It's been a long time since I've been on this forum, but I'm resurrecting this thread again lol. I've had one of the DPMS Saums for about 10 years I think. It runs great, but has the normal size firing pin instead of the hp pin so with bullets heavier than 168 grains I can get pierced primers. Not a big issue for me, I just don't shoot the heavies. Actually I just finished off a box of 50 that I loaded in 2013, so I don't shoot it much at all lol. But it shoots outstanding, 168 amax with h4350 averages 2850 fps and groups 1.5" at 200 yds so I can live with that. You feel it go off but it's not punishing at all imo. It's actually a heck of a lot of fun to shoot but a bit heavy for hunting. 20" barrel, and I think they kept it short to keep the gas under control, it was probably developed before the +2 gas systems came along. I have the magazine issue figured out, I wasn't happy with the factory solution so I designed my own. Think of 5.56 mag walls inside a 308 mag body, creating a single stack 6 round mag. Works flawlessly. The biggest issue I can see is extractors, as in breaking them. I broke one 8 or 9 years ago, and DPMS initially told me "sorry Charlie" but then found one and sent it to me. Now it could be an issue if another breaks. I was wondering if the one from Kak would work, or if I should just plan on modifying a 308 extractor. I do have a G2 extractor I could try, they're supposed to be a lot tougher.

That's going to be pretty sweet, the 260 is a great round. I built one with a dpms bull 24" barrel and it's just scary how repeatable hits are way out there. Also good choice on the jp handgaurd, I used a rifle length one and I love it. Looking forward to reports on that bhw barrel. I've had a few and they usually shoot pretty well in the standard contour weights. I would like to shoot one in a bull profile and see just how good they are.

My family and I are meeting up with a buddy and his wife to shoot some pdogs and have a good time! Going to get to try out the 260 I just put together with a dpms 24" barrel. It's turning out to be a tack driver so hope to get some long range dogs!

Geez guys, we all know the 308 will kill anything but there is nothing wrong with wanting something different is there? Just find it odd to see questions like "what do you need that for..." sounds like what the gun control people ask... Ok that being said I have a 300 Saum, DPMS, and it shoots fantastic! 110 gr vmax at 3500 fps, 178's at 2800, haven't loaded anything else but probably going to try some 150's soon. It has a 20" barrel which hurts velocity a lot. I've put probably 4 to 500 rounds thru it and I can tell you the pros and cons. Pros: Way faster than my 20" 308 with any bullet, at least 2 to 300 fps faster. Hits correspondingly harder and shoots that much flatter, bucks wind better You won't likely see another one at the range I bought it so cheap at Cabela's that I couldn't pass it up ($725 complete) Cons: Mags only hold 4 rounds, and are finicky. I modded a pmag that works well but it only holds 3. More than that and the sides bulge out because the rounds are so fat that they don't stack like 308 family rounds. Parts- if the bolt ever breaks it's all over, no replacements that I know of. I broke an extractor and luckily DPMS has a few left over and sent me one. The only other option is to grind and modify a 308 extractor. Brass- I have 150 pieces and I get a lot of loadings out of it (10 or so) but I don't see any more available right now. Hopefully that changes and things will get back to normal. I've considered selling it as my 260 shoots about as flat and bucks the wind great, and burns less powder, etc, but the 300 is just so cool I can't let it go.

I absolutely love the idea of the Eliminator, almost bought one of the earlier models. But what stopped me is that I've had other Burris scopes and the optics left a lot to be desired in less than ideal light conditions. Trying to target shoot while facing a setting sun was almost impossible, while other scopes seemed to filter the glare out better. The other problem I see is what happens when the electronics crap out after 5 or 10 years and the warranty is only for 3 years (I think). Like I said, I love the idea, but it's too much money for me to gamble.

Not to turn this into a "one shot case lube" thread, but fwiw I've loaded thousands upon thousands of rounds using nothing but that for years. How I do it is stand them all up in loading trays and after shaking up the can of one shot, spray at an angle so a little bit gets in the mouth of the case. Just spray them row-by-row, and when done turn the tray 180 degrees and spray them all the same again. Do it this way and you won't have stuck cases or hard press operation. Also I loaded on a Rock Chucker for 25 years before moving to an old RCBS Ammomaster progressive I bought second hand last spring. I'm not going back, even for precision loads. For rifle loads with stick powder I simply throw a charge a few tenths under the target weight, then just before seating the bullet I pull the case from the press, dump the powder on the pan of the Chargemaster, then use it to trickle up. Pour back in the case, replace it in the press and carry on. While much slower than simply dumping powder, it's still way faster than single stage and just as accurate. I've not found any reason ammo loaded on a progressive should be any less accurate than a single stage, and yes I check bullet runout. With good dies I can't tell a difference between presses.

I totally hear what you are saying about the hunting, it is beyond ridiculous and getting worse. I am fortunate in that I have access to a good place where the owner doesn't want strangers hunting his ground for any price. If I have to start paying in order to hunt count me out. I'll shoot does (which I do most of the time anyway). That's one thing nice about hunting coyotes and p-dogs, pretty easy to get permission. As for too much gear, that's for sure we are super-spoiled. Some of it is sure nice and handy though!

Glad it worked out! DPMS has been responsive to me when I had a problem, I broke an extractor on my 300 Saum last spring and they found one and sent it out even though that rifle was discontinued years ago. I have read a lot of not so good stuff about dpms though.

I've got 2 lightly used ones I'd trade for black ones if you're interested.

JSE got some DPMS carbon fiber ff tubes in stock so one is headed my way for my 308. Also a Hogue grip.
