  1. The reason I mentioned the Anti-Seize was because I've always had good luck with it sealing the threads on header bolts that go into the water jacket on engines, not so much because of it's anti- seize properties.
  2. Try some Permatex Anti-Seize on the threads first and see if that solves the problem.
  3. JM, I wish your son well. Mine will be taking those same steps in a few months and it will be a hard thing for me but I know that his honor and integrity will carry him through, as will your son's.
  4. They won't do anything unless it's a case of not receiving the item or something like that. They consider my problem something to be settled between the seller and buyer. I just got another email from him about 30 minutes ago with more of his juvenile BS! I filed it away with the others. I quit responding to him a few emails back.
  5. Don't know if this is the right forum, but thought I'd give you guys a heads up on a bad deal I got on Gunbroker.com. Seller's username is 'rookejas83' from Hillsboro, Ks. I bought a quadrail gas block and clamp on front sight from him and when I got them the gas block was a tall one and the sight was one made for the short gas block. Needless to say, they won't work together and when I emailed him back and described the problem he told me I didn't know what I was talking about and refused to discuss any kind of remediation. I emailed him back and politely explained my background as an armorer for my department and that I was quite familiar with the AR platform. He then fired off 3 emails in a row to me claiming I was threatening him and accusing me of being a 18 year old kid that didn't know anything and calling me a liar. I do have the emails as proof of this seller's actions. At any rate, I would hate for anyone here to have to deal with this guy!
  6. ?? <dontknow>
  7. Rene, glad you're okay. I grew up in Kansas and am very familiar with what a tornado can do.
  8. Yup, it's getting so you can't throw a rock around Alamagordo or Las Cruces without hitting someone. Sheesh, it's even getting to be that way here in little ol' Deming. We had a boom here shortly before the housing market crashed, a lot of folks from California moved to this area. Can't say as I blame them!
  9. Deming New Mexico, down in the southwest corner of the state. The wind blows like that all through the spring here, hence the comment about getting a calm day to shoot around June! :P
  10. Dusty, I read Hoot's writeup and that is something to keep in mind. The first thing I'm going to do is back off from 21 grs. of 4198 to 20 grs. and see what happens there. It'll take me less time to knock out 20 rounds on the Dillon than it does to drive to the range. Got a USPSA match in the morning in Las Cruces so it'll probably be Sunday before I get a chance to do anything with the rifle.
  11. Boy did you just open a can of worms! <munch>
  12. You're skating on thin ice there Matt! :cookoo:
  13. I've been packing this bad boy for over 15 years, hence the 'scruffy' look! Colt 1991-A1 Compact in 45 ACP I bought new. Mods; checkered the frontstrap 30 LPI opened the trigger slot up for a Gold Cup width trigger Ed Brown beavertail grip safety Wilson hammer and sear tuned to a slick 4# pull Wilson full length guide rod kit & barrel bushing Wilson extended thumb safety MMC low profile fixed sights (these were a prototype set the owner of MMC, Bob Sconce, gave me shortly before his son took over the business) Beveled mag well Black-T finish I did all the work myself except for the Black-T finish. That finish is some amazing stuff, self-lubricating corrosion resistant as hell! When I clean it I put one drop of oil on each slide rail and that's it for lube. As I said, I've been carrying it concealed for over 15 years here in the desert and it has never shown any signs of rust. Beware the man who carries only one gun, he probably shoots it very well!
  14. Unforgiven, you need to lay off that popcorn, stuff will give you nasty gas! <laughs>
  15. Well, finally got a target to post up on the LR308B. Shot this one today, 14 shots prone @ 100 yards with wind gusts up to 40 MPH from my 7-8 o'clock. Ammo was Tula 150 gr. from Wal Mart, and scope is zeroed for 2" high at 100 yrds. I didn't think it was too bad for the conditions and the cheap ammo. I'll try it again with some good ammo when the wind dies down around here, probably around June! :P
  16. Well, you guys hit the nail on the head, bolt is moving too fast. I tried the one round in the mag 3 times and the bolt locked back every time. Put a clipful of factory stuff through it with no problems then tried a mag with reloads. About the fourth time it failed to chamber a round the round was partway up the feedramp with the bolt stopped on top of the round. Next step is to back off on the powder charge and see what happens. Thanks for the assistance guys! <thumbsup>
  17. As for the front sight/gas blocks that mount with tapered pins, I've done one by hand filing, but it takes patience and attention to detail. I filed the grooves by hand with a round chainsaw sharpening type file, which is a straight file, not tapered like a rat tail file. It involved quite a bit of installing and removing the gas block to check progress and I wouldn't recommend someone doing it who doesn't have experience in hand fitting gun parts as it could be easy to screw it up and get the sight misaligned. I've been building competition grade 1911's and doing hand checkering on them for years so it wasn't too much of a chore for me to do. If the issue comes up again though, I will probably just do as others have suggested here and get a clamp on sight/gas block.
  18. Kind of like the piston rings seating in a newly rebuilt engine.
  19. I'm confused here, wouldn't a larger gas port aggravate the problem?
  20. BTW, we have tried his rifle with the A2 stock and a carbine stock with the same results with the reloads. It doesn't seem to be a recoil spring or buffer problem.
  21. In the friend's gun we tried it with his and our mags, same thing. My son tried some Winchester 55 gr. FMJ's and he said they functioned fine. We also tried G.I. and Magpul mags, no difference. I'll have him try the one round in the mag and see what happens.
  22. My son bought a DelTon AR-15 from an individual over on brianenos.com and the seller said the gun ran great. We have been shooting my reloads in it (55 gr. FMJ over 21.0 grs. of IMR 4198) and it seems to be shortstroking as it doesn't pick up the next round from the magazine. We tried some of the rounds in a friends AR this last weekend with the same result. Funny thing is, I've been shooting this load in my DPMS carbine with no problems at all. My son's rifle and the other one we tried were 20" barrel guns. The load is pretty close to a max load according to my data so it kind of has me scratching my head why it would shortstroke in these guns. Should I try a faster or slower powder, or maybe try a little more of the 4198? I'm not getting any signs of high pressure with this load. What do you guys think? <dontknow>
  23. A friend of mine has had one of the Sterling models since the early eighties. It is a great gun and a lot of fun to shoot. The author of the article stated that AR15/M16 mags are easy to convert, which is correct. That little slot on the right side of the mag that you see in the pictures is all you have to do to convert a mag. My friend made a stencil out of a piece of sheetmetal, and you could lay it on an AR15 mag and scribe a mark, then cut the slot with a dremel tool. Took all of a couple of minutes to modify a mag!
