This is for an AR 15 , but relates to any caliber AR .

Had an AR 15 come to me today because of Failure to fire any brand of ammo & as soon as I looked at the rifle , I could see the Hammer pin was out about an 1/8" or so & the Hammer was cocked to one side . I put the pin in all the way & it seemed to lock in place on the pin keeper . Using a primed empty case , it set the primer off , no problem .

I removed the FCG & the Hammer looked like it was OK in the Pin hole , with the wire in the middle that holds the Pin in place , but didn't want to take the chance of it being broken or weak & having this happen again , so I replaced the FCG . Another primed empty case & it fired off the Primer .  He was Happy because I put in a Spikes Enhanced trigger group w/Pins , I had sitting around .

Just thought I'd pass it along , because I have heard of the Pin Keeper in the Hammer losing its capability to Keep The Pin in place , but have never seen one do it , not that its 100% certain , this one did , but why take the chance , as said. The owner is not the type to disassemble any more than normal cleaning , so I can rule out someone removing & not assembling correctly .

He took it home & dumped a twenty rounder & all is well .

J-Spring.  That's the J-Spring failing.  I've currently got a stock-type trigger with a broken J-Spring.  I'll fix it if I can find the damn spring somewhere.

One of these will fix that trigger you took out - let me know if you can find one cheap somewhere, with cheap shipping.  My usualy "quick searches" failed me, so my trigger sits in the parts box.

Any chance you took a picture of it before you fixed it ?

No photo's , I pushed it back in once I straightened out the Hammer , before I even had a thought about it .  As most know , once the Hammer pin comes out of the Receiver hole , spring pressure forces it cocked to one side  & to install the Pin , you have to over come spring pressure to align the Hammer, for the Pin to go in the far side .

I'm more surprised this "Marine "didn't notice the pin sticking out & I'll bet he was MF'ing himself when he left here . Since he knows I'm Navy <lmao>

Didn't cost him a dime , except the fuel to come over here .

Thanks, 98 , I couldn't remember the name of that damn spring & was too lazy to look up the name , I figured most would know what i was speaking of . I have heard of people replacing them , but on a std Hammer , bye bye Hammer , not worth it to me .

I've looked at the spring before & really don't want to even play with any replacement . You can only see a little of that spring & how to get it out would take some doing .  STD MilSpec Hammers are cheap .

Replacing that J pin it a PITA ,3 hand job, 2 tools and the part placed in position. Hmmmm two Ruger 7.62's have had this happen.

DPMS has them for $0.40 each, and I had 20 of them in the cart.  $5.00 shipping.  I've just never ordered them because I don't know when they'd show up.  The only other place I've ever seen them is from another parts company (not a manufacturer), and they wanted $2.95 each for them.  Eff that.

I might order the DPMS parts just to see how long it takes to get here.
