jon308
If I buy the parts how long should it take a gun smith to change out gas block and handguards, I understand you have to remove barrel to do this change so is this a 4hr job 8hr job. Just want to know aproximate so have Idea if being given run around. Thanks Jon
Robocop1051
Are you changing from a two piece handguard to a free-float rail system? What kind of gas block do you have now, and what kind of gas block do you plan on going to?Generally, First the muzzle device is removed. Next the gas block is removed. If the current handguard is a standard two piece system, that can be removed prior to the gas block. I usually change the gas tube the same time as the gas block since it's just a quick $10-$15 part, so no reason to take the old gas tube out of the old gas block. Next the barrel nut must come off, but only if the new handguard or free float tube requires a new barrel nut. If the same nut is going to be used for the next accessory, then start reassembling. You don't need to pull the barrel out of the receiver, and it's easier to work on the parts of the barrel is left in the receiver. Just work backwards from there. Barrel nut goes back on, either the handguard/free-float or the gas block goes on next (depending on what combo you are using). Last reattach the muzzle device.Worst case scenario. I think if I had a standard carbine with a taper pinned A2 front sight gas block and delta ring assembly, and I was upgrading to a low profile gas block with a free float tube... I would have the work done in about two hours, tops. That would give me enough time to finish the job, clean up my work and enjoy my coffee. The one system that would add a considerable amount of time is the Daniel Defense rails. That's only because all those damned allen screws that are required to mount the rail.
jon308
I believe high gas block with short rail is what I have going back with micro block, Have carbine length free float going back with rifle length free float, so should order another gas tube for new block? carbine length right. It will be the dpms quad rail, also will same barrel nut work

DO THIS BEFORE YOU START ORDERING PARTS !I hate to come off like an A-hole but you are unclear on what you want. You may get parts that wont be compatible,(carbine...rifle ,high or low profile ). <dontknow>

If you don't have many rounds down range, pipe cleaner it and re-assemble. Mike, he has another thread that explains the other stuff. MikedaddyH
Here are some examples of rails... First 3 are Troy last 2 are JSE. They are rifle length 12" to 13.8", you can put a low profile gas block under/inside them to get the 3-Gunner look. Is this what you are after? MikedaddyH
I just want him to order the right parts {same height Upper to Rail } then the low/micro gas block which will fit under it.Was reading the other thread over and found the answer on page two, even though jon didn't post a pic. The solution... SELL the High upper receiver(old model) and BUY the Low upper receiver then you can put the Troy rail your mind is set on. It goes for $210 with charging handle ,less w/out.
