There are probably better forums to post this in, but this is a good place to start. While I am waiting for my MA-TEN recievers, i decided i need another project. If anyone knows where to get a good deal on a Drako AK pistol or has one for sale, I am very interested in purchasing it. Thanks for any info in advance.

1 piece 30mm scope mount w/ 20moa cant?
TomBruto replied to TomBruto's topic in Optics & Mounts, BUIS,Sights
Well I went with the American Defense 20MOA 30mm 1 piece base. My 308 is not finished yet, still lack the recievers, buffer tube and spring, and safety selector. But i have it on my ar15 for now with a swfa 5-20x hd, which is way too much scope for it, but my initial impressions of the mount are good. Though i havent tested it very much, i can safely say it is hunting accurate, with crap ammo. 1.5 to 2moa at 100. And it seems to be holding zero very well, especially since i dont have it tightened down very much. -
RoboCop, I like your fathers style. I have read articles that say the 6.5x55swiss has taken just about every big game animal that walks the earth. Though not at extreem ranges. The 260 is supposed to be nearly identical, ballistically. I am building a precision rifle, and regardless of bullet choice, i hope it is at worst a 1/2 to 3/4 moa shooter( with decent ammo). Those may be bold assumptions, but that is my goal. Also shot placement is paramount for me. But I have found, it is much more devestating to shoot something in the head with a 308 than a 223, and i would expect it to be better than the 260 as well. The saying, "if it aint broke, dont fix it!" comes to mind, or "If a little is good, alot is better!" I will most likely build this rifle in 308, and probably rebarrel my savage to a 260 down the line. I always figured on a bolt action 260 anyways. Thanks to all for the input. I hope to be posting pictures of my build as it comes together. But it will most likely be a slow process.

Howdy from West TX. My step father has a ranch in Big Wells and I have a few friends with ranches in Crystal City. My good buddy owns the ranch at the corner of 44 and 83 near Encinal. That is my back yard. I am originally from a small town 10 mi east of uvalde, but those are my old stomping grounds, down to Loredo and over to Kingsville. Love that country. Even the rattlle snakes.

Howdy from far west TX as well, though maybe not as far. Im in the Marfa Alpine area. My ar 308 is arriving slowly in pieces. You can do alot more with a 4x than people would lead you to believe. Good choice for a go to rifle, that is how my ar 15 is set up.

I agree, after much thought over the weekend, and all of yalls input I have decided to stick with the original plan, 308. For all of the ethical hunting questions, the primary reason for this build is to eradicate as many wild hogs on a west Texas ranch as I can. While I will always opt for an ethical kill, I will not pass up a chance to remove one more because of distance. The terrain is very rocky and nearl impossible to travel over quietly, so stalking is impossible. What I have is a hill top that overlooks a very important canyon for them. It is one of the few natural pathways where you can get out of the river bottom, and there are 3 feeders in it, the farthest one being at 640 yards. I have been using my savage 10 FCP, 308, and it can do it with good shot placement easily. But I think I can get a few more with an automatic. Blksheep, I was unaware such a thing existed! Thank you for enlightening me!

Thanks for the info, I want to stay away from the 338 federal. I hear that round isnt that accurate, but honestly I would like a little more velocity even if it was. I just think those .264 cal bullets are sexy as hell. I know the smaller bullets require better shot placement but I was never one to aim for center mass. I am almost anal about shot placement. I prefer head, neck, then shoulder in that order as range increases. Another round I thought of is the 7mm-08, but there is not enough difference between that and the 308 for me to go that rout. Might as well keep the ammo availability of the 308. I have always thought the 260 had potential, just wasn't sure if it could be achieved in a gas gun. Maybe I should just stick with the 308. Honestly the only thing that is steering me towards the 260 is the fact that I already have a 308, and my addiction tells me to try something new. Actually, I also was thinking of lighter recoil for follow up shots. But I guess I can always get a 260 barrel down the line. Blksheep, I almost jumped on the 338 band wagon with my buddy, but decided I needed a high powered automatic instead. I am happy at 1000, I don't need to go out to 2000 just yet. When I decide to build my 338, it will probably be the .338 Norma mag improved. It's on par with the lapua, but with a more efficient case so it uses less powder and the brass is half the price.

It is good to know that these rounds function well in the AR platform. I would like to be able to make an accurate shot at 1000 yds, i realize this is a stretch for a gas gun, but if i build a 1/2 moa rifle, I would be confident I could do it. Most of my shots will be in the 300-700 yard range, but i would like it to be capable of further. I will be reloading mostly, but will try some factory ammo. I have a 308 boltaction and love it, just was wondering if the 260 has any advantages over the 308. I have alot of 308 brass that i can resize, and i know that lapua started making 260 brass, though i am not sure i want to be flinging it out of an automatic. I think i read that article also, did it also compare the 6.5x47? What i dont know is what kind of damage it will do to a 300+ lb hog at 630 yards. I would most likely be shooting heavier high bc bullets.

Hello all, I am building my first long action AR, I refrain from saying AR308 because i cant decide wheather it should be a 308 or a 260. Does anyone have any experience with the 260 in this platform? Or maybe the 6.5 creedmore. I know these 26 cal bullets are preformers, what i dont know is how much damage they do on medium sized game, mostly wild hogs. I know the 308 does the trick effectively. But i have wanted to build a 260 for a while now and am just wondering if it would work well in an AR. So any info on accuracy, issues, terminal ballistics, range, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

i like the idea of temporary cammo, i can see how it may reduce the noise from blind hunting. But i also see how it could get snagged on brush while stalking. Whatever the case it seems to serve you well. Amen to the post about scratches and wear on guns. I use all of my guns, not just shoot them. Some have pretty much been dragged across alot hard country, and they have the scars to show it. Scars give character and make a gun more interesting, imho.

Very nice, +1 on how it shoots -
1 piece 30mm scope mount w/ 20moa cant?
TomBruto replied to TomBruto's topic in Optics & Mounts, BUIS,Sights
Thanks for all the links, I must have overlooked some of those. I thought about the riser and rings, but hadnt researched into that much yet. I see they have "elevated" risers. Sorry for the misuse of the word "cant", I thought thats what they called it when i got a base for my bolt action. I have been using cant to describe that for years now haha. Thanks for correcting me. -
Hello all, forgive me for posting another thread about scope mounts, but I am sure i am missing something. I am looking for a 1 piece scopemount to go on my MATEN build. It must be 30mm and have a 20 moa cant. It does not have to be QD nor does it need to be ofset forward sence my upper is monolithic. I have spent the last few days researching, but some of the descriptions are vague. I really like the Warne R.A.M.P. mount, but i cant find wether it has the 20moa cant or not. I guess i am describing the Larue Tactical PSR but without the QD, and hopefully without the price tag also. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with something like i described? Thanks in advance.

This post is almost exactly like my first post a few weeks ago hahaha. My parts list, is almost exactly the same with the exception of buffer, gas block, and barrel. Oh and my mega mono will have the single rail on the top. Matt.Cross How do you like that barrel? Is it made by Criterion?
-
Everybody, great info, thanks. I bet whith the bedding and the tensioning screws or the NM pins, the upper and lower would have a rock solid fit and hopefully contribute a measurable gain of accuracy. Usually I will see group sizes cut in half after i bed a bolt action. I dont think it would be quite that significant on an ar platform, but i wouldnt be surprised to see a noticable improvement. I believe that a perfect fit of action to stock is or can be just as important as barrel, or scope, when precision is the goal. Needless to say i will be experementing with this pretty soon. And to get rid of any gap between the recievers, assuming there are still some even though i plan on using oversized pins, I would just clean the top face of the lower reciever, and put some release agent on the upper, and bed them together. Which may even get rid of more play in the fit. Only down side, the lower will be completely dedicated to that particular upper.
-
Wow, good info! I would definately try this on my ar15 first. The upper and lower dosent match, and there is plenty of movement between the two. However, it is still very accurate, and not really set up with a big scope to get tiny groups at long distances. It has a 3.5x scoope on it which is rock solid and more than enough, most of the time. I may have a scope laying around to mount to it to test group size before and after bedding. I have bedded many rifles, and am very aware of the potential problem of not using a release agent. It will not be overlooked. Now just to find time to do it. Btw, did it say anything about bedding the front pin lug?

I too have been eyeing the weaver tactical 3-15x50. Please let me know how yall like them. I own a SS 10x42 sf and i love it. It is mounted on my savage model 10 fcp mcmillan. However I am convinced that a variable power scope would better benafit me once i finish my ar308 build. Weaver stands out, but i have read that it only had about 57 moa of internal adjustment. That cuts it pretty close for some of the shooting i do, and would force me to get a 25-30 moa base. But i also read that the weaver has 100 moa of adjustment. If someone can clear this up i would appreciate it, as well as any other suggestions for what to get.

Possible group buy on 308 match barrels !
TomBruto replied to MikedaddyH's topic in General Discussion
I also am very interested, but would also like to know the answers to the questions previously asked. I am interested in a 20 incher. -
Hello all, I live in Marfa at the moment, and despite the vast expanses of flat clear land, i can anly find a 250 yard range. I havent had a chance to go yet, but from what the locals say, it is free, so I guess that makes up for it. Back in Uvalde where i grew up, I had a home made range with a gong at 800 and various other steel targets on the farm. The Uvalde gun range was decent, with rifle range at 50, 100, 200, and 300, as well as a wide pistol range and trap and skeet also. 60$ a year for a membership, but i dont ever remember paying after the first year. They were kinda laid back at the time, not sure if it is still that way.
-
Thanks, I am very curious to see how they do it. And I have a full length resizing die aswell, just thought I would give the other a try.
-
Thanks, that cleared alot up. And i agree that a free floated barrel is a must if you are looking for accuracy. The reciever i am going to use is a monolithic upper, so it can only bee free floated, maybe you could do something to make it not, but why would you.
-
"A question about "bedding" a rifle. The only rifles I've seen with bedding are M1A/M14's in JAE stocks. Could an AR even be bedded? I thought the whole purpose of having a freefloat was so you didn't have to bed." That is what i am trying to find out. I would think you could bed around the reciever pin lugs, but wouldnt have to with a tight fitting upper and lower. All of my bedding experience comes from various bolt actions, but as i understand it, free floating and bedding the action are two different things. Bedding is to make sure you have a tight stress free fit to the stock so there is even pressure thruout the reciever as it is bolted to the stock. Free floating a barrel is to make sure there are no external pressures on the barrel (other than gravity) so that the barrel will have consistent harmonics. Again that is for bolt actions, but i figured there may be some similaritys. And also i may not be correct in my explinations on the two. This build will be used mainly for hunting, so sub moa would be acceptable. But i would like to see ragged holes. It would make those 600+ shots a little more comforting. Where i do most of my hunting, i cover a long canyon from a hill top and it is not uncomon to see a group of hogs at 630 yds.
-
Thanks to all of you for the info. I like the idea of the expanding takedown pins, though i doubt i will need them, because everyone says that the reciever will fit well. The question about bedding is more for my curiosity, i doubt very highly that I would be ballsy enough to inlet and bed my brand new MATEN, i was just wondering if it is something that people do. Jgun, I think i will keep the chamber loos enough to where i can shoot factory ammo, though i will be shooting mostly reloads. I like to have the option. I have some lee collet dies that i use for my 308 bolt action that only resize the neck, so as long as i use brass fired from that gun, it should be pretty tight no matter what the chamber is. Or at least that is what i was led to believe, but i have had very good results from my bolt action. In your oppinion, is .3 moa ctc achievable with a good barrel chambered fairly tight, but loos enough to shoot factory ammo with the right load and assuming i do my part?
-
I read that they have very tight tolerances, and i wasnt just gonna do it without trying it first. I was just wondering if people did it to the ar platform. I have accurized many bolt actions, but never heard of anyone doing it to an ar. As for muzzle device, I was thinking of a surefire. So in the future when i suppress it, it will be gtg. Not sure if i want the one where the suppressor overlaps the barrel slightly or the one that just fits on the end. It will be determined by the diameter of the barrel i get. As for the trigger, I was thinking of a RRA NM 2 stage and probably do a little work to it to lighten it. Maybe even send it off to get a NiB coat. Is the Kreiger a good choice, well i know they make good barrels, but are there any other manufacturers that have the same quality with a smaller pricetag or delivery period?

Howdy from Texas. ArmaLite may be in my future But....

Yeah, i have the same relationship. They cause alot of damage, but they are fun to shoot. They have destroyed countless acres in our fields in uvalde county, and in Val Verde county they run all the deer off and tear up the feeders. We thined them out, last time we went to the Rock Grande ranch, got 21 in all over 5 days. That was when i got "Manbearpig" as i like to call him. We got another one that was nearly identical in size, but the skull is about an inch shorter. I need to take a scale out there so i can get weights on them.
