Jonas Posted November 27, 2013 Report Posted November 27, 2013 Just how long can one go in a .308AR barrel before it just gets dumb? Doesn't the .308 need a longish barrel to really get out accurately to 800+ yards? Seems like 20" is kind of a standard longest, anything else going to be custom?

Are you just ringing steel and poking holes in paper? Or are you trying to put hot pieces of metal into furry meat? I can show you a video of an 8" barrel shooting a suppressed 205gr 300Blk out to 700+ yards... I don't think I'd hunt like that though.

But I've never had a chance to even attempt anything at that range. The local range I prefer is 200 yards max! But still, one of these days, maybe I'll have a chance at a looooong range. There are a bunch of guys shooting 175gr out to 1k yds with 16" barrels. That is danged respectable! One of the reasons I brought it up was from reading a review RE the Remington 870 where they tested 20" and 24" barrels - not that the 20" barrel couldn't get out to 100 yards, but sounded like the 24" was a better with heavier projectiles. (I know, then just buy a Remington 700!) - but still, I would not mind having a really accurate and long range semi-auto. 1000 yards? Nice, round number - I'd like to build something that could do this and it sounds like it is not beyond expectation for a .308AR. I just don't want to sell myself short, but don't want to waste money on something that really won't make a difference either.
bubbasks Posted November 27, 2013 Report Posted November 27, 2013 My 22" makes it out there with a respectable 1moa and 168s
Jonas Posted November 28, 2013 Report Posted November 28, 2013 My 22" makes it out there with a respectable 1moa and 168s And their prices seem quite reasonable, to me anyway!
bubbasks Posted November 28, 2013 Report Posted November 28, 2013 I built mine right during the rush and everyone was selling at outrageous prices so buying the high quality stuff was a no brainer especially bc they were in stock. Cheaper than what the opportunists were selling their base items.
