Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight 300 WSM SS
MikedaddyH replied to MikedaddyH's topic in Rifles
Replaced the cheap Simmons scope with a low priced NC Star scope with a lighted reticle ( 3-9 x 40 E), scope matches the SS parts. -
My 6.8spcII 24" stainless steel McGowen match barrel is done. I only took 9 1/2 months, so you could say it my new baby. I still need to put a gas block on it, been waiting for 2 weeks for that part. I'll have to machine it to 0.951" so it will fit on that fat barrel. I have a Young mfg quad rail, Aero upper receiver and a Pri Quiet Brake I'll put on it. Not sure if I will put a Plum Crazy or AGP lower on it. Mike H

Does anyone on this forum have any Hornady Superformance ammo they could open up one round and get a weight of the powder? I would like to make a few rounds to test, starting at 42.0 gr and working up a grain at a time. It appears the 155 ,165 & 168 gr bullets work well with this powder. THX Mike H

Ok, I made up 30 rounds of Superformance 5 each with 69.0 grains (68.9 to 69.1) for the 300 WSM. I haven't that powder but I bought a pound of Superformance. Going to try it out on some 300 wsm loads. Picked up some 165gr and 168gr bullits for the 308 and 300wsm guns.Mike H

The firearm is not required to be shipped overnight. The firearm company may require all of their shipments to and from their facility to be shipped overnight because of their tracking ability. All of the firearms shipped FedEx and UPS have tracking numbers and require a signature to be released. This was the result of a gun which was left on a porch , stolen and use to commit a murder. Hi, I am doing a 270 wsm and 300 wsm AR project. I have a Win 70 barrel which has been machined, threaded barrel extension installed. Its looks great and would be ready to shoot but, only in a single fire shooting scenario. There is more metal around the bolt head than a bolt action rifle but the rifle barrel is to thin to sustain rapid firing. I have discussed this with 3 gunsmiths and 2 told me not to use the barrel. I have 2 barrel blanks that will be machined to an AR barrel profile, this will/should increase the strength. I have 2 rifles complete minus the barrels. Just want to stress the safety factor , magnum rifle cases can have 60 to 78 grains of powder exploding inches from your face! That Rem 700 barrel may not be the answer , yes it will work but more metal will be better. I looked at a Armalite 300SAUM AR and this was the gun which gave me my inspiration. Camo'ed out with a 10 round mag. Mike H

Replaced the front base mount for the scope. I had two Weaver 47's but needed a Weaver 46 on the front, should have done the research first. Well its fixed and I'm ready to shoot it again. Made up 250 plus rounds of ammo. 100 gr. 110 gr. 125 gr. 150gr. 165gr. 170gr. 180gr. and 200gr bullets. <thumbsup> Mike H -

Weight or Wait. The 16" DPMS not a problem , 20" would not want to carry it all day. 24" Bull barrel ,yes their is a problem if your standing up and shooting like a man you had better shoot in under 20 seconds or things may get a little shakey. Thinking about pumping some weights so I can shoot more. <laughs> Wait: Now this has been an issue for me. Back ordered parts or delays by manufactures. Mike H

No ,2 rounds with the stock set up then I took a Limbsaver buttpad off of one of the 308's to chushin' the blow.Thinking about putting on a muzzle brake. I really like my PRI Quiet ...brake. Mike H -
Took this beauty out yesterday for the first time and put 8 rounds through it. Kicks like a donkey ! I put a cheap scope on it [ 3-9 x40 ] doesn't do it justice . I need to sight in the scope still. Was shooting at a box 700 yards away ,hitting low by 1 to 4 feet. Very impressed with it ! Need a large buttpad for it before I shoot again. Mike H

I agree , was told by a friend who makes ar lowers that the bolt may only last a 1000 rounds. I had a 270 win back in the early 80's ,loved that gun had to sell it when i left WA. Mike H

The 27cal (.277) have a lot of good hunting projectiles and with the 6.8spc there are fragible and barrier penetrating bullets. A wide selection from 85gr to 170gr and above. I haven't seen any incendiary or tracer rounds in this caliber. But a small projectile going 3400 to 3700fps will do a lot of damage. An example would be the Nosler Accubond 110gr going 2700fps and destroying 2ltr bottles at 300 yards.out of my 6.8. Mike H

Ben Avery isn't very fun a little on the strict side , they dont like certain large caliber rifles. I've been going to Rio Salado at Usery Pass , nicer more friendly enviroment. Mike H
