Most recent thing I've read on it is that James Edwards, one of the murderers, made numerous posts on his twitter account, prior to the attack, saying that he was going to take out "woods", and that Police chief Dan Ford, does not consider that to be sufficent grounds to  classify the killing as a hate crime. Hopefully, the DA that prosecutes the case will have a different opinion. I guess the victims race had nothing to do with Edwards decision to shoot him in the back.
