I apologize since I'm sure this question has been answered before but I am a newbie and not quite sure how to do a efficient search without spending an hour or two.

I bought an Armalite Series A AR lower.  I now want to complete the set:)   I am considering completing a stripped upper.  I am thinking of getting a stripped Armalite Series A upper and buying DPMS upper parts including barrel.

Is this possible?

DPMS pattern barrel and bolt will work. Most of the small parts will work except maybe  the bolt catch and the pins, best to stick with Armalite parts for those. Might be advantageous to use the Armalite mag release as well.

The upper receiver only really has a few parts;

1. Barrel nut: this is specific to the make of the upper. DPMS and Armalite have different thread patterns.

2. Ejection port cover: the .308 ejection port cover is universal.

3. Forward assist: TBH, I hate this feature and don’t have a use for it. They are also generic and universal.

4. Charging Handle: I guess we can call this a part. It doesn’t really matter though, because they too are universal (unless you buy an RRA).

5. Bolt: it doesn’t matter which one you choose, as long as you match the barrel design.

6. Carrier: there’s a common belief that the bolt and carrier should match. This is an old school mentality and not really a factor any more. Get a carrier that fits your upper and should be ok.

You really should stick to Armalite parts, not because they are required, but because they are made better than LR308 parts. I use several Armalite parts in my DPMS pattern rifle. Specifically the bolt hold and magazine catch.

So carriers are different for different makes of uppers?

That is my intent.

Not really. They just aren’t all created equal.

The .308 doesn’t have a “spec” so you may end up with a carrier that doesn’t want to cooperate with your upper. If it looks like a fitment problem, then a different carrier may be needed. I recently had a bad carrier that was off a few thousandths on a shoulder. That little hang up caused a drag mark inside the upper. Just little things to keep in mind with the tricky .308 builds.
