  1. Unforgiven, sorry to hear your bro is being hassled like that! Arizona has been up in arms for quite a while now about illegal immigrants (started back when that rancher was killed down south by illegals) and some good people are catching the fallout! I don't know what part of the country you're in, but life on the border has changed drastically in the last 10 years and the news media, for whatever reason, has ignored the problem. I live 30 miles from the border here in New Mexico and can state with certainty that Mexican drug cartel violence is crossing over our borders! A LOT of whats going on down here isn't making the news or is severely downplayed, so most folks don't realize how big of a problem we have. I don't have my AR's and lots of ammo just for plinking and I never leave the city limits without a gun anymore. I'm not an alarmist, nor am I paranoid but the border situation has got me and a lot of other people worried. Some Arizona LEO's may be getting out of hand with the immigration status checks, especially in Maricopa County, but my wife (who is Cuban) has never been bothered in Arizona.
  2. Well, I didn't really do it for the money! It's all good! :)
  3. Unforgiven, I don't think you addressed any posts towards me but at any rate Nobody here has offended me and hopefully I haven't offended anyone. This has been a great discussion and it's pretty cool to be on a forum where something like this can take place without folks loosing their temper! Great bunch of shooters here! <thumbsup>
  4. MaDuce, the City Administrator's position here isn't a political position, it's appointed by the city council, who is elected. Problem is, once someone is appointed to that position they usually stay there until they retire which fortunately that a**hole has! Also, any money taken in from law enforcement activities by our PD goes into the city's general fund, not the PD budget, which basically takes some burden off the taxpayers and also takes away the financial motivation you referred to. I think it is that way throughout New Mexico.
  5. I'll second that! An aftermarket trigger will be the first upgrade I do on my LR-308 I just got.
  6. I would like to touch upon the subject of unions since it was brought up. When I started at my PD in 1980 I made just a little over $6.00 an hour. We got a cost of living increase most years that was then eaten up by an increase in our health insurance and felt we were lucky if the increase was not enough that our take home pay went DOWN. The only real raises we got were our step increases, which were raises based on employment longevity. A few years after I started, the State of New Mexico passed a collective bargaining law which allowed state, county, and city employees to form a collective bargaining association, what most would call a union. When we served notice to our city council that we were forming a collective bargaining association within our dept. (NO outside entities involved!) our City Administrator threw a fit and wanted to disband the PD. His solution was to put over 30 people out of work, hire private security to patrol the town (approx. population of 12,000) and let the Sheriff's Dept. handle criminal matters. This was how little regard the head of the city had for the police dept. Fortunately, New Mexico has a law that a town of our size has to have a PD. Our collective bargaining association made some gains and when I retired in 2002 my retirement, which is a percentage of your highest paid 3 years of your career times years served, was at it's max. At the time I retired as a Lieutenant I made about $17.00 an hour. Now that's a lot of bank for putting your butt out on the street day in and day out for 22 years and missing birthdays, holidays, etc. with your family! Yep, our union really raped the taxpayers! As for the pension that I paid into for over 22 years, yes it's a state run system but is totally self sustaining. The monies paid by employees are invested and fund the pensions of retirees. NO taxes are used to fund our pensions and we actually had to go to the polls and vote in an amendment to our state constitution making it impossible for our state legislators to have access to our pension funds! The general voting population passed that amendment by a huge margin because we made sure they knew that none of their tax dollars were used to fund our pensions. It is my understanding that a many states' public employee pensions are based on the same system we use here in New Mexico and are self funded. BTW, my pension has a cost of living increase every year too, and just like back when I was a cop, my insurance rates keep going up. I've been retired for almost 10 years now and my monthly retirement checks are about $50 more than the ones I got when I first retired in 2002! Fortunately, I put my wife through nursing school and as an RN she brings home twice as much as I did as a cop. I recently checked with an officer at the PD who is at the level I was when I retired and found that my wife still makes about 30% more than he does! Yep, our union really put it to the taxpayers! Sorry for the long post, but it just rubs me the wrong way when someone starts carrying on about something that they haven't researched and really have no idea what they are talking about. I'll get off my soapbox now. Let the flaming commence! ::)
  7. I'm new to the AR-10 worlds so have some patience with me. What is the deal with "T's"? :-[
  8. Well, I have to say that both of the above posts put a negative spin on this deal. Wouldn't it be much better to have the opinion that anything a LEO can own should be available to any citizen too? Just sayin................. <munch>
  9. Being a 22 year veteran of law enforcement, I have always said 'I will support the U.S. Constitution in lieu of enforcing ANY law that is in conflict with said Constitution!' Here in New Mexico any law abiding U.S. citizen can own any firearm that any LEO can own and it should be that way in every state. Kalifornia has being violating Constitutional rights for a long time (along with Chicago and Washington D.C.). I have friends who are cops out there that can't wait to retire and get the heck out of that state!
  10. Retired JM thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't thought of that! My son is griping that the rifle needs a better scope than the generic 3X9 I put on it so around Father's Day I'll tell him "Well, you said...." I got 4 20 rnd. boxes of ammo so that's a start on the ammo! 98Z5V, I'm working on the pics, I don't want to get called out right after getting here! <lmao> I tried to post something a couple of days ago but I kept getting a message the files were too big. I have to take some more pics at low resolution I guess. Right now I have to go take some family portrait pics of my older son's family, ever since I got this Nikon D50 everyone thinks I'm some kind of pro photog or something! <dontknow>
  11. Sheepdog here for sure. 22 years in law enforcement and retired from the PD now for 10 years. I'm now to the point where I feel like getting back into the thick of things and considering running for Municipal Judge next year. I can't take this standing on the sidelines any more. I've got a son and son-in-law guarding our southern borders in New Mexico and Arizona, my youngest is going in the Marines in a few months and it's time for the old man to get back in the fight!
  12. Chocolate chip cookies are my Waterloo, can't turn them down. That's a wonderful memory! I created one yesterday I'll remember for a long time. An old friend of mine who is now retired from the gunsmithing business lost his 92 year old mom who he took care of some time back, and since he closed the shop friends got kind of scarce. My wife bakes banana bread and pumpkin bread for the holidays so I took some out to him since he has no family. I was just going to drop it off, but he actually started crying when I gave him the bread, and I ended up staying and visiting with him for 3 hours! I had a great time just sitting and chatting with him!
  13. Yep, they're both pretty special. My wife used to shoot some USPSA Open Div. but doesn't shoot much anymore. My son shoots USPSA with me but I need to get him out to the range and tuned up with the AR-15 as he's going into the Marines in a few months.
  14. I'm not sure about the sights yet. Right now I've got a generic (I don't even know who made it) 3X9 rubber armored scope on it that was on my DPMS AR-15 when I got it back years ago. The scope was laying up on the shelf in the reloading room so I slapped it on there.
  15. It's official, I am now among the ranks of AR-308 owners. My wife and son got me a DPMS LR-308B for Christmas! YEEHAW!!!!

  17. I look at these guns the same as I do muscle cars. It's your's and what others prefer doesn't matter as much as what YOU prefer. Set it up the way that makes you happy and to heck with everyone else. You're the one who is operating it and possibly staking your life on it's functionality.
  18. Thanks for the link! I just printed it out for my 19 year old son. He just bought his first AR-15 a couple of months ago and is going into the Marines in a few months. I'm sure this will give him a head start on his rifle marksmanship!
  19. I didn't spend much time in the office, I actually turned down the Capt. position twice so I could stay out on the street! C:-) Thanks for the welcome! I'm looking forward to burning some .308. I've had several ar-15s, but this will be my first gun on the AR-10 platform.
  20. I checked my pics, but apparently I deleted them all because I couldn't find any! At one time I had 3 of those engines, but sold the last one (which was in my 70 Cuda) about a year ago to a friend of mine who put it in an early 30's Dodge sedan hotrod. My Cuda now has a Gen. III 5.7 Hemi in it. I have a 354 Hemi in my storage unit that my son rebuilt to put in a Studebaker pickup he has. Those 1st. generation hemis are great engines!
  21. I've been dealing with Brownells for years. Their customer service is great, and from experience I would say that they have about 99% of their cataloged items in stock. Glad to see them adding more AR 308 stuff since I'm just getting into that platform.
  22. New to the board here. I'm a retired Lieutenant with the Deming, NM Police Dept. 22 years of service and now taking it easy and collecting those monthly checks. I have a DPMS LR-308B on the way and looking forward to shooting it! I've already gotten a lot of good info from posts here on the board. Great forum!
