medic83 Posted April 26, 2013 Report Posted April 26, 2013 Ive decided on my scope. Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50... FFP with illuminated reticle. Im just unsure on what reticle to get. Im new to scopes, I would really appreciate some help and advice. Pros and Cons to each. Thanks!
subwofer2 Posted April 26, 2013 Report Posted April 26, 2013 (edited) MOST important piece of advice is to get yourself an optic with matching reticle and turrets. Meaning, if you have a MRAD reticle, your turrets should be mil/mil. I'm a mil/mil kind a guy. I like the metric side of the house because I can do a lot of the calcs in my head easier. I'm not so good with the Mil-dot. My advise is to do a little research on how to actually shoot and range with both types and use the system your most comfortable with. There are some programs light Long Range Shooter for your computer out there where you can actually simulate shooting with different calibers at different ranges and in variable winds. This is where I first learned the mil system and haven't looked back since. Edited April 26, 2013 by subwofer2
BLKSHEEP Posted April 26, 2013 Report Posted April 26, 2013 Man I struggled with that also, Read this (7 pages) http://demigodllc.com/articles/practical-long-range-rifle-shooting-optics/?p=1 it's the best info. that I've found all in one place. This > IPHY =1" @100yards (which is what most hunting scopes are) 1-MOA = 1.047"
medic83 Posted April 26, 2013 Author Report Posted April 26, 2013 Well I ordered the scope. I went thru cameralandny. got public safety discount. 850$ shipped! Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP MRAD illuminated reticle.
planeflyer21 Posted April 26, 2013 Report Posted April 26, 2013 Excellent! Those guys are great over there. I ordered during hurricane Katrina and got it in about a week. I went MOA, just because it's what I'm used to. Jon
BLKSHEEP Posted April 27, 2013 Report Posted April 27, 2013 I'm jealous  This would come in handy > http://www.mildot.com/
blue109 Posted April 27, 2013 Report Posted April 27, 2013 SWFA has deals pretty regularly where they give those away with mil dot Scopes. Worth keeping an eye on if you are in the the market anyway.
Zebra644 Posted April 27, 2013 Report Posted April 27, 2013 The Mil-Dot master is a nice tool to have. I have been around Mil-Dot scopes so long that I stick with what I know and most people know the math object size times 27.77 devided by size object in mills measured via scope. On FFP whatever power you have it on , SFP on 10 power usually
