  1. The range officer was sorta cagey so I didn't ask about shooting prone... This is shooting from a bench with just the bipod. The ammunition is Winchester remanufactured soft-tip in 168 grain. You can see pictures and buy it here. Edit: Link fixed. Sorry about that fellas.
  2. That would be 'Lower Parts Kit' if I'm not mistaken :)
  3. Well, I just got done with a thorough gun cleaning session. It's amazing how easily this gun comes apart and goes back together, I didn't even have to consult the manual :P
  4. Yeah, I ordered my standard break-in ammo from Cabela's, they ship very quickly. I think I will order a box and try it out next Saturday at the range.
  5. Hmmm, I may look into getting a box of this stuff. Might help speed the break-in process!
  6. LOL The rifle + a bench = slightly more weight than I can carry, but I have noticed that the ground seems to be underneath me with alarming frequency, meaning the world is just one great big benchrest. Thank goodness for bipods! On a more serious note, I wouldn't care to pack this rifle over any extended distances (more than 5 miles a day anyways) but if you're used to hiking/hunting with a well-equipped pack, the weight of this rifle when slung across your back is really not too bad at all. Then again, I'm fairly young and used to running 3 flights of stairs continuously 8 hrs daily 5 days a week. If my plant had an elevator, I'd be screwed indeed.
  7. You're an excellent judge of character, a better stock and an enidine recoil arrestor are on the "to buy" list. However, I really believe I'm not doing this gun justice. My breathing control was very erratic, cheek weld inconsistent, was fighting my eye relief, and just generally shooting like a palsy-afflicted geriatric with a stomach full of high-powered coffee. I've got a nice list of things to work on next weekend at the range.
  8. I found a range suitable for break-in today. It's only 100 yards, but it's all I need to get the gun on paper and a few rounds run through it. I sent about 60 rounds downrange today and learned several things: #1. My shooting sucks, I haven't shot a rifle in several years, and boy did it show. #2. The rifle on the other hand, is awesome! It is by far a much better shooter than I am. #3. This baby is some major eye candy at the range, there wasn't one shooter there that didn't stop by my lane and ask or comment about it. #4. This thing is absolutely a blast to shoot, it's just incredible. Here's a pic of the lasty 20 rounds I fired: It (my shooting) definitely needs to improve, but that's why I will be at the range again next weekend.
  9. I'm in Maiden, NC and the nearest big town is Hickory. The trouble is not really a lack of ranges at all, it's ones that are publicly accessible and decent yardages in combination. However, to get back to your point, Virginia is not a bad drive on weekends if it would be possible to get a good day's shooting out of it. ... just about any bb gun will do equally well @ 200 yrds. The science is in getting it there... As a matter of fact, I'd suggest that if you wanted to stand any chance of the BB getting there, launch the rifle with it. ;D
  10. Welcome Dunerunner!!! Be sure to post pics of your progress :)
  11. I actually laughed so hard this cheered me up, :P It's called a pneumatic mortar DNP, the fine art of launching a .177 projectile across 200 yds using only compressed air. Tailwinds, extreme trajectory, and the proper holding of the jaw ( don't forget planetary alignment and whether or not it's a leap-year ) are the key factors in accuracy.
  12. Ok, so I've got my LR-308 all decked out, ready for action, so I spend my free time this evening looking for a suitable place to break-in and sight my beast in. NOT HAPPENING! >:( Any outdoor range with 100-400 yards to work with would be superb, BUT public ranges are downright mythical (within reason anyways, I don't wanna drive 4 hrs), and membership costs for private access ranges (that are quite short distance-wise) are insane. So then that leaves asking total strangers with suitable acreage, (hard to find in my suburban area) which is a little awkward. "Yes, uh, I know this is probably a little unusual but I've noticed that you have a nice flat area with a terrific dirt backstop and I was just wondering if it would be alright to fire a couple hundred rounds of extremely high powered rifle ammo down there..." Hmmm, I wonder how this would fly? I have my doubts... I'm beginning to wonder if I won't have to shelve my rifle and stare at it wanly from time to time as I impatiently bide my time saving the money for a membership at the nearest gun club with a suitable range... *sigh* :'( All right, I'm done depressing myself for now. Thanks for listening.
  13. Sounds awesome, can't wait to see pics 8)
  14. I know the feeling, my 2" bipod picatinny for my VTAC is still somewhere out in oblivion, and I ordered a free float/barrel wrench from DPMS two weeks ago and haven't seen hide nor hair of either. Waiting sucks.
  15. Yes, thank you. I'd just noticed the same thing and couldn't help but wonder could you get the crazy thing without having to jump through hoops. I may be a while getting one though, gonna have to do barrel break-in and then get my VTAC FFHG on before I add anything else to the LR....
  16. A machinist after my own heart.... You have made me desperately aware of the need for my own shop, :-\
  17. Is it possible to get a chromed carrier that is NOT a kit? I'd like the chromed carrier, but I don't need a whole assembly, though I don't mind if it comes with the gas key installed already.
  18. The 1911. It's actually been around since 1908 ('11 was the year the military adopted it) and you can't argue with 102 years of reliability. :)
  19. I just discovered this thread and I must say, I LIKE IT!!!! My CCW is a Rock Island Armory 1911-style .45, full size, black w/ stainless barrel.
  20. Welcome Matt, my name is Matt as well. I have the 24" bull barrel and while I can't imagine wanting to cut it at all, if I were going to I wouldn't cut it short of 18". The reasoning is that the larger percentage of reviews and opinions I have seen for 18-20" barrels were almost entirely positive, while 16" barrels had a trend towards a few disappointed customers. Fluting looks awesome, but I think it would affect weight more than accuracy, and only slightly at that. In your shoes I would look into purchasing an 18" barrel and suitable gas block before throwing a well-designed long barrel into a lathe. Just my 2 cents worth.... ;)
  21. Very good looking gun!!! I love the looks of these badboys, I have yet to meet an AR that doesn't just look mean.
  22. Interesting that you should mention weight, I weighed it today @ work, (chemical factory) and without the scope & mount the rifle (w/ magazine & bipod) totals 12.288 lbs. Unfortunately, my scope mount didn't arrive in time to get my range time in, so I will be waiting for Saturday to come before I can shoot it. Everybody that I know personally that has seen this gun now wants one ;D
  23. Just curious about where you shoot Ted, I'm near Hickory and looking for a decent range.
  24. If you still want one, mine came within normal shipping dates, so I'd say they're restocked. The only thing that JP had on backorder was actually the 2" picatinny rail for my LaRue QD sling stud. The VTAC came immediately. Edit: The SPR-S mount and Mueller optic are now installed!!!
