have found in my experience. Might not be an issue on a .308
  2. Welcome to the forum wilky, First off, what I say is based on my experience and others may give you different opinions. I would tell you that if your interested in getting into a .308 AR by the least expensive route, I'd advise you to look for a new or used Armalite or DPMS rifle. Unlike the AR 15's were you may be able to build one cheaper than you can buy (debatable), the .308 platform AR components don't seem to be as reasonably priced. The main reasons to build vs buy, is to get a configuration that's commercially unavailable instead of buying a gun and swapping out parts, or for the satisfaction of building your own gun. I would guess for a hunting AR you'd want an 18-20" barrel and you probably don't need an expensive railed handguard. beyond that, the stock you go with would be a matter of personal preference and local regs, (not a problem in Utah I'm guessing) Good luck. The members here will be happy to help you spend your money.
  3. Although I have yet to experiment with the CWS (only so much time to play, I mean test new things) I have installed Clint''s extra heavy car buffers in both my Mega and my Kaiser .308. Now, I realize that all this is subjective, but when I shoot my .308 AR's and then try friends .308's I think mine seem as though they have less Felt recoil. I realize that the guns are all configured differently, so some of it may be weight or muzzle device related, but I choose to believe that the heavier buffers are at least partially involved. When I get a chance, I plan to buy one of those lighter weight buffers of the same size as my CAR buffer, and do a range session to see if I can actually tell the difference when I switch out the XH for a standard weight (which is around 3 oz lighter)

yeah, the picture resizing gave me trouble, The original pics I tried to post were only slightly over 500 KB.

I picked this up last week. I'm still noy quite sure why. Probably to get my friends to stop bugging me about not owning a pump, that and the box mag. I was planning to use it to kick their asses in pump division until I found out that I'd be put in open because of the box mag and would have to shoot against the Saiga's. Oh well, it looks like it ought to make a decent home defense gun for the wife.
  6. Only problem is that it only makes sense in a gun where you hand load the shells, I don't think I'd want to try it with a semi or a pump.
  7. I installed a low mass bolt carrier (not JP's I used the Young's super lite) in my 300. It is my understanding that the idea is to have the minimum weight moving back and forth so as to disrupt the shooters sight picture less for faster follow up shots. As Imschur stated, your supposed to use an adjustable GB and tune the gas impulse so as to use just enough gas to cycle the action , and it should be understood that with the lighter BCG weight along with the reduced gas impulse, a gun so equipped may possibly be more sensitive to fouling and would not be an ideal choice for a defensive or combat application. In fact JP sells an extra power buffer spring (+7%) for the very purpose of helping the lighter BCG to strip and chamber the round. I think that this is more competition directed than real world intended. I'm still trying to learn about this but the Tubbs CWS , and the Xheavy buffer that many people use to slow or delay the bolt unlocking or rearwad travel of the bolt/bcg, and that many people claim gives them less perceived recoil, I think are more useful on a gun without an adjustable gas system which may be oergassed,if the gun is intended for tactical purposes.
  8. Sounds similar to Harley's buyback from AMF. I hope they do well.
  9. Looks like it wood make a real nice foundation for a new build. Have you heard any updates on when it might actually hit the market?
  10. Yeah, what he said. After all, it's only money. And then, after you get it and post good pics, I can decide if I want one of those handguards. The designer told me that the rails are actually molded from a different type of CF, so as to be stronger and stand up to having things clamped to them. He told me that if I ever held one in my hand, I'd definitely buy it. So I think you should go for it. (and don't forget the pictures)
  11. I don't think I'm ready for the deep end of the pool just yet. I would like to build that 45 ACP AR if funds allow, and I "think" I might possibly even be able to afford to feed that one.
  12. and vehicle mounted as well, But if you can afford to buy it and feed it, a helicopter shouldn't be a big deal, nor the desert land to set up junk cars on to shoot at like on that episode of future weapons.
  13. Yeah, and you'd have to deal with fuel for the requisite helicopter that goes with it besides.
  14. Edgecrusher, Almost all the collapsible stocks can be pinned or fixed in some fashion in order to be compliant in most states, (don't know about Mass) The BAD lever fits the MA Ten with a little clearanceing (I know for sure) may fit some of the other .308's with trimming. The Phase 5 Tactical ,although a bit ostentatious for my taste,is supposed to fit the DPMS .308's or so the MFG states. http://www.phase5tactical.com/products/ar15-m16/ebrv2-
  15. WOW!!!!! That is impressive. I can't even imagine feeding that thing, I have trouble keeping up with my "little" guns as it is. Good luck with it. By the way Have you ever considered a Dillon Aero?

Don't worry, I won't be looking at the work area just the gun. I find that when I take an interest in a new (to me) firearm, it helps me to develop a general idea of visually what type of gun I want to go with , by looking at as many diffirent pictures of all of the varients, before I actually get serious about starting a build.
  17. Impressive gun man, good luck with it. Can you tell me how you like the 6.8 SPC? What mags have you used? How many rds do they hold? How does it run? Any chrono or perfomance data? I see you've got risers under the BUIS, is that to cowitness an optic? Oh, and I almost forgot, I gotta get me one of those Demon Tac pins.
  18. So Imschur, are you going to be the first one to build a bolt gun on this, or do you plan to apply peer pressure on 98Z5V to do it?.

I was not aware of the Smith Enterprises receivers but will check them out, thanks. I did look online at the LRB, which seem to have a good reputation, besides being located about 15 minutes away from me? I see that their receivers are hammer forged and they also have a very unique dovetail setup machined into the top of one of their receivers that takes a picatinny rail (included) which is a very solid and also low mount for an optic (which I plan to use instead of iron sights) I see that the M1A receivers are available with and without the rear lug. The consensus seems to be that the rear lug makes for a more solid receiver/stock interface if glass bedding, but certain stocks don't accept the rear lug receivers, the Sage being one. I think that I would like to go with the JAE, which at this point I'm not sure of as far as rear lug compatibility goes. Do you think I'd be giving up a lot in the accuracy department by going with a non glass bedded stock, specifically the JAE? I also don't see any one bolt that seems to be "THE" preferred one. I see guys talking about the TRW mfg'd bolts but they are not available so you would have to come across a NOS. I see that Clint at Fulton has pretty much anything I need, and as 98Z5V mentioned, they have a very good rep when it comes to the M1A's. I'm thinking of this as something that I would shoot off the bench using a bipod, so weight is not a consideration here, accuracy and ergonomics are my two main considerations. and since I'm not a purist, I have no issues with using aftermarket vs USGI parts. I would just want to use the best parts available, and not cut any corners, so as to end up with the most accurate M1A possible. Not to be a nag, but how about showing a picture of yours?

JMOTO, After a description like that you don't even post a picture? I think your teasing me. I have been told that the LRB receivers are of high quality, do you know anything pro or con about them? Could you tell me who's receiver you built on? I see that Krieger does a lot of work on them as well, and I really like the Kreiger barrels. I did an online search and see reports that it's possible to tune one of these triggers down to below 2 lbs, but that due to the design, a 3 lb M1A trigger feels more like a 2 lb AR trigger. I think I must be getting restless because I don't presently have any new gun builds going on . the other option would be for me to build a dedicated benchrest .308 AR, which would probably be 10 X easier, but less fun than exploring a new platform. I hear that it's harder to get extreme accuracy from the M1A because the barrel is non free float. Can you tell me how well your gun groups with it's favorite load?

Can you tell me how yours is configured? What barrel length. What things you like or would like to change? Do you know if there are aftermarket triggers available, and if so which are most highly regarded? If I were to get one I'd plan to mount a scope, so I also need to investigate rail/mount options.

another thing I was wondering about, The one thing I didn't like about the gun I tried today was the trigger, Every single AR I have has a better trigger. do you guys know if I can buy a trigger for one of these the way we do for the AR's?
  24. Based on your extremely positive reports on it, I'm expecting to be impressed. It's actually for the dedicated lower I'm assembling for my 300BLK build. as soon as I have the trigger and some new loads made up to test I'll get back out to try it and will report my experience.

I also see that JAE has a nice looking stock (not exaxtly pistol grip but tactical) that you can order ala cart so you only oder the features/rails you want. I'm going to have to do some studying of this platform, and see if any other members in my club have them, so maybe I can get some more trigger time. Thanks for the input. http://www.jallenenterprises.com/customer_pictures.htm
