monkeybiz192
Happy New Year everyone. I have decided to give my son my Savage FP10. I am looking to replace it with a semi auto .308. I don't hunt much at all, primarily target shooting and some practical rifle competitions. The longest range at my is 600 yards and I have access to an 800 yard range (just not as often. I am not going to be humping this thing through the woods or mountains, so weight is not a concern. The primary goal of this rifle is accuracy. (as close as I can get to my FP10) I gave him my reloading set up so it will be off the shelf ammo. I am looking to stay in the $1,500 range I would like to have a decent amount of options for aftermarket goodies (stocks, handguards, magazines etc.) So, I am approaching this from the barrel back. I am looking at the AR10TBNF, DPMS G2 Bull, & the RRA LAR-8 Varmint. Any thought on those 3 or any others you think I should be considering? Thanks in advance, glad I found this forum. Lots of great info.
Rsquared
Well, of course I'm gonna say to get the Armalite. What else would I say? <laughs> Welcome to the board monkey.
unforgiven
Welcome from Indiana brother,I have a RRA damn good rifle.Armalite has had some good pricing on thier AR10 models.
monkeybiz192
Thanks Unforgivien. I spoke with a rep at RRA, they stated all of the handguards and stock were proprietary. Any advise on upgrades for either? I'm not a fan of the A2 stock. Any issues with it being picky on ammo (Are there a wide range of off the shelf ammo that will shoot accurately)? Any experience with their NM trigger? Do you run FAL mags? Thanks
edgecrusher
While I think the RRA is a good rifle, you'll find more options with the Armalite. The G2 is getting good reviews but is also proprietary with not too many options out there yet, or maybe there is but nobody's figured out what works. A standard DPMS may offer as many choices as the Armalite. If it was my money, and these were my choices, I'd sway Armalite
monkeybiz192
Thanks Edge. Any thoughts on the quality of the barrels between the 3?

monkeybiz192
Unforgiven, Will the RRA buffer tube accept any other stocks. I have seen the Magpul PRS installed on the LAR8. I was a little confused about the length of the charging handle interfering with the cheek riser. Is there a simple solution? Thanks
unforgiven
RRA uses commercial tubes. One of the bro's here used an extention spacer on A2 type tube to clear charging handle.Cheap mod to make stock work. Not sure if thier is a difference in buffer weight for A2 and Car type stock.Haven't seen any other buffer for LAR-8. monkeybiz192
Thanks again. So any commercial (not mil-spec) buffer tube should work?
unforgiven
Don't see why mil-spec won't work, but I would call and ask to make sure, commercial is just what RRA uses.Anytime.
monkeybiz192
In your opinion, is there any difference or benefits with the HBAR vs. Varmint barrel?
unforgiven
http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=257 & http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=401 Not sure as the varmit is a bull barrel.I think both would have some weight.16" model might be a little lighter.Armalite might be lighter yet.If you have to hump it might be something to consider.Look at you'r application for the rilfe.
