Cw434
I will be picking up my 308 oracle from cabelas this weekend and i will immediately be looking to change and add a few things. I have been searching for the best handguard for my situation for two weeks with no luck so I thought I would come here. I plan to use my 16" carbine length for hunting and target(mostly hunting) so I am trying to trim the weight. I would also like to be able to add and remove rails when/where I see fit. So my question is who makes the lightest customizable free float tube to fit my newer rail height dpms? Also I am interested in leupold glass in the $4-500 range and I saw cabelas has many on sale. Any advice on glass and mounts for a hunting rifle with no buis? I don't plan on ever shooting past 400 yards
bgc
Check Brownell's for Free Float Tube and Sinclair's for glass. Also Natchez if you know what scope you're looking for
Jgun
You might want to give these guys a call to ask if their handguard rail height matches the new DPMS height (if you like this type of handguard). I bought one of their handguards for an AR-15 and it appears to be of good quality. It's certainly lighter than the aluminum fived Quad rails, and you can add or remove rails as you see fit. The full carbon tubes may possibly be a little lighter though. http://www.apexcncmachine.com/store.php?seller=ApexMachiningCompany&navt1=19974&pd=3133547
imschur
I think Troy might be your only non DPMS option thats available at this time. Are you hell bent on the Leupold? In that price point a Nikon Monarch or Buckmaster might be better with maybe a Bushnell or Nikon mount. You can even swap out turrets for target turrets at a later date. Food for thought
Cw434
I'm really interested in that apex system but the shortest version they have is a 9" mid length. The oracle is a carbine length. This being my first ar platform I'm unsure if it will work or do I have to stick with carbine handguards? I'm not sold on any particular glass as of now but those leupolds caught my eye, especially the ar line. I'm a little out of my element here and VERY open to suggestions. My goal is to have a very solid lightweight hunting rifle with the ability to double as an all day range gun. Like I said never a shot past about 400. Jgun
I'm sorry, for some reason I mistakenly thought you were looking for a free floating handguard. I now see that the oracle uses non free float "glacier guards" Which look to be pretty light already . I will take a look around and see if I can find anything else besides the Troy offerings that Imshur suggested.
survivalshop
Nikon scopes. As said the Buckmaster /Monarch . I also like Burris scopes. Do you want a two piece hand guard system ,that you can just replace the std. AR carbine hand guards ?
Cw434
I think for now I would like to replace the glacier guards with whatever I can put in myself without having to buy any tools. Later on down the road maybe I'll go to a free float. For a scope, I'm looking for something a little more powerful than a 3x9 so I can see those farther targets better. A wide field of view when zoomed out and Mildots or some kind of holdover would be nice. Must be clear and great in low light since it will be my main whitetail rifle. Is there any particular model I should check out? Also what do you suggest for mounts if I'm not running buis? A one piece or just rings? Should I keep it as low as possible? Any and all advice is very appreciated.
hobbesgunner
Burris PEPR mount is strong, light...Buckmaster 4.5-14 is a fine scope for the $$$$...4.5 might be little hi powered for deer in the woods..but 14 power let's you see out there a ways...check out Leupold Mark AR scopes...mid price range and they'll make custom bullet drop turret for whatever you shoot in it...they're calibrated for 55gr .223 out to 600 yds. Cw434
[list type=decimal][*][*]Nevermind. Just got an email from midway and their forearm won't line up but in about four weeks they will have one that will.
Jgun
The only other hand guard that I could think of that meets your criteria for removable rails and is also pretty light, is the D series from JP Rifles. It's a freefloat also (which isn't a bad thing) and seems to be available in more lengths than the Apex, but would require you to break out the tools to install it. imschur
I put together a drilled down search at brownells here for you. It's not perfect but you see some relevant non free float two piece handguards.Doublestar,Daniel Defense,YHM and MI are all good choices. All about the same price range too. survivalshop
Ya , matching the rail height will be more work than assembly, but do you really need them to match ,except for looks ?You seem to have found one to match from Midway . Try contacting the manufactures of the above list to see if they match up.
