Well, there does seem to be somewhat of a consensus with the recent offerings from Seekins and Daniel Defense, in terms of a standard with respect to the receiver and bolt carrier being LR-308 dimensions. I noticed that Toolcraft and Young don't offer a dual ejector bolt at least to retail non-OEM clients. I would imagine that the DPMS Gen2 receiver and BCG patterns would have been used by at least a few other OEM's if not for the Intellectual Property Rights claimed by Freedom Group.

I'm just not going to go down that whole bolt gun bench rest F class rabbit hole. I just can't see myself all obsessed about case neck concentricity, runout, and tension. Weighing then segregating each case and bullet and getting all spun up about 1/4 grain of powder. In my mind, that takes all the fun out of it - I'd rather just shoot. At my gun club, they're like divas the way they sashay around. Having said that, I do plan on qualifying on the 600 yard line at my club with my .308 AR just to annoy the poop out of them.

I would personally stay away from the .243 - that's a lot of high velocity gas and powder being pushed down a little hole - barrel erosion and longevity is a known issue for the .243. Some guy over on the 6BR forum stated that he gets around 1500 rounds out of a .243 barrel. Personally, I'd be all over the 6.5 Creedmore if I were to buy a RPR.

My DPMS Gen2 Recon pimped out 3-gun style with a Geisselle trigger. Since this pic was taken I added a PRI GasBuster extended latch charging handle, which is specific to the Gen2 - makes charging easier with the scope. I've also moved from the Leupold VX-6 1-6 Ballistic Firedot scope to the VX-R 4-12x50 Ballistic Firedot as I've starting shooting at longer distances.

1. I wanted to shoot an AR in a caliber that would knock something the hell down. A caliber designed originally as a Varmint round I was not interested in. 2. I was and am very wary and iffy about the alternative calibers being floated about... 6.5, 6.8, 300 AAC, 7.62x39, 457socom, 50 Beowulf, etc. etc. 3. The .308 / 7.62x51 has decades of commercial civilian and military NATO use and support in terms of ammunition, reloading, etc.. And it is a proven and established caliber whose knock-down power is settled science. .308 is also known to be relatively easy on barrels.

I haven't seen any CBC around Illinois or the mid-south. I recall using bulk lots of Lake City M80 ball - and buying on many occasions 20 round boxes of Hornady TAP, Federal Gold Metal Match, Hornady Superformance, Federal Fusion... I've really gotten into reloading the past year - in .308 the economics are really compelling. I can reload 150 gr Hornady FMJBT for ~ 25cents/round, and 168gr AMAX for ~ 30cents/round using Lake City brass that I prep.

The Gen2 FF barrel nut's exterior threads fits the ID threads for just about anyone's AR free float rail. Since my Gen2 Recon came stock with a FF Quad Rail, all I did was heat the rail around the threads and use a strap wrench to remove the old rail and install the new one. Easy Peasy.

Well, that might be true for the AP4, but any AR-15 free float rail designed to fit over a low profile gas block will fit over DPMS Gen2's with free float barrel nuts and low profile gas blocks. I installed a very slim Nordic Components AR-15 free float tube in place of the OEM quad rail. You might consider cutting off your front sight posts, ordering a Gen2 FF barrel nut off the DPMS website, and then buying any AR15 rail you desire.

Here's the dual ejectors that DPMS has used for a few years now on the Gen2. I've put at least 5K rounds through mine and it eats and ejects everything - which let's be honest can be a problem for 308 AR's.

I think DD is just getting on board where the market is going. 556 just doesn't cut it for battle / larger game hunting and the 6.5, 6.8, 300 blackout, 458 socom, 50 Beowulf, etc. etc. just don't have the ammunition and reloading chops that the venerable 7.62x51 has had in place, both in NATO military and commercially - for decades. Besides, the Brits and Americans in Afghanistan have been incorporating more 7.62x51 battle rifles into their operations, and as a major DOD small arms vendor IMHO this makes sense for DD.

FWIW, I built out my Gen2 Recon to 3 gun specs. And it's a real shooter. Since it's a Gen 2, I used AR 15 Geisselle trigger and AR15 Nordic Components extended free float tube rail. Very affordable.

Yep, just heat up the old FFT rail around the barrel nut thread area and use a strap wrench. I took off the OEM quad rail on my Gen2 Recon and installed a longer Nordic Components 3-gun style rail.

I love my Gen 2 Recon ! Had it since early 2013, have about 5K rounds through it. No issues and a great shooter.

Foreground: I've shot about 5K rounds through my DPMS Gen2 Recon since I purchased it early in 2013. Do not mess with the DPMS Gen2 buffer system - it is indeed proprietary and tuned for the weight of that particular Gen2 BCG. .308 AR BCG's are not at all standardized like the AR15. In fact, the DPMS Gen2 Bolt Carrier is a proprietary monolithic billet design. I would argue that the DPMS Gen 2 has more parts interchangeability with the AR 15 than any other .308 AR design I know of. I use a Geisselle AR15 trigger and a Nordic Components AR15 free float front rail, and some BCM AR15 furniture. Action (buffer) spring "twang" is common in all AR's. Simply remove the buffer spring and buffer by depressing the detent, and coat the spring with wheel bearing grease. It's a common trick that's been done for years.
