  1. Camo paint rattle can cerkote whatever would work. I employed a different approach which cost me about $30 and involved a mossy oak graphic gear skin, and one of two provided sheets covered the receiver and stock. I used regular camo tape on the barrel end, scope, and grip. I then used camo netting and rubber bands on the handguard/rail such that the ventilation still works. I cheat with the bipod, sling, magazines, and light mount. These I rattle canned The plus if this approach is that when winter hits I can easily switch out the tape and netting to make it more current with the season. Plus you aren't worrying about f-ing up the paint job
  2. As long as you shoot a good quantity of rounds you will save money (per round). That's especially if you are looking for rounds that are accurate in your rifle. You can find factory loads that your rifle likes but as likely as not these won't be the cheapest pos ammo you can find. Of course, many people spoil their cost saving with unnecessary nick knack tools and too much experimentation.
  3. The pan feature was the main deciding feature for me for the Magpul. They do sell Harris with a tilt but not pan I don't think. It didn't make sense to me to have a semi auto firearm for practical purposes on a bipod that locked into one place. for my hunting rifle I use a snipod from kramer design which is basically independent tent pole legs on a qd system. It's terrible for bench and not so great at rapid repeat fire. But at 5 oz you can pull it out of your pocket and get a quick steady shot sitting, kneeling, or prone in the field. I might put an adapter for it on this ar of mine for unconditional shooting positions.
  4. I have the Magpul but for bench shooting I'd look at the Harris or Harris style
  5. Out of the ones I have probably the Redding. I also have a Sinclair expander die and lee deprime I use with them.
  6. Mine works fine got it a few months ago but it's the 20 inch rifle length gas version. Bought the blem lower from psa also. Put it together the night I got the kit. Got 1 moa with my handloads pretty easily. No malfunctions. Spent <50 dollars on a heavier buffer and spring setup based on advice here. This wasn't necessary for the thing to function. My understanding is the gen III is new and improved from earlier versions at least in some ways. It definitely impresses me a lot more than any m16 or m4 I was ever issued. Accuracy is on par with a factory bolt gun.
  7. Well I guess there's no reason not to try adjusting the gas eventually just to make sure it isn't recoiling any more than it has to but I'm not too worried about it at the moment. Thanks.
  8. I received my buffer and spring today and swapped out the weights and installed them. I fired a magazine with two rounds and it cycled and locked back on the last round. I then inserted a full magazine and fired two rounds and it also cycled with a full magazine. Brass lands 10 ft away directly to my right. I'm not sure what is typical for a 308. I can try adjusting the gas down later.
  9. I haven't used his tuner partly because none of my barrels are rigged for it. I wouldn't skip testing seating depths I mean...he doesn't to my knowledge hence his chasing the lands vid. But I'm sure if you are trying to get the extra few bits in terms of accuracy it's going to get you there.
  10. Well I'm not a seamstress, so under close inspection you'll know something went down. But I'm calling this a success. In addition to dyeing the original camo pattern with dark green dye, I converted the middle six mag pouches into four by taking out the dividers and adding a 4 mag cloth insert. The two end pouches are designed for either magazines, a small radio, or a large gps unit so they already fit .308 mags. If you choose to use them as mag carriers you will have the standard 6 + 1 magazines. (Of course, these are 20 not 30 round magazines being a .308 so 140 not 210 rounds.) Also on the carrier is a ifak with complete march refill kit, compass, and a canteen pouch holding my bipod, weapons light, and four cliff bars in the grenade portion. The back pouches contain my camo face mask, camo gloves, additional camo netting, water filter and squeeze pouch, water tabs, lense wipes, and a multi tool. Optional additions are the three liter camelback for water and my existing hunting binocular carrier which also houses a range finder and wind meter.
  11. Ok thanks. I already cancelled the two additional weights but I should be able to scavenge the two in my current buffer and put into this one.
  12. Yes they are a little more compact I guess.
  13. For a rifle I'll take the .308. I've shot it in a bolt action hunting rifle for a while now and bought the ar just for this purpose. But I'm not sure how much ammo of any kind you will find if shtf as even after covid all ammo disappeared and if you did find something it was an oddball like .300 savage or 35 whelen. So having a variety might just be the smartest choice of all.
  14. No I'm working this a week to modify my rig to hold bigger mags. If that works I might just stick with the pmags. I'm not impressed by their bulkiness to include unnecessary ribbing 'for grip' and even the oversized cap on the bottom. But they are reliable even the military is starting to issue their 5.56 versions.
  15. In that case I'll order a heavy buffer that is only 2.5 inches long.
  16. I read some of your other threads. The rifle has a rifle length gas system, adjustable, 7 inch buffer tube, and h buffer. As of now the rifle functions and, while I rarely run a magazine dry, it locked back when I did. It ejects straight out the side but it does eject brass a long ways, over ten feet for sure. I just ordered two additional tungsten weight to turn the buffer into a h3 buffer. Perhaps this will slow down the cycling and lead to less parts wear and less recoil.
  17. So which specific parts often break on an ar308 and which would one want on hand?
  18. That ammo seems like a good deal especially if the primer shortage continues. I read elsewhere it is remanufactured and loaded with rl15. I might ask them what makes the .308 version different probably used the more blemished components.
  19. I guess my reason for asking is the stereotypical scenario where the world situation heads south and the only ammo I can find is some random m80 ball. Can I just load it up, click my scope over from previous testing, and be good? I've always felt this scenario is unlikely but given what just happened in Afghanistan might find some spare tanks and fighter jets to go along with my m80. But odds are I'd have to get us surplus m80 to test for it to be the same.
  20. I'm using my handloads with 175 smk but thought it might be good to get some m80 and maybe m118 to see how accurate it is, what the point of impact is, and what the velocity is. But I notice that these are from many manufacturers sometimes foreign so I'm concerned that what I get won't match with other available anyways.
  21. Thanks a lot of good options. Which is good I might need backups. My current setup has internal pockets and molle to attach my first aid kit and pouch too but it doesn't fit my mags too well. I'm going to use a seam ripper to remove the current dividers and turn it into one big pocket. Then I'm going to sew an insert out of canvas that fits my desired mags. Then I'm going to use fabric glue to glue it into the pockets. And if it doesn't work I'm not out much!
  22. Yah the cost of being different with the .308. What I like about the taps is that it holds the mags much more streamlined than attaching individual pouches and cost me $15 but buying pouches and a vest or other attachment also an option. The mag dividers are about three inches apart which is just big enough I think for any 7.62 mag so I think the metal mags with no curve will do better but still won't be perfect. I'm considering adjusting the dividers in the tap system for the small mag area holds 4 or 5 instead of 6 and then the two big pouches on the end.
  23. It's just the issue Tactical Assault Panel. UCP camo versions are now being sold as cheap surplus items. I don't know how common they were in issue. Ill get a few metal mags. If they fit better great. If not I can still fit five using every other thanks. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UPDBOS4
  24. The gun works fine. Looking for metal Mags people have had success with. Ps if someone has success fitting .308 Mags into standard taps chest rig thatd be good info too.
