I reread up the thread again, 98 suggested .090 since you have the adjustable gas block. I'd go by his advice. So I hate to add confusion, but maybe go .090 and back it down with the gas block as needed?!? It makes sense in my mind anyway.

Certainly not the expert by any stretch, but I believe yes, that should be the minimum if all else is proper with recoil and gas. Fwiw, that's where I'm starting on mine once my recoil/gas parts start trickling in.

Small framed and need to start concealed carrying.

Yeah, he bought me mine so I'd quit carrying his full-size after I smacked the doorframe of the Jeep with it accidentally. His is very sentimental now, so instead of being mad, we went that very afternoon and bought mine. -

I gotcha now. I have seen those. I didn't think about the belt buckle excuse. I do wear guys belts and buckles just cause all the cool buckles are made for guys. Great point! -
CLUTCH!!! Saw them and 5 Horse Johnson at The Loft in Atlanta years ago. Wow at the memories that's bringing back!

@sketch Do you mean like the belly band style? If it's the same thing, we've got one that's like a over sized ace bandage. Works ok for him, but I'm so small that the Velcro adjustment runs out before it gets tight enough to support the weight of the pistol. Plus again, I'd hate for one of my kids to run up and hug me only to get beat with a grip on accident. -

I'm thinking I may take one of our cloth holsters and rig it up like that around the house and unloaded for a couple hours just to see. -

@Sisco Good read there. I totally loved the nursing home range day. What a great idea! Especially for the men, surely some of them were Vets. -

@Sisco I was actually looking at 9mm XD's. We even used to have one! Regretting getting rid of it now..... Bwahahaha. Yeah I hear ya hotrod! -
So up until very soon, I've always had to open carry on my hips if I was to carry any decent size pistol. Excluding a Beretta Minx that I carry in my sports bra when I jog. I have been asked to start concealed carrying twice a week for about 2hrs at a time while I volunteer. The biggest kicker is that I will be directly involved with a group of young children the entire time. I won't be able to properly secure a purse, and I'm afraid that anything in the waist would be too easy for a child to accidentally hug up against or heaven forbid run into and black a eye or something. I can see the headline now, "Little Billy pistol whipped by conservative volunteer over dispute during Twister final round championship". Just kidding, but does my concern make sense? Same goes for a ankle type holster as we normally take off our shoes and lounge around on mats for the "story" portion of it. In a ideal world I'd like to stick with my 1911. I do have a M9 copy (Taurus) as well as a P-89 (Ruger) plus the Minx I mentioned earlier. The Minx is ridiculously easy to conceal, but it's a .22 short and I just don't feel very protected outside of point blank. Westgadad is onboard to possibly buy me another more compact pistol if it comes to that, and I find something I like. I'm left thinking about a Flashbang type of holster with a oversized shirt (he suggested a boob job and then I wouldn't need to huge shirt lol). Or some kind of shoulder holster with maybe a light flannel or something over it. The winter will be easy as my riding jacket is my always jacket and it's already setup for the 1911. Plus being as small as I am, I'm always cold and rarely take it off. I can easily survive 2hrs if I get slightly warm. Any suggestions or something I'm not considering?

Levon Helm, Dirt Farmer on vinyl. Might switch over to The Band on vinyl to keep the Levon Helm thing going tonight.

What made you decide to move to the 308 AR/AR-10 Platform?
Peachey replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
Well to be honest I didn't have a choice lol. My Mosin has been slated for reliable, simple, end of days, never fail you, cast bullet duty. If I'm being really honest, prior to now, I've never cared for a AR anything. We didn't have the money to own a nice AR when I was introduced to firearms. We could afford a $350 AK though, and I enjoyed that. I've always liked more traditional, ie wood furniture, guns. It's pleasing to my eye to pass the shotgun case and see the old worn steel and dark stained wood. Never looked at a AR the same way, they were/are just blah. But now, oh boy! I love my 308 AR. We've had 5.56's and even a .224 all of which were "cool", but just not for me. This 308 is MINE, and it fits ME, and I'm over the moon happy about it. I'm sure the honeymoon will fade, but I've got a feeling this is going to stand the test of time. Maybe I'm weird, maybe it's a girl thing, but I have to have a connection with a gun to really get into it. To the whole "wood furniture" thing, there's a rumour around my house that we may be collecting parts for a AR carbine in .300blk, with wood furniture!! -
We've got the drill type trimmer. I think it needs a 308 specific "pilot" as he called it (looks like a de priming pin). Got a Frankford digital scale, spent many hours goofing with that thing before we got the powder dispenser lol. The die set I ordered is a RCBS 15501. It says it has a crimper in the seating die, is it sufficient? I know I'm mixing RCBS dies and a Lee single press, but my understanding is that since it's a single it should work. We'll see?!? Oh, and the cone type burr tool and primer pocket tool we have as well. I hope to have it all together and ready to "roll my own" by Sunday. We've got a Habitat for Humanity thing we're doing on Saturday, so maybe we can swing by the mega gun store and grab some powder and projectiles and the other small tools I need while we're in the city.

Yeah, I'm kinda afraid of the expense too. I think I'm going to plan us a weekend bike trip and make a event our main stop. Just kinda spectate and mingle. See what it's all about in person. Westgadad has a desire for cowboy action shooting, so maybe we can see both and see where we'd fit in.
-
Oh yeah Mike, I have a RCBS die set coming as we speak! I discovered that my .45 shell holder is the same for 308, so that's already handled. Just need another single die for the auto disk powder dispenser and I think I'm ready to start.

Well I/we have never loaded 308 before. He's back off break right now but maybe can clarify better later in the morning. From what I understand we're just going to start with mild 150gr loads and just take some time figuring out what works and what doesn't. Plinking ammo as we'd call it. It'll be Winchester primers I know, cause we already have em. I assume Benchmark powder as that's what we have on hand. Some of the cases are Remington, some LC, some unidentified still. It's less than 100 total. In a nutshell, just playing it safe and taking our time. Right hand, front brake/throttle hand. I wrapped my index and thumb tight as I could stand around the grip and let the other 3 fingers relax. Back brake all the way except for a couple of red lights. Definitely a miserable ride, but I didn't want him to panic and worry, so I just waited to get home to tell him lol. It was frigid too (something like 34-35 that night), so that didn't help.

If you only knew 98, if you only knew..... Lolol. True story though, they were on a Daddy Daughter date night at the bowling alley, and I was at the class with a group of girlfriends. I rode myself there, I rode myself home!
-
I'm glad you threw that out there. I've looked at one before (Frankford I think?), but read some reviews that it was kinda taxing after a while. Don't laugh too hard, but I broke my right hand at a pole dance class a couple years back, and it gets sore pretty quickly these days. So needless to say, I've been kinda stand offish about it. In retrospect, laugh all you want, we do now lol.

Do any of y'all have any experience shooting 308 in 3 gun competition? I've never attended or tried a 3 gun, but I was googling around earlier and saw that there is a class that consists of 308, 12ga, and .45acp limited to 8rd mags. Well I've got all those! Also found a 3 gun "league" I'd guess you call it in the metro Atlanta area. So any input? I wouldn't expect to be fiercely competitive or even marginally competitive in the beginning, but who knows?!? Are 3 gun folks generally friendly or a bunch of snobs? I guess I should go mingle sometime and see what it's all about.

BTW, Mike, I really like your two single press set up. We've got just one, but have talked more than once about getting anywhere from 1-3 more. We want to have a dedicated portable loading bench/crate combo that can be a easy toss it in the Jeep and head to deer camp. Plus just a dedicated de primer. Plus one for my .45 depth/crimp that never ever ever needs to be touched lol. They're just so simple and affordable it's easy for us to dream about I guess.

I'm sorting out some 308/7.62 from this weekend. I've been told to sort by brand on these, something about internal volumes. Got probably 100-150rds of 45acp to de prime and clean. I should have already had it done, but Stranger Things has sucked my attention away tonight. So yeah, I guess I'm slacking on my end of the prep work lol.
