I am not really working on a build but I did buy an Armalite AR-10 T that for whatever reason someone put a Magpul STR stock on it. I have an A2 stock but the buffer tube is longer than the Magpul. My question is do I need to make any changes to either the buffer, spring or tube?

This is the spring and buffer in the A2 tube.

How much does quality vary between buffer tubes?

It certainly can vary as there is no real spec for the large platform. If it was me and I had an actual armalite ar10 I’d buy actual armalite components if possible. But that’s just me.

Pump the brakes, people.

OP, Whatever you have in that collapsible stock (receiver extension) is not going to work in a rifle stock config.  You already stated a 2.500" buffer, so it's a DPMS-based buffer, that means it's a 7.000" internal depth AR15 carbine receiver extension.

That 10" spring is junk.

You need a rifle receiver extension that's 9 11/16" internal depth - they all are, and are hardly ever screwed up.  Measure anyway.  You need a rifle buffer that's 5.200" long, 5.4 oz.  That's how long .308AR rifle buffers are, for Armalite and DPMS-based platforms(I've seen some DPMS LR-308 rifle buffers that are 5.311", and a tick over). AR15 rifle buffers are 5.900" long, and that won't work in a .308AR.  You need the cheap, but REAL, Armalite EA-1095 recoil spring.  Not some rip-off or a fake.

After that, you need to figure out what stock you're putting on it.  If you're going with an A2 stock, like a surplus stock, then you need a few specific things that adapted the A2 to the rifle recoil system. If you're going with an A1-spec'd stock, just mount it up.
