I sold my Suzuki SV1000S last summer; I don't miss it yet because its still 20 degrees outside, but I'm sure my throttle hand will get itchy this spring.

ROFL, especially 12, 15, 20, 22, and 29.

I'm currently finishing up college in Minneapolis; soon moving to South Dakota. I'm looking forward to the slower pace, open space, and nicer people. (Watch an episode of Corner Gas on YouTube and you'll see what I mean) :D

Never been shot!?!? They cycle smoother and faster then an 870 or a 590...I think the 1300 is the best of its class. Hang on to it forever ;D

Trigger LR-308
MrLowandSlow replied to Valleytown Shooter's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
My vote goes to the Geissele Match trigger - 2 pound 1st stage, 1 pound second stage - simply fantastic! There is a VERY in-depth article about it in a DPMS LR in the December issue of Precision Shooter Magazine. -
Forward Assist is too long
MrLowandSlow replied to MrLowandSlow's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Well, here's the report. I went to home depot, but only found 1.5" 4D nails; no 2" or 2.5". I bought a box, but figured I would try using a 5/64" 2" allen wrench instead, since it is longer. Then I braced the setup and carefully smacked it with a hammer; no dice. I smacked it a few more times adding greater intensity with each blow, and all I ended up doing was bending my allen wrench (only very, very slightly, since it was almost a perfect fit for the hole, but slightly non-the-less). I called DPMS this morning, and they said the forward assist is within tolerances, since the carrier is not scratched during cycling. So, since I didn't have any luck punching out the pin, and since the forward assist does not impede the movement of the carrier, I think I'll leave it as is. However, since the bore guide is plastic and cheap, I think I'll try to shave one side of it flat, and put the flat side toward the forward assist when cleaning. Thanks for the help, imschur and 98Z5V; I hope I can return the favors someday. :) -
Forward Assist is too long

Thanks for the help, 98Z5V! I'm off to Home Deopt; I'll update this thread once I try it tonight. It seems kind of wierd that DPMS would make this mistake during assembly - has anyone else had a problem like this (or other quality control issues)? -
It reminds me of the new Kel-Tec RFB...its cool too. :auto:

Those 1300s are SWEET! Its too bad they don't make them anymore.

I'm going to build my first one this summer, and am thinking of using a 5.11 TDU Jumpsuit as the base. Should be fun :)

Forward Assist is too long
MrLowandSlow replied to MrLowandSlow's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Oh...now I see how the roll pin fits in there; I'll set the ego aside and admit I was looking for the bottom of the roll pin hole on the inside of the receiver, instead of just noticing it went straight down through the forward assist assembly. :-[ Once I know what size punch to use, it should be pretty simple. Thanks for the help, guys...learning is half of it! -
Forward Assist is too long

Hmmm....makes sense, 98Z5V. I'm not sure how I would get the forward assist out though; it looks like its easier to install then uninstall. Also, I didn't install it myself, it came from DPMS assembled. Thanks for your help...this site totally rocks! -

Forward Assist is too long
MrLowandSlow replied to MrLowandSlow's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
It springs out fully. When I depress it, it depresses fully too. I tried to measure it (by eyeball), and it looks like it sticks out about 1/16" into the carrier recess. -
I have my new LR-6.5 with the standard A3 upper, and I just noticed the forward assist sticks down into the carrier recess even without pushing on it. I noticed this when I attempted to put a bore guide into it so I could clean it, and the very tip of the forward assist scratched the heck out of it. I haven't shot it yet (it's still new; I just got it a couple months ago), but it seems to cycle fine - there are no scratches on the carrier from the little tip of the forward assist. I assume something went wrong durng assembly. Anybody have any ideas?

And to think...some people spend 20,000 dollars on a Harley Davidson! Cool collection ;D

Prep before first outing?
MrLowandSlow replied to Madhouse's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
There are as many opinions regarding new barrel break-in as stars in the sky. Don't get caught up in any of the hype, just do what you want. When I break in a new precision gun (one I really like, want to have for a very long time, and probably cost a good bit of dough), I go out on a beautiful day and take my sweet time with it. For me, breaking in a barrel (on a gun that is deserving, ex. your LR-308 vs an 870) is just as much an experience in Zen/Harmony/Honor as it is an exercise in function (I think it does help, some don't). Whatever you do, remember to make it a good day; you will take your rifle to the range/outdoors hundreds of times, but only the first time once. -
+1 for the Super Sniper optic....not quite a Nightforce, but pretty good and half the price. You also will probably need the Magpul PRS so you can raise the comb height.....with the standard A2 Buttstock, it'd be pretty hard to get a good sight picture with that high rail on the slickside upper.

When I finally got my LR-6.5 Barrel Assembly and clamped it to my LR-308 lower, I was also suprised at how big and heavy they are! They're fantastic for getting proned out and doing some long range shooting....not so good for humping for miles or running up many flights of stairs. ;)

Well, I guess I'll start this thread off by suggesting a good magazine....Precision Shooter. It offers in-depth reviews and analysis of rifles, ballistics, reloading, competitions, etc. The articles are well written, full of advanced information, and I've learned alot from it. Also, it isn't littered with advertisements, nor does it dumb itself down to newb level (like most of what you see at the bookstore). I recommend it. And no, I'm not affiliated with them in any way.

DPMS LR-308 Trigger Options
MrLowandSlow replied to draco41's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
I HIGHLY recommend the Geissele Two-Stage Match trigger; it is simply the best trigger I've ever used on a field gun (not counting benchrest-only guns, some of those are insane!). I have an LR-308 chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor, and the Geissele functions perfectly in it. The spring tension is high enough to ensure successful primer strikes on the 308/6.5 cartridges, and the pull is adjustable for weight and overtravel. I have mine set at 3 pounds for the 1st stage, and just under 1 pound for the second stage....it just rocks. -
Building versus Buying a DPMS LR-308
MrLowandSlow replied to imschur's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
I agree 100% with imschur regarding the pros and cons of building the rifle yourself; he's obviously done this before! For me, the pros have vastly outweighed the cons. When I started this project, I was under no specific timetable, so I was free to do it slow and order each component only after analyzing all the options (I don't know how many triggers I looked at before I decided to get the Geissele!). Also, the sense of pride of ownership you get by building the rifle yourself makes it something very special and unique; I like my Glocks, but I love my rifle. Finally, you WILL spend more money doing it yourself, but remember, guns can last a lifetime; the extra money may matter now, but it won't sting forever. -
Whats your favorite style or type of semi auto pistol?
MrLowandSlow replied to imschur's topic in Handguns
I think it depends on what its purpose will be....duty, concealed carry, competition, etc. I think the Glock family is hard to beat. From the subcompact 26 to the competition oriented 34 to the devastating-for-duty-use 21, there is a Glock for everyone. They're reliable, accurate, and affordable. I will give MAJOR credit to a 1911 though, for they are the most beautiful design I've ever seen. -
I just discovered this forum, along with 308ar.com, and had to become a member. I have been building a DPMS LR-308 (chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor) from a stripped lower for about a year....it's amazing how much you learn about the system when you put it together with your own hands! Aside from the optic, which I haven't decided on yet, the gun is about 85% built; I'm still waiting on a couple odds and ends like a bipod, vertical grip, sling, etc. I look forward to learning from you all, and hopefully I will be able to help out with info I've learned over the years.
