ARINGA
Hello to everyone. This is my first post on this forum and I'm happy to be a new member. Here is my question. I want to build a .308 on the AR platform and don't know where to begin. I see people speaking about the Armalite AR-10 and how it differs from other .308 AR's. Can someone explain this to me? I want to build a rifle by combining the parts that will best suit my needs. Plus, when this gun is complete I want to be able to look at this rifle and admire what I put together. Thank you in advance for your time and help with this. Take care and God bless.
EngrBob
Some of the experts will chime in with great information but basically an AR-10 is made by Armalite while AR308s are based on a DPMS model. There are far more options on the DPMS platform but unlike the AR-15 a standard specification ensuring all manufacturers parts fit together does not exist. I suggest you read through the posts on builds to get started. In my case I built on the DPMS patterns with Spikes Tactical receivers, a Faxon barrel, MechArmor trigger and charging handle and an AIM BCG. jtallen83
Welcome aboard from Iowa! The differences between makers question could fill a page or two and then leave out some details. There are now differences in patterns even within the same maker. Start with the build articles on the forum page;http://308ar.com/category/projects/Browse through the tech subforum;http://forum.308ar.com/forum/9-308-ar-technical/Work the search function here;http://forum.308ar.com/search/Read, read, and read some more. You need to decide what you are going to do with the rifle, what are your expectations for it? Do you have experience with the AR 15?Most of all before you order or buy any parts post a parts list and the guys here will scrutinize it for possible issues or suggest improvements. ARINGA
Thank y'all for the wonderful input. I'm sure I'll stumble along the way but as long as I learn from it I'll be alright. This gun will be used to basically go out and have fun with. I'm interested in learning how to shoot long range so this is what I need to keep in mind as I try to accomplish this build. I could go out and buy one but I've always wanted to attempt a build so here I go....If it takes me a year then so be it. Once again , thank y'all for the input. ChaseFan9
Schit, the Wildcats just played a HS FB game against Valdosta last week, I'm like 2 he's away, too! Welcome to the forums, brother, always good to have another GB around. These guys might be a little intimidating at first, but there's no better place to go for this stuff, and I think you'll like it here :)
